                       It's  odd,  watching  this  little  alien  do  things  he'll  never  understand.  He's  lived  through  a  lot,  done  a  lot.  He  gets  numbers  and  angles  and  things,  knows  metric  units,  but  he  couldn't  tell  you  anything  about  how  metric  follows  base  ten  and  imperial  does  not.  He  could  not  tell  you  why  Americans  follow  imperial  instead  of  metric.  He  just  knows  that's  how  it  is.

                        Like  Rocky.  That's  just  how  he  is.  He  won't  pretend  to  understand  much  of  him,  he  won't  pretend  to  understand  how  he  works  or  where  he's  from  or  what's  going  on  at  all  ever  with  them,  why  they're  tapping  as  much  as  he  is.

                       "  Grace  ??  I  look  nothing  like  him.  "  Not  that  Rocky  could  see,  but  Noah  doesn't  know  that.  What  the  alien  doesn't  understand  is  outwardly  they  have  their  differences.  Noah's  hair  is  a  little  longer,  he's  covered  in  tattoos,  perhaps  a  little  musclier  if  you  look  under  the  hood  a  bit,  but  to  Rocky  they  seem  almost  the  same.  Science  is  weird  and  he  doesn't  like  it.

𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐲  𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬  𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭  𝐧𝐨𝐚𝐡  𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐬  𝐨𝐟𝐟  𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐣𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭.  it  doesn't  make  sense  …  who  is  this  stranger⁇  where  was  his  friend⁇  the  only  moment  comes  from  the  soft  tap-tap-tapping  of  his  claw-tips  as  they  touch  together,  a  tiny  anxious  habit  that  he  never  quite  manages  to  hide. 

the  ink  on  the  human's  arms  mean  nothing  to  him.  they're  not  like  the  raised  markings  and  carved  indentations  on  rocky's  own  carapace.  these  are  flat.  silent.  no  sound,  no  depth,  nothing  to  change  the  outline  of  him.  the  more  noah  reveals,  the  more  confused  rocky  becomes.  the  vents  along  his  carapace  flare  and  click  …  if  he  had  a  face,  he'd  be  frowning.  instead  he  lowers  himself  closer  to  the  floor,  body  trembling  in  a  small,  frustrated  way.

«  ɴᴏ  ᴜɴᴅᴇʀsᴛᴀɴᴅ  …  »  to  any  creature  with  eyes,  the  tattoos  would  be  obvious  —  the  colour,  the  shape,  the  contrast  against  skin  —  but  to  the  eridian  they  are  nothing.  microscopic  pigment  trapped  under  dermis,  perfectly  flat  …  even  with  his  enhanced  hearing  there  was  no  texture  to  pick  up,  no  shift  in  silhouette.  they  may  as  well  have  been  scribbled  on  in  pen.  he  taps  his  claws  together  again,  a  soft  and  nervous  rhythm. 

«  ʀᴏᴄᴋʏ  ᴄᴀɴɴᴏᴛ  sᴇᴇ  ᴅɪғғᴇʀᴇɴᴄᴇ.  ʀᴏᴄᴋʏ  ʜᴇᴀʀ  sʜᴀᴘᴇ.  ʏᴏᴜ  ᴀɴᴅ  ɢʀᴀᴄᴇ  …  sᴀᴍᴇ.  sᴀᴍᴇ  sʜᴀᴘᴇ.  sᴀᴍᴇ  sᴏᴜɴᴅ.  »  a  pause,  a  faint  whistle,  almost  embarrassed. 

«  ...  ᴍᴀʏʙᴇ,  ɪғ  ʀᴏᴄᴋʏ  ʜᴀᴠᴇ  ᴅᴇᴠɪᴄᴇ?  ᴛʜᴇ  ᴏɴᴇ  ғᴏʀ  sᴄʀᴇᴇɴs.  ᴅᴇᴠɪᴄᴇ  ᴍᴀᴋᴇ  ʟɪɢʜᴛ  ɪɴᴛᴏ  sᴏᴜɴᴅ.  ᴍᴀᴋᴇ  ᴘɪᴄᴛᴜʀᴇ  ɪɴᴛᴏ  sʜᴀᴘᴇ.  ʙᴜᴛ…  ‘ᴛᴀᴛᴛᴏᴏs’  ᴛᴏᴏ  ғʟᴀᴛ.  ᴛᴏᴏ  ǫᴜɪᴇᴛ.  »

He doesn't expect Rocky to eat in front of him. Sort of an unspoken agreement- eating was an activity best done on one's own. After the first time they saw each other doing it, both of them were fine without repetition.

...It is fascinating, though, isn't it? He hadn't gotten the chance to take notes, but he's not sure Rocky would have let him anyway. He's... so curious if the mushy, silvery lump he'd spat out was his stomach for external digestion, or if it was something like excretion. Either way, probably not safe to touch. Or sanitary.

He trots over to the mini-airlock with his bag of popcorn and chucks about a dozen kernels inside, as well as a few unpopped. Just for fun. when it seals and the temperature and pressure equalize, they snap open, while the already popped kernels burn into hunks of carbon.

"You can take the vegetable off earth, but you can't take the earth out of the vegetable."

Stupid. He shakes his head and hopes Rocky never gets the chance to talk to another human for context on how weird he is.

𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧  𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬  𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧  𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞  𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦,  offering  a  gentle,  thoughtful  trill.  his  carapace  lifts  just  a  little  …  the  closest  his  species  gets  to  raising  an  eyebrow.

