So I've recently gotten into cross stitch...
My observations from being in a poly relationship.
My husband and I have been in an open relationship for about four years now. It has definitely had its ups and downs, but I think we're finally nailing it (pun intended.)
1. I'm an Extrovert and he is an Introvert. This has led to some complications. I had no problem finding a partner, where as he was always feeling left out.
2. We don't like to call ourselves Polyamorous. We both seek friends with benefits, or fuckbuddies if you will, and that has made our core relationship stronger.
3. I have BPD. Borderlines tend to flee and run when a relationship gets stronger or more intense. My husband noticed that and has embraced that my sexual freedom keeps me with him. It sounds messed up, and it is, but if I wasn't sleeping around, we wouldn't be together. I would have given in to my urges and wound up alone.
4. POLY DOES NOT MEAN WE WIFE-SWAP. We don't do any trading off or try to seek out couples. I am strictly anti-men in a relationship, while my husband prefers women in open relationships. It's totally fine for us to have separate preferences.
5. COMMUNICATION. My husband doesn't always like to know about my exploits, but I love hearing about his. It makes me happy when he is happy. And I totally understand his apprehension with my side action being that I AM Borderline and therefore prone to succumbing to my emotions.
6. Poly life does not mean we are bad people. We have a strong marriage. We have kids. We have pets and jobs and our own place. We aren't hippie degenerates who live off of the land and have wild orgies. We are mostly (tattooed, pierced, and blue-haired) normal people.
7. Finally, you need to have extreme trust. I have never left my husband. I will never leave my husband. He will never leave me. We've established that nothing is too broken to fix. That's why poly life works for us.
If you are considering becoming poly, please make sure you set ground rules and expectations before you even start. Some of my fwb's were ex boyfriends. Some were coworkers. Many partners won't allow that kind of relationship. This is why rules need to be set in stone before you attempt to seek other people.
Some tips for driving with anxiety
I was in a bad wreck a year ago today. I was t-boned by a drunk driver who ran a red light on the driver side of my little car. Car was totalled, I was a mess, and over this past year, I've compiled a list of what helps me when I'm getting panicked and driving around. (Feel free to add anything that helps you too.) 1. Turn your music WAY up. Like, deafening volume. Scream the song lyrics. Fuck anyone who points and laughs. You'll start to feel better. 2. If you live in an area like mine with very little parallel parking, back into every parking spot. It may take some getting used to, and you may need to straighten out a few times, but it definitely helps to see ahead of you when leaving. Less anxiety about hitting pedestrians or another car. 3. Wait until both lanes are totally clear before making a turn. You may get honked at, but your safety is more important than that asshole named Trent behind you. Fuck you, Trent. 4. Hug the yellow line in narrow roads.. I know it sounds odd, but my anxiety goes through the roof when I go off the road a bit. 5. Get a larger vehicle if you are in the market. I drove a Kia Spectra when I was wrecked and I am an absolute mess when I have to drive a smaller car. I drive an old Ford Escape now and I feel much better when I'm high off the ground. More secure, if you will. 6. Driving with kids in the car is a whole other monster. My kids are perceptive of when I'm getting tense because I'm open with them about my fears. They're young, but they know to keep their voices down when I start getting white-knuckled on my wheel. Don't lie to your kids, basically. 7. If you smoke cigarettes, wait until you get to a stop sign or stoplight to light up. No distractions. 8. Same goes for eating/drinking/etc. Stop signs are your friends. 9. If you get to the point of hyperventilating, pull over as soon as you can. Your destination needs you there alive. 10. You can do it. I never thought I'd drive again. I was so terrified. Every car looked like the one that almost killed me. Every driver looked drunk or high. But I'm driving every day almost and I feel so much more confident.
