Garden Visitor Did you know that more than 40 percent of insects are near extinction? Butterflies are having a terrible time. 2018 was an especially catastrophic year for them in Northern California. With a yard full of native flowering plants, I usually have many butterfly visitors. This year there are very few. Does someone know the name of this beauty? A checkerspot of some kind? Today’s step-outside-my-comfort-zone moment: I’m waiting in a long line at Joann’s Fabrics, and kvetching with the woman in front of me. I remember that I have a bunch of postcards in my purse that I’m supposed to get signed for our Mothers Out Front campaign. It occurs to me that this line is the perfect opportunity. I hesitate. But then I remember the panic I felt a few minutes ago listening to yet another frightening climate crisis statistic. In spite of my discomfort, introvert that I am, I ask, “Have any of you heard about the Green New Deal? We’re delivering postcards to Senator Feinstein to urge her to sign on to the Green New Deal.” Boom - five people reach out for postcards, sharing pens. Wow.
