(maia reficco / cis woman / she/her / saxifrage ) did you just see EMILIA MEDINA walking through the halls? they’re a TWENTY TWO year-old THIRD YEAR SOCIOLOGY student from BATESVILLE, INDIANA. rumour has it they’ve been a member of praeditus since they were in their SECOND YEAR. i’ve heard they have a tendency to be AVOIDANT & PARANOID, but RESOURCEFUL & DETERMINED, too. well, anyway, you’ll know if you spot EM again because they always seem to remind me of WORN TEXTBOOK PAGES, DEEP BREATHS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, THE PRICK OF A SEWING NEEDLE, & METICULOUSLY-KEPT RECORDS. just like the rest of us, they have something to hide.

history
emilia was born in a small, rural town in indiana as the youngest of five. she grew up in an income restricted housing complex until her parents could no longer keep up with the rent, at which point she and her family became unhoused for about a year and a half.
as a child, she loved her life. before they lost the apartment, it was quiet and simple, and she didn’t mind that her family wasn’t wealthy as long as they had each other.
while most of the family drew closer to each other to cope with the circumstances they found themselves in, emilia’s oldest brother, francis, did the opposite. he distanced himself, started hanging around a local gang, and eventually dropped out of high school to live and work with the gang full time.
francis died in an gang-related accidental shooting and emilia’s facade shattered. her life no longer seemed beautiful, like it had before. now, emilia can see it for what it always was: excruciatingly and inexplicably unfair. why should she and her siblings have to grow up so fast, while others didn’t? why doesn’t her brother get to grow up at all? she comes to despise the childhood she’s always loved.
in an effort to smother her grief, she throws herself into her studies, determined to one day live a completely different life. she needed to be the very best, at the very top of the ladder. meraviglia seemed like the only option for a goal this lofty.
she worked her ass off in school, got a part time job as soon as she was old enough, and picked up as many extracurriculars as she could afford. her days were rigorously structured and she never had any free time, but her hard work payed off when she received a full ride to meraviglia to study sociology.
the lies begin. long before she had ever set foot in europe, emilia had decided to conceal her past. she spent the plane ride overseas, as well as every bus, train, and taxi ride in between, creating her cover story, which now lives in an encrypted file on her laptop. she references it from time to time, and will add details when necessary so she doesn’t contradict herself or forget anything. for the most part, it’s committed to memory, and she doesn’t need to look at it as much as she did in her first year.
she was tapped to join praeditus in her second year. this was the final step in her plan - the connections she’d need to really excel in life could be cemented through the club. everything she wanted was within reach and things were falling right into place, just like she’d been planning for for ages. the only issue, though: the price of entry is a secret, and a secret is not something emilia is willing to provide.
she makes up some bullshit lie about sleeping with her brother’s girlfriend - high stakes enough to be believable but easily debunked if needed, as her brother wasn’t dating anyone at the time she claims it took place. she’s terrified of dupont finding out that she lied to get in, as it would likely mean she’d be booted from the club.
while she has never been particularly close with professor dupont, his disappearance troubles her greatly. she selfishly fears the club may be shut down, which would put a considerable dent in her plans for the future.
personality
outwardly, em is a bit of a chameleon. she’ll do whatever it takes to fit in, and oftentimes that includes changing her personality depending on the people she’s with and the environment she’s in. with the praeditus members, she tries to keep things pretty consistent, since they see her both individually and in a group setting, but does make minor adjustments depending on who’s around.
em is a bit reserved, but typically friendly when approached. connections are everything to her, as you never know who you may need to call on down the road. plus, she absolutely loathes being on anyone’s bad side, so she tries to at least be pleasant towards everyone she meets, even if she doesn’t actually like them very much. there are, of course, some exceptions to this rule 👀
she’s incredibly hardworking and very dedicated, but the stress from every aspect of her life weighs heavily on her. however, she hides it well. her brain will often be going a million miles a minute, but she masks it with a carefully crafted smile.
on a deeper level, emilia carries a lot of shame surrounding her lies. her parents are so proud to call her their daughter; they share all her accomplishments with everyone in their community and are constantly looking for excuses to bring her up in conversation. emilia, on the other hand, couldn’t be more embarrassed about where she comes from and who her family is. it’s gut wrenching to know how devastated her family would be if they found out she was embarrassed by them, but she just can’t help herself when it comes to hiding them. her desire to be included and be seen as an equal by the others in praeditus outweighs her desire to please her family.
