Rolling Stone: In some ways Gorillaz are a bigger band in America than Blur. Damon Albarn: Oh much bigger, yeah. It would be nice to play “Clint Eastwood” and “Feel Good Inc.” with Blur, but I can’t. They won’t play them with me! [Laughs] But I’ve just finished a solo record – when I go tour that, I’ll play play stuff from all my different bands.

Of the various catalysts which spark off Damon’s sense of protectiveness over Graham, the girlfriends issue is the most powerful. “He never likes my girlfriends,” sulks Graham. “That’s not true, Graham. I do but I just want to make sure he’s OK. So I treat anyone he gets emotionally involved with in that way. Just like I do with my sister.”

The thing is with Alex….the reason why I would ever have had problems with him is that he is someone I know who is totally honest and will say exactly what he thinks. When my cup was overflowing with a lot of anger and control freakishness and low self worth I would take a lot of what he said personally when I needn’t have done. It’s his truthfulness and his genuineness, whether I agree with what he’s saying or not, that makes me have a lot of respect for him. So yeah, he is a pompous knobhead, but in a good way. Also, his pompous knobheadedness, if I wasn’t being so up my own arse when I was getting angry with him about doing that, is quite hilarious.
