𝐢𝐭   𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭   𝐛𝐞   𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲            getting   to   the   root   of   jim’s   problem ,     he   could   nag   and   nag   and   still   be   wading   through   misdirection   after   annoying   misdirection   until   the   sun   comes   up        (  he   hadn’t   even   seen   his   own   sun   in   months ,    years ?  ) .        it’s   that   same   attitude   that   pulls   at   leonard’s   sanity ,      tugging   lips   into   a   frown   time   and   time   again .                                ❝  you   know   i   don’t   prescribe   painkillers   to   pain   in   the   ass   captains .      i   like   to   watch   ‘em   suffer . ❞                  thumb   presses   against   the   trigger   of   the   applicator ,      throwing   the   device   into   action   to   spray   the   angered   wound .                     ❝  but   since   you’re   lookin’   so   pathetic  .   .   . ❞                  applicator   is    discarded   beside   the   patient ,     and   leonard   takes   a   moment   to   watch   him ,      that   same   frown   to   his   lips   as   eyes   survey   the   wounded   yet   still   irritatingly   cocky   captain .                     ❝  and   you   better   make   sure   that’s   all   she   ever   calls   you .      i   don’t   need   to   hear   another   nurse   callin’   you   no   good ,      they   trust   you   as   a   damn   good   captain   but   not   worth   touchin’   with   a   pole   otherwise . ❞                   and   he   was   caught   in   the   middle   of   it   all ;     friend   of   the   captain  .   .   .       cmo ,      he’d   get   an   earful .       arms   cross   over   his   chest   when   shoulders   drop ,                              ❝ you   know   i   don’t ,    and   it’s   usually   because   you’ve   lead   us   into   somethin’   deadly   that   brings   an   eternal   damn   stream   of   patients   through   my   doors .     so   no   jim ,     i   barely   get   four   hours ,      but   that’s   not   the   point . ❞                  voice   softens   then ,      and   the   doctor   leans   against   the   nearest   surface ;      he’s   exhausted ,     but   tired   of   jim’s   inability   to   get   to   a   point   he   doesn’t   want   to   reveal .                   ❝ i’m   not   just   your   doctor ,   jim ,   if   there’s   somethin’   wrong   you’ve   gotta   tell   me . ❞   

      THE CAPTAIN SO EASILY shifts that statement he thinks, twisting Spock’s words to his benefit just as naturally as breathing.  It is illogical, confusing occasionally, often or always unpredictable where once, Spock had mistaken this for arrogance.  Now, brandishing a flexed move of his brow, he finds that he expects nothing else, nothing less, his own lips twitching briefly — like a trick of the light — and traitorously, in that unexpected expectation. He could say something then, make a comment that on this planet, there are no such thing as horses, and certainly no gifts. “ As you say, ”  he counters instead, as if the smile Kirk fashions to that mouth wasn’t a cut of brightness, a cast of warmth in all this dark.  It burns something loose around them.  James Kirk has tendency to this, too, contrasting the cold precision of Spock’s hands.  But catching his nail on the amplifier to pull it free, he discards it; he has no name for whatever it might have been. The tiny thing glints when Spock brings it upward, and to his satisfaction, it appears intact.  He extends to drop it in Kirk’s palm,  “ Your hand, Captain? ”

james holds out a hand and watches the tiny thing drop against his palm.   while his hands are tanned,   his knuckles a sort of rosy pink,    spock’s hands are tinged with green.   his knuckles are darker,   his palms lighter.    jim has made a study of him before   :       it is interesting to look at him.     interesting might not be the right word.     jim had met many aliens before,   sure,   but spock had always been...      different.    perhaps he merely knows spock better than most.   after all,   the bridge made family of them all.

* .  ♡ she was focused on moving the dry ingredients to one side. this was her element. this what she trained for - went to school for. she was glad that even stuck here in the future, ellie was still able to do what she loved. cook for people, make the most ridiculous and amazing desserts. she mumbles her thanks as he hands her the eggs - cracking them into another bowl. “ well - it’s more chocolate i’ve melted into the caramel - then shaped and placed into the freezer to set. ” ellie replied finally looking up from the bench, giving the captain a grin. “ i wasn’t about to replicate it that’s for sure. ” nodding her head to the slightly bigger than normal chocolate chips in another bowl. “ keeps me busy and out of the way. ” a soft laugh then.

“ i don’t believe you.  you’re his friend.  that’s gotta mean something. ”  she’d been convinced that the old man was incapable of friendship until she’d found out that she & mccoy share the same soft spot for a particular blond cadet. “ i don’t think he likes anyone else here half as much as he likes you.  just turn on those – puppy eyes – of yours and ask nicely.  please,  jim.  for me? ”

❝  none at all.  ❞     it wouldn’t be a new day without a spat of trouble,   anyway.    sersi already,   instinctively,   is working to find a silver lining or two.   a thankless job,   but it must be done,   she always reasons with herself   –   the galaxy would drown in its own misery if she weren’t there to prop an umbrella over it      (     she is the patron saint of thanklessness,  but has never thought to mind it much…   she was born for duty,   after all.   even if she is liberal with her definition of it,   her helping hand reaches far     ).      ❝  i’d welcome the company,  really.  i’m afraid my day hasn’t been half as eventful as yours.  ❞      there,   a silver lining reveals itself to her:    companionship,   the unshakeable sound of someone else’s voice clear as day.   the eternals have scattered,   sculpting lives of their own in their blistered hands.    a keener sersi would envy that sort of independence…    here,   she only sits sorely in the rubble of their goodbyes and waits to hear hellos again.      ❝  this way,  ❞     she beckons,   a nod of her head twitching toward the swamp.    the domo is parked discreetly beneath a litter of treetops,   a damp but brief enough walk through the greenery away.    she clasps her hands at her waist neatly,   mouth moved into a smile.

