Anyways uhhh unrelated but I never exactly posted my thoughts on Deltarune Chapter 5! (don't click the read more if you don't like massive spoilers or just don't like when someone's a bit...salty? I feel as if my criticisms are a bit just stupid but who knows. Maybe you can find value in a bunch of broken shards.)
Ok so first off, the praise! The music was pretty good this chapter, which I kinda expected (though I may be biased because some of the songs weirdly reminded me of megaman and that reminds me of when I'd watch my dad play megaman), I quite enjoyed the visual NATURAL humor (i say natural because i have a gripe that unfortunately ties into that), Green, Aqua, and Yellow are cool, AND OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU BLUE BLUE YOU'RE SO COOL I LOVE YOU. Also I quite enjoyed Kawkaw as a person who likes crows and silly little guys, and I liked when Asgore was locked the fuck in (but then I have problems related to his writing), gameplay was pretty fun to me tbh (I LOVE YOU AQUA KNIFE JAWS ATTACK)
now uh, less fun part, the gripes i had. This will be a lot more fleshed out because unfortunately, I tend to *really* flesh out why I dislike something if I'm a fan of the work, this is likely because I'm a Negative Norman who has no fun so if you need to you can just, ignore this. My criticism are just made out of what I expected/wanted to see/what upset me.
First off, oh dear lord the writing. I think. I think in terms of writing and pacing this chapter was probably my least favorite (which I thought TV world earned that title but alas.) because it feels like we linger too much on "HEY GUYS!! LOOK AT THIS!!! LOOK!!! ISN'T THIS FUNNY AND FUN AND WHIMSICAL??? ISN'T THIS SO GOOD????" like it wants to set up for great tragedy so bad but we never get our great tragedy, also Ralsei just felt sort of...out of character this chapter? Like his arc is supposed to be becoming less of a doormat but his dramatic change from ch4 where he still was suppressing himself sort of was jarring. I think hater Ralsei at this stage wouldn't be so outwardly aggressive, moreso passive aggressive. Though also I could've been blind and not recognized when he was like "Ok Kris! I'm gonna be a hater now!"
Flowery just...ok I know he's meant to be a parody of the perfect anime guy but his weird meta awareness he casually spits out at Susie offscreen makes him feel less like a parody and more like a real self insert character which annoys me, which made me not really weep for his death. Even on my first playthrough I wasn't a huge fan of Flowery to the point that I kept yelling every time he came on screen
(I was streaming it with a few friends and wanted to voice act, my favorite characters to voice act were Ralsei and Yellow. Yellow was because I decided instead of voicing out his lines, I just. Sing little snippets of "Friend Inside Me" or "You got a friend in me" and stitch them together so whenever Yellow was like saddened or distraught I'd basically go "FRIEND?? D:")
And speaking of bad pacing, let me introduce you to ASGORE. Honestly, I wanted to see how Asgore's arc would play out, but I felt so...disappointed? Like I expected with how the next chapters are likely gonna fuck us up Asgore's arc was gonna fuck us up too. I thought when he locked in that when we get to the dark fountain, Asgore would be waiting, as if a silent sentinel. He begins to speak, only to turn around to face who he assumes to be the person who made the fountain and see Kris. And he stares in silence and shock, reaching for something and then before we could get any idea on what Asgore was about to do- FWOOSH! THE KNIGHT SWOOPS IN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SHOCK! And then whatever Flowery dies or something. But alas, we needed to redeem Asgore before he can die! (Even though it'd be sick to see debates on if Asgore was going to stay true to his promise or bend and break at the sight of Kris. We could've had a lot of attempts at making the player actually think about Asgore! and maybe if my scenario played out we could've had a bergentrucking reprise...)
Genuinely the ending was the weakest part of the chapter for me.
Let me tell you how much I hate the secret boss. Ok so first off, ah yes we needed someone else ripped straight from undertale with like. Miku in the bg. Oh? What's that? Toby heard I wasn't annoyed enough as is with just another undertale character? Well he also added lousy ass writing AND a dating sim!! And to add icing on the horrid mud cake, of COURSE we needed lore relating to FRIEND (which deconfirmed my fun little hypothesis FRIEND isn't antagonistic it's just...FRIEND. If people wanna hear about my thoughts I'll make a separate post.) from that secret boss! OF COURSE!! JUST WHAT I ALWAYS DREAMED OF. LORE FROM THE MOST DISAPPOINTING PART OF THE CHAPTER. LORE THAT MEANS NOBODY WILL SHUT UP ABOUT THE DISAPPOINTING PART OF THE CHAPTER. First off, WHY WAS NOBODY FUCKING CONCERNED THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER LIGHTNER IN THE FUCKING DARK WORLD????? WHY ARE WE SO OUT OF CHARACTER FOR THIS????? Pink to me felt like. She felt like a second case of Flowery where I think she was meant to be a parody but comes off as just. The other self insert OC. I like her concept! The idea of a trans woman (EVEN THOUGH I DONT THINK WE HAD ANY HINTS IN THIS GAME GOD DAMMIT) being a secret boss is really cool! It fits with how secret bosses tend to try and mess with fate somehow, so a literal trans person, someone who's defying fate by choosing their own identity is cool! But it's wasted on just another Undertale character. I wish we had a unique character instead of just. Mad Mew Mew again. A new trans woman would've been awesome, hell even another NONBINARY boss!!! I'd love that, but alas. We can't have nice things. I hate the dating sim part since...it feels icky to me. Very yucky. Ew. The vibes are rancid. I loved what could've been but...I don't think any shadow boss will get much better than Eram to me (Eram's my favorite because they're so fucked up and horrifying) and I'm just. Disappointed that this was our last shadow boss. A sad pathetic whimper and weak parallel. I think if I had to make the shadow boss, I'm keeping the trans in there! BUT instead of being a lazy parallel for "the player and kris" it'd instead be A PARALLEL FOR RALSEI!!! YAYYYYY!!! And maybe I'd add some horror bits? Psychological maybe? I don't know I think it'd be fun for secret bosses to be fucked up and weird and scary. I feel as if so many shadow bosses are just tied to Kris rather than Susie or Ralsei which somewhat stinks because...I wanna see a shadow boss that's tied to Ralsei. It'd be great.
Overall, musicwise and gameplaywise, it's one of my favorites by far! But...storywise...it's the worst. It somehow made ch3 look like fucking GOURMET STORY (I dislike ch3 because it was so slow BUT EVEN THEN THERE WAS A REASON.) (also the reason i don't bring up how "haha literally the japan chapter" is because...I don't know if I'd have a satisfying opinion on it. Like, it's...a theme...I guess.)
(Also I'm aware Gerson's a secret boss and if I hear one more "Duhhhh it's the fun chapter! Duhhhhh we have Gerson!" I'm gonna. I'M GONNA DO SOMETHING. Because I am aware of Gerson, he was fine because he was the ONLY Undertale character until Pink. Gerson was also fine because HIS WRITING WAS GOOD! HE ACTUALLY HAD TIES WITH SUSIE INSTEAD OF KRIS!)
(also if i hear another "Well duhhhh chapter 6 will make chapter 5 make sense" i will hurt people because IM JUDGING THIS ON THE CONTENT WE HAVE NOT THE CONTENT WE MAY GET. I criticize based off what we currently know and have, if I need A DIFFERENT CHAPTER just for this one to be good, I'm sorry that just means the chapter is bad. Because even if ch3 released with ch4 I still had negative opinions on it. Ch6 will not change that.)
(also for weird route opinions i think it was fucked up and by far the best part of the chapter)