«  ᴍꜱᴛ‑ᴛʜʀᴇᴇ‑ᴋᴀʏ…?  ʏᴇꜱ.  ɢᴏᴏᴅ.  »  he  says  it  quietly,  almost  contemplative,  as  if  already  imagining  the  silhouettes  and  the  strange  human  humour  he's  trying  to  decode.  the  title  tells  him  nothing.  still,  grace  chose  it.  that  is  enough  of  a  reason  to  watch.  rocky  moves  to  dock  the  xenonite  ball  against  his  habitat,  freeing  his  limbs  so  he  can  reach  the  popcorn.  his  attention  shifts  towards  the  kernels  now  sitting  in  his  atmosphere,  and  something  in  the  eridian's  posture  softens.  a  small,  polite  chirp  follows  —  as  if  saying  I  need  a  moment,  please. 

«  ɢʀᴀᴄᴇ…  ᴘʀᴇᴘᴀʀᴇ  ꜰɪʟᴍ.  ʀᴏᴄᴋʏ  ᴡɪʟʟ  ɢᴇᴛ  sᴄʀᴇᴇɴ‑ʜᴇᴀʀɪɴɢ  ᴅᴇᴠɪᴄᴇ  ᴀɴᴅ  ᴛʀʏ  ᴘᴏᴘ‑ᴄᴏʀɴ.  »  he  gestures  towards  the  projector  with  one  limb,  a  dismissive  little  flick  that  clearly  means  go  on,  don't  look  over  here.  gathering  the  small  handful  of  burnt  and  popped  kernels,  rocky  skitters  away  towards  his  workshop  to  retrieve  the  device.  once  there,  he  turns  his  back  in  the  most  exaggerated  privacy  posture  he  has:  limbs  drawn  in,  carapace  angled,  shoulders  hunched  like  a  child  hiding  a  secret  snack.  he  tries  one  of  the  carbonised  kernels  first,  then  the  freshly  popped  ones,  holding  them  delicately  between  two  claws,  turning  them  over  like  a  jeweller  inspecting  a  gemstone.  he  taps  it  once.  and  then  (  quick  &&  furtive  )  slips  it  under  his  carapace. 

there  is  a  sound.  a  sound  grace  will  never  hear,  because  rocky  would  sooner  eject  himself  out  of  the  airlock  than  let  the  human  witness  him  eat  …  again.  but  if  grace  could  hear  it,  it  would  be  something  like:

then  rocky  straightens,  shakes  himself  off,  and  returns  to  his  usual  proud,  confident  posture  as  if  nothing  happened  at  all.  screen‑hearing  device  in  one  hand,  he  scampers  back  over  to  grace  with  a  decisive  little  warble.

«  ɢʀᴀᴄᴇ.  ꜰɪʟᴍ  ʀᴇᴀᴅʏ?  ʀᴏᴄᴋʏ  ɪs  ʀᴇᴀᴅʏ.  »

𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭  𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬  𝐨𝐮𝐭  𝐚  𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥,  𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥  𝐡𝐮𝐦  —  that  instinctive  sort  of  sound  that  arises  when  he's  processing  something  on  two  levels  at  once.  it  carries  both  a  quiet  “yeah,  I've  been  there  too”  and  a  flicker  of  stunned  disbelief  that  he's  even  having  this  conversation  in  the  first  place  …  with  tony  stark.  tony  stark,  who  is  practically  a  global  constant  at  this  point,  a  household  name,  a  man  whose  face  is  probably  more  recogniseable  than  most  world  leaders.

meanwhile  ryland  is  …  well,  just  ryland.  an  ex-academic,  a  school  teacher  who  still  feels  faintly  rediculous  being  recognised  outside  the  classroom.  sure,  the  whole  astrophage  situation  shoved  him  into  the  scientific  spotlight,  but  he  hadn't  been  even  remotely  prepared  for  that  …  not  the  attention,  not  the  sudden  expectation  that  he  had  something  important  to  say. 

he  shifts  his  weight  slightly,  offering  a  slightly  awkward  chuckle  as  a  hand  comes  up  to  scratch  at  the  back  of  his  neck.

                       Holly's  smart.  Not  Doctor  Ryland  Grace  smart,  that's  for  damn  sure,  but  mostly  everything  he  throws  at  her,  she  understands,  for  the  most  part.  However,  she  wasn't  built  for  science.  His  head  is  filled  with  numbers  and  calculations  and  the  periodic  table,  hers  is  filled  with  music  notes  and  the  regulars  orders  she's  had  to  remember.  It's  a  wonder  she  even  remembered  neutrinos,  the  ghost  particle,  and  how  there's  three  different  types.  Electron,  muon,  and  tau.  The  face  he  made  was  worth  remembering  that  much,  she'll  admit.

𝐎𝐇  …  𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞.  𝐚  𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥  𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.  a  normal  thing  that  people  do  together  all  the  time.  a  completely  standard,  socially  acceptable  thing.  and  somehow  he  made  that  weird.  a  tiny,  mortified  laugh  escapes  him  before  he  can  stop  it  -  a  small  huff  of  air  swallowed  up  by  a  shy  smile.  ryland  pushes  his  glasses  up  ―  again,  for  no  reason  at  all  …  but  it's  a  comforting  gesture  ―  and  tries  to  look  composed.  he  does  not  succeed.  but  he's  trying,  and  that  has  to  count  for  something,  right? 

❝  yes.  coffee.  that's  …  normal.  that's  good.❞  he  clears  his  throat  slightly,  determined  not  to  spiral  into  another  lecture  about  things  that  aren't  relevant  at  all.  ❝  well,  without  caffeine  my  brain  is  basically  just  decorative❞  grace  admits  with  a  sheepish  shrug  of  his  shoulders.  ❝  so  it  probably  ɪs  logical  …❞

he  winces  internally.  stop  saying  ‘logical’,  ryland,  for  the  love  of―  pushing  through  it  with  a  slight  shake  of  his  head,  he  continues  …  softer,  and  slightly  more  sure  of  himself  than  he  was  a  moment  ago.
