Winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (with George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black). Elion invented 6-mercaptopurine, azathioprine, allopurinol, pyrimethamine, acyclovir, and trimethoprim.

Elion had a tough time in her early scientific career overcoming gender bias, but was rewarded for her perseverance and brilliance with a Nobel Prize.