“    careful, sir.    butter me up anymore, and i’m gonna start thinking you are angling for something.    ”     there is a certain grace to her movements; ballet-shoes might have been retired almost a decade ago, but the grace which once allowed her to leap across the stage, as a swan takes its first dive, finds echoes in her everyday movements;    there was a music, and fantasy to enterprise, the symphony coming from the warp-core might pale in comparison to debussy, but it burned and guided them to their places all the same.

                      ABOVE HIM, KIRK IS SMILING, almost lazy it seems, inviting Spock to join in his confidence, when in fact they are the only people in this strange and unfriendly landscape. He levels his brows in thought. Spock, at times, has the discomfiting feeling that Kirk sees too much that Spock has not intended to express  (   — knows too much —   )  is coming to know Spock too well. He reminds himself that it is natural for those in a command team to become well-acquainted. But now, Spock cannot help but be aware of the space between them. “ I believe you are in favor of democracy when the outcome favors you, ”   it’s a play, eyes shining, and he should be unfamiliar with such amusing familiarity even as he says these things, aiming inexplicably to pull that grin further and as   far away   from this place if he can. Kirk’s concern does not escape him despite the Captain’s efforts to the contrary. Redirecting, he watches Kirk tear at the parts of his communicator, reaching for it, careful to avoid skin to skin before Spock sets himself to work,   “ A measure of both is needed on occasion, ”   he inspects the inside, searching for the device’s tiny amplifier. He does not ruminate on the analogical nature of that statement to the two of them,   “ However, in our present circumstances, we may require much of that   brute force   if we are to return to the Enterprise on our own. ”

spock shoots back a joke    (    at least,  as close as he’s ever heard the vulcan get,   and it is all the more pleasant to know that he gets to see this side of the other   :       he is reminded of the first time they met,   where spock’s shoulders seemed impossibly stiff,    his manner forfeiting even a clinical closeness     ...      they have found a way around each other,  though,   and he likes to think they have settled into a mutual intimacy     ).     his arms cross over his chest as he lets a smile shine down on the other    —     despite the displeasure that comes with their situation,   at least he has good company.   perhaps there will discover something of interest on this planet,   too.    if they were really lucky.   it might not even try to kill them.   

* .  ♡ she’s easily amused but that wasn’t a bad thing. ellie had resided to the fact that she wasn’t going to get home any time soon - she might as well let herself go and enjoy where life would take her in that moment. so moving around the kitchen, ellie got everything she needed to make the muffins - setting out two bowls (one for the wet ingredients and one for the dry) in front of the captain, and the three different kinds of chocolate chips. “ i don’t think they’re so bad. ” there’s a smirk. “ great, can you grab the eggs ? ” she points to the fridge over jim’s shoulder. “ just need two. ”

“ your best friend is a dick, ”  harleen grumbles,  practically collapsing into the seat next to @sc937​ as she slams her tray down on the table.  starfleet’s dining hall is bustling at this hour,  which means there are precious few empty tables and that jim is now stuck with harley’s company.  she offers him a fry from her tray as compensation. “ you know he tried to assign me an overnight shift at the clinic during hell week?  hell week!  i told him just because he has a decade of experience on me doesn’t mean he gets to make the rules. ”

silently,  awfully,  she is thankful for complications.  linearity wounds her,  the mockery of time’s passing and a child’s belief in cause and effect.  complications are fate’s way of dealing her a different hand.  an unfavorable hand for the abandoned captain,  but the certainty of misfortune had to land somewhere.  a sympathetic wince crosses her mouth.   ❝  i’m just sorry we couldn’t be of more help.  ❞   by default,  she apologizes;  by default,  she speaks on the behalf of the masses.  leadership suits sersi well enough.  she stands by dutifully,  even with nothing to do   (     would ajak have found something to do?  would ikaris?  phastos is locked behind a lab door,  pledging himself to furthered knowledge,  but she tries to imagine how he’d pick apart the scene now,  notches and cords tugged together to make sense out of a mess…  that kind of patience has always eluded sersi,  and she watches the captain burrow beneath the escape pod’s seat with an unhelpful eye     ).   ❝  captain,  if you’d be more comfortable,  our ship isn’t a far walk   –   i can take you there to wait for your crew,  no problem.  ❞

* .  ♡ a loud laugh then, hand quickly falling over her mouth as she muffled the sound. red blushes across her cheeks - okay she didn’t exactly want to make a fool of herself in front of the captain. “ thank you. ” she pulled her hand away and grinned. “ i certainly try my best. ” for what it was worth - ellie was grateful that she could still do what she loved, even if she was so far from home. “ always have to go chocolate. ” her grinned remained before she started to rummage across the kitchen. ellie tried her best to use all organic foods, nothing from a replicator and certainly nothing packaged. “ double or triple choc ? ”
