Day 140 // Two things that help me thrive-- sunlight and good company. In this instance I had both. Yesterday I was lucky enough to spend part of the afternoon wandering around an abandoned bike park with my talented sister-in-law. We bonded over the trickiness of painting trees, each discussing our process to translate them on a page. It only made sense then for me to work from that conversation in today's piece. Trees are challenging, but it's important to practice in the struggle. Hopefully this is an extension of the words we shared yesterday. #COTFAintroduction // I feel like I know so many of you from your beautiful feeds & various conversations via the comment sections; consequently it seems a bit odd just now introducing myself😁 I'm a mom of a 6-month-old boy, a wife, a wannabe yogi, a thrifter, audiobook addict, shy extrovert, & most importantly, a work-in-progress. I have been an artsy-fartsy mess for as long as I can remember. Many of my early memories involve making collages, stitching together Barbie clothes, & begging my little sister to let me do her makeup. I doodled my way through high school and didn't take a formal art class until college. I set out to major in PoliSci until I took a drawing class with a painting professor who changed my path. He helped me cultivate a deep love for painting & the creative journey. College however, as I found out, exists in a protective bubble that didn't exactly prepare me for what was next. I "lifed" pretty hard the two years following college. The impact of a very challenging and unconventional childhood-- which I had pushed away up to that point-- finally caught up to me in the absence of the student-athlete hustle I previously submerged myself in the 8 years prior. In those 2 years I fought an eating disorder & I created boundaries with my chaos. I felt isolated & my art suffered for it. Or more accurately, I stopped producing anything. Feeling like I had no ear, or outlet, to pour myself into, the emotions I had managed to stifle for so long poured out of me. This was a dark time during what was supposed to be the start of my new life, but slowly I came to realize that I had to sort through my past before I went any further. Ultimately, through being painfully honest with myself, I began to heal. The end of 2015 was the beginning of so much good in my life. From a broken past I found purpose. I gave birth to the light of my life. And on the last day of the year I resolved to use my art to continue my journey. To tell my story. I have found out so much about myself through my devotion to this project, & I have been so inspired by the art and community I have found here on Instagram.
