The man in the rumpled suit mumbled a non-committal response, gesturing to the empty space next to him on the bench. Cindy sat down.
She couldn't help but notice how pathetic he looked. Of course, she knew that he almost definitely deserved it. He was mean and petty and self-absorbed, not to mention obscenely rich. But seeing him so sad and downtrodden made her heart twinge with a weird sort of pity.
"Aw, hey, man, don't look so sad," she said, instinctively giving him a gentle pat on the back. "You'll be alright. You've still got most of your millions, haven't you?"
He gave her a scowl, his signature facial expression. "Do you mind? Go away, leave me alone, et cetera." He looked away from her, his heart obviously not in it.
"Oh, you poor guy," she crooned, a little bit of good-natured mocking in her voice. She gasped dramatically. "Does the poor little millionaire need a hug?"
He sneered at her again, visibly offended by the offer. "Don't touch me." Cindy stifled a chuckle at his reaction. It's like he's allergic to any kind of positive interaction.
"Hey, let's go for a walk," she said suddenly, almost jumping up from the bench. "We can go to that new ice cream place. Maybe the manager will feel bad enough for you that she'll give you a job." She nudged his shoulder.
"Absolutely not." He gave her an irritated look again. "I have more self respect than that."
"Sure, pal," she teased. "Anyway, let's get going. If we get there quick enough, we won't have to wait in line."
He stood up and dusted himself off a bit. "I'm assuming you're paying?"
"Oh, yeah," she said, rolling her eyes. "I'd hate for the super mega-rich guy to have to spend any money on two whole ice cream cones. You'll be in financial disarray."
