Sean is so fucked.
The color drains from his face when he hears that you would be paired up with him. The fast beating of his heart, the only sound his brain is clocking. He curses the teacher in his mind – knowing full well of Sean's feelings for you.
Who didn’t at this point? Sean has been obvious with his puppy crush the moment you walked into art class. Lyla took every chance to tease him about it, always pushing him to at least talk to you. It only discouraged him. Nerves building up in his system every time Lyla would get too close to you. He’s been procrastinating the objective of talking to you because of everyone’s pressure.
“Sean, right?” Your voice cuts him out of his thoughts. His eyes go to your form before darting back to the wooden table.
“-Yeah,” He confirms. His voice cracked causing him to silently hope that it didn’t sound too bad. The screeching noise of a chair being pulled beside him got him to look at you again. He wasn’t expecting for you to actually work with him–he assumed you would go to your friend group and spend the rest of class with them.
His body temperature raises, muscle burning up as his brain is hyperaware of your presence next to him. The sweat on his back makes him even more self-conscious–hoping that you couldn’t smell it. He didn’t want to seem like a pig at the first interaction he gets with you.
“I can’t work outside of school–sorry if that’s an inconvenience,” You inform him–your chair facing him directly as he takes in your features. Sean has never seen you this close. He only catches glimpses of you in the hallways or at the opposite side of the classroom.
“No, that’s fine. My schedule is pretty packed this week.” Sean’s quick to reassure you. If anything, working during class hours only made him even more giddy about the situation. The scene could have come straight out of a rom-com movie. You give him a polite smile glancing down to the concrete floor before meeting his soft gaze once more.
“I had a few ideas that we could do,” You blurted out, going on a ramble of the ideas the two of you could possibly do. Coming to a stop you stare at him blankly waiting to see Sean’s response.
Sean nods—licking his lips to get his thoughts together. “Yeah, those are great.”
“I liked the one with the chest being clawed out most.” He adds in his opinion. Truthfully he liked all of your ideas. He couldn’t decide which one is better than the other, yet he resonated more with that specific idea.
You smile at him—a genuine smile this time. Not out of politeness or an awkward smile. He could feel his heart beat increasing with every minute. His pupils dilated at the sight of your sweet smile.
He needs to stop getting distracted. He couldn’t be more obvious at this point. Soft-brown eyes dart around the classroom before landing on his sketchbook. It’s the distraction he needs to keep his mind from thinking of just you.
His hands work on the pages of his sketchbook. Drawing out a simple design of what he imagined you wanted. He listens to your pointers adding the additional details and after going through multiple pages. The two of you have decided on a design that would meet the criteria.
“I was planning on sculpting it,” You say, glancing at the other students leaving as the bell dismisses them. “Would you like to join?” You offer him an invitation to join you in the other room in the art class.
Sean’s head perks up at the proposition. It would be just you two–and the teacher outside–but mainly just the two of you alone in a separate room. This is the universe’s gift. It was giving him the opportunity to finally ask you out, and he would be damned if he’s going to let this slip away.
“That sounds perfect actually,” Sean responds, swinging the strap of his backpack over his shoulder. You lead him to the room as he watches you bring out all the supplies you need. A bucket full of clay in between the both the only obstacle of distance.
Sean watches you as you start to work. Noticing the carefulness of your hand when caving the clay. Your fingers are getting dirty with the grey material. The block of wet clay starts to form into a chest cavity. A peaceful silence overtook the both of you. Sean watching your every move, and you being oblivious to his gaze.
He loves how focused you look right now. The way a wrinkle forms on your forehead at your concentration. His eyes fall down to your lips every time you swipe to wet them. The urge to close the distance gnaws at him. He thinks of all the possibilities that could go down if you push him away–kiss him back–or even ignore him for the rest of your life. He desperately hopes it won’t be the latter.
“Would you like to go out on a date sometime?” He blurts out. His eyes widening as the words set in. It just came out; he couldn’t hold these feelings in anymore. He notices how you freeze in place. Your hands resting on the table staining the surface with clay. A heavy feeling starts to dwell in the pitch of his stomach. Your silence is starting to make him think this was a bad idea.
You take a deep inhale before looking at Sean. Your eyes meet his eager gaze waiting for a response. You bite down on your bottom lip chewing on it as you sort your thoughts out. There wasn’t an escape from this. No opportunity getting thrown at you for a topic change.
“I’m sorry Sean, but I'm going to have to decline.” Your rejection fills his senses. A slight ringing starts to form in his ear drums as the following words from your mouth are ignored. He’s sure it’s full of reassurance that it isn’t him and he’ll find someone else. Yet he doesn’t want anyone else. He’s been pinning on you for so long it hurts to even think he has to find someone else.
He lazily nods his head at your words. His gaze focused on the floor, noticing all the dried paint and dust. He swallows the lump forming in his throat. His fingers fiddling with the straps of his backpack.
“It’s all good don’t worry,” He interrupts you. He attempts a smile before it drops to a frown. He can’t hide the emotions splaying on his face. He can’t be here for another minute. He just needs to be at the comfort of his room.
“I’ll just leave you to it,” He says to you standing up from his stool and swinging the backpack over his shoulders. He quickly exits ignoring the spare glance the teacher gives him as he leaves the classroom.
The walk back home isn’t pleasant. His thoughts are endless thinking about his mistakes. He shouldn’t have waited so long. He should’ve become friends with you earlier. The turnout of this could have been so much different.
Maybe he should have just shut his mouth at that moment. He came at you ignoring this was the first time you talked to him. You didn’t know anything about him. He was just another classmate that you didn’t bother to talk to. He definitely ruined every chance of being your friend at least. How would he either way?
He can’t imagine just being your friend. His heart would beg at him to get more out of you. This would be so awkward to move on too. You knew of his feelings now. It’s probably going to be the first thought you get every time you look at him from now on.
He lets out a long groan the moment his body hits the bed. He’s going to have to tell Lyla the next time he sees her about his rejection. That isn’t going to be fun for him. It will probably be more teasing of how he confessed rather than comforting him. He shuts his eyes, finding the urge to just sleep and shut down his thoughts.
Sean dreads his last class the moment he steps foot into the building. He hasn’t seen you in the hallways which was a relief. He hopes that you won’t come up to him with another apology. He doesn’t need pity from you. If anything it would only make him feel worse.
He spends the rest of the day in his thoughts. Thinking how different this day could have been if he didn’t ask you out on a date. He would spend it daydreaming about you and the million possibilities of your future with him. And yet he’s thinking of how to spend the rest of the school year intact. He couldn’t be distracted with this rejection. Even if it felt like a punch to the gut he still had his own responsibilities; work, track, taking care of Daniel.
He tells himself that every time he gets lost in you. The list is thrown away when he sees you at your usual spot looking amazing as always. You were flawless, good-looking, and talented. He shouldn’t have been surprised when you told him no.
You notice him staring at you giving him a polite smile as you go back to your journal. That damn smile. It feels empty now that he has received a genuine smile from you. The two are so different from each other. He sits down at his spot glancing around the room before his eyes set on the project. You finished it the same day. Every curve and dent all with intention from your gentle hands.
Gentle hands that could have held him when things got tough. He would have taken care of you, so you never grow calluses.
The portrait of a human chest being ripped apart resonated with him at the moment. It truly feels like his heart was taken out with the exchange of some void. His feelings were out in the open the moment he confessed. His chest being exposed to infections and blood loss. He doesn’t blame you for this though. It wasn’t your fault he felt like this, but he can’t fulfill your request on moving on.
Sean spends the rest of class looking at your back.
