peyton has never been bashful.  she airs on the side of bold and confident, no matter if she should be or not.  even as maeve moves in carefully, treading lightly, making absolutely sure that this moment between them wouldn’t ruin anything, peyton fights the urge to rush.  instead she only nods.  she lets the other girl attempt to lead, and when she still leans in a bit too slow, the blonde finishes eliminating the space between.  

hands take hold of maeve, their bodies still upright on the cot until peyton pulls her best friend into her lap.   “it’s nice that you asked, @sarvival, but i’m always okay with this. it’s my favorite activity, actually.”   lips hover close as the two smile, falling into each other and another kiss.  

MAEVE’S  STILL  CAREFUL,   TAKING  BABY  STEPS  WITH  THEIR  RELATIONSHIP.    this  is  all  she’s  ever  wanted.    well,   all  she  wanted  was  to  have  peyton  in  her  life.    but  to  be  able  to  have  something  more,   is  a  dream  that  came  true.    which  explains  the  anxiety  over  this.     but  the  moment  their  lips  touch,   all  that  is  washed  away.    every  stupid  voice  in  her  head  silences  and  all  she  can  focus  is  this  wildfire  of  a  girl  in  her  arms.

sam is familiar in the effect that peyton has on others.     the mournful sorrow that clings to one’s bones when they know that they are on peyton’s bad side.     it’s like a sharp blade picking at someone,  not close enough to leave a mark,  but enough to be uncomfortable.     sam understands maeve’s words,  even when they take on the prolonged sounds of a drunken undercurrent.     she has monty’s moonshine clinging to her lips,  still sloshing around in her cup as well,  and sam is sure is amplifying her emotions in that moment,  though clouded and polluted.     sam moves to sit next to her,  welcoming the warm blanket of heat that the campfire provides.     the flames licks at the gathered sticks and leaves that the delinquents gathered and hoped would last them through the night.

“you didn’t do anything wrong,”     sam reassures.     he’s unsure of the fight shared between maeve and peyton,  but he knows that even beneath peyton’s ivory armor,  her heart beats softer than his own.     peyton cares with a passion that burns deep within her,  and he knows that whatever maeve is worried about,  they will be able to work through.     “why wouldn’t you want to know?”     sam inquires,  reaching to the cup that is in her hand and lifting it to his own lips.     but not without a wince afterwards to signify the sharpness of the alcohol as it warms his throat all the way down to dissolve in his stomach.     “wouldn’t it be better than worrying yourself sick?”

SHE’S  SAID  THE  SAME  TO  HERSELF.    that  she  didn’t  actually  do  something  wrong,  certainly  doesn’t  think  that  she’s  hurt  peyton  deep  enough  to  warrant  this  type  of  response.    but  no  matter  how  many  times  she  says  this  to  herself  or  hears  someone  else  tell  her,    it’s  not  enough  to  drive  the  doubt  away.    “    it’s  always  harder,  isn’t  it ?   to  face  the  truth  ?    to-   to  learn  you  hurt  the  person  you  love  without  even  realizing  it  ?   ”     it  scares  her,   the  possibility  that  she  did  something  like  that.     perhaps  because  she’s  been  on  the  other  side  of  it.
