Crashing Down

Jessica ran her hands through her hair, “You don’t have to bring anything. You guys can bring beer and stuff if you guys want.” She looked out the window, “Yeah, you can. Whatever you want. Sorry I didn’t ask if you were craving anything, I’m just…” They drove and Beth talked about food she wanted, Jessica tried to take it all in but she was just watching the blocks go by until they got to the daycare. Unbuckling quickly, she pulled herself out of the car and inside. Walking through the gate she hugged onto her two boys who were playing with some toy cars on the floor. They didn’t understand what was going on, Jessica just kept repeating to them, “We’re gonna have dinner with Beth and Bryce and you can have all the ice cream you want.” They made it back to the Scott house and got the kids out of the car, “Are you sure you don’t wanna stay until he gets off work? So you’re not alone? Today’s been rough.”

Beth smiled as she watched Jess reunite with her boys. She couldn’t wait to have a family of her own, to have it physically ache to be away from her daughter in the tough times. She had it lucky now though, her little girl was safe inside her. Safe and throwing a fit apparently. She had a hand on her stomach,trying to rub away the pain, trying to sooth the little one inside her. “No, I’m fine, really. I think I need to lay down for a while before coming over actually, I think I burnt myself out a bit today.” She smiled and reassured her best friend, kissing the boys before they ran inside to go play. “I’ll call Bryce on the way home, let him know about tonight. If you two want any alcohol, just text him. I’m not going to buy beer with my belly and looking like a horrible mom.” She joked and gave Jess a hug before heading home and curling up in bed. Beth called Bryce to fill him in and mentioned really not feeling well, but she wasn’t just going to call off going over to Jess’ tonight. She ended up calling him again at some point, she knew he would be heading home about this time, but the pain was only getting worse and each second felt like an eternity. “I don’t know what’s wrong. Something’s wrong.” She cried on the phone with him as he raced home to find her crouched in the kitchen, glass of water spilled across the floor from the spike of pain that sent her to her knees.

If there’s any writing tactic I hate, it’s “These characters barely knew each other last season, but over the hiatus they suddenly became close, and now they’re probably soulmates. But it’s okay because ~months have passed off camera!”. 

And also “We went through a horrible traumatic experience but the writers are too lazy to show us grieving, so let’s skip forward a few months and pretend we’ve emotionally recovered offscreen.”

Crashing Down

Jessica got in the ambulance and cried all the way there. She couldn’t imagine anything awful happening to her kids. Her job was the save people and getting there when it was too late and there was so many dead bodies was hard. Walking into hospital she started to compose herself not wanting  kids to worry. Walking into an on-call room, she got some scrubs and put her clothes in a hazard bag before walking into the daycare. Looking through the window she saw kids playing and laughing and she started to feel better. Walking down the hall, she stopped by the nursery and leaned against the nurses station. Seeing new life got her hands to stop shaking. Jumping when she heard Beth’s voice, she turned to her and nodded. “I’m fine, I just…I feel pretty calm now. Just don’t understand how bad things can happen.” She hugged onto her friend and they walked back to her car, “Do, uhm.. You and.. Bryce want to come over for dinner?” She asked starting to wring her hands together again. 

Beth nodded and they hopped in her car. “Sure, when Bryce gets off work I’ll bring him by. What do you want me to bring over?” She tried to keep the conversation light because she knew Jessica was having an extra hard time seeing as though this has to be the first day she left the boys in daycare. “I can make Bryce make macaroni and cheese before we come over. I know the boys love it.” She smiled as they drove.
