“Mm, morning, Grim,” Yuu says, getting up and looking at herself in the mirror as she gets dressed.
Damn, I’ve gotten curvier. Have I always been this way? I could’ve sworn I didn’t look like this when I first got here.
Yuu turns around, and looks at her shirt. She feels her chest feeling out the sides.
My boobs got bigger too. Maybe I’ve just gained weight while I’m here.
“Hey, Grim, you ready to go to class?” Yuu asks, picking up her dear direbeast.
“Yep, I’m ready to finally get out of here!” Grim mewls, his muscular lengthy body snuggling their chest.
As Yuu walks to the main campus, the students walking around her stare like she’s an oddity out of the freak circus. Most of their eyes stare at her face, and Grim who has decided to walk next to Yuu. The direbeast taking strides like he’s a Big Cat.
“Oh, yall, don’t worry. He’s kinda big, but he’s a sweetheart, I promise,” Yuu exclaims, waving to the nearby students who quickly walk away from her.
“Hey, Yuu! Wanna hang out with the rest of the first years after classes are done?” Ace asks, a passerby raising their eyebrows. “We’ve got free tarts.”
“Sure, I’m down. By the way, do you know where to get extra uniforms? I think mine are going to stop fitting me soon,” Yuu asks, waving hi to Jack, Epel, and Sebek.
Yuu looks Epel up and down and smiles.
“Wow, Epel. You’re about as tall as Rook now. Talk about a growth spurt,” Yuu giggles, making Epel side eye her.
“Yuu, you need to get more rest. I’ve always been this tall,” Epel responds, laughing with you. “I mean the heels add a bit of height. I admit that.”
“Yes, really. You need to get more rest.”
“Hm, ok. I could’ve sworn you were really short.”
Potions class was always a bit difficult for Yuu, but either the fumes or heat were causing her to get a headache.
“Yuu, if you’re feeling unwell, we can get someone to escort you to the nurses offices,” Crewel says, lightly tapping her head with the whip.
Yuu’s vision of Crewel begins to swirl until it resembles something out of a dream. Crewel’s face being the only thing pronounced.
“Your face…something is wrong with your face,” Yuu slurs, touching Crewel’s cheeks as he crouches down to look at her. “You look older.”
“Azul, take her to the nurses office, immediately!” Crewel yells, holding your head as you pass out.
When you wake up in the nurses office, you see a note from the nurse and a potion bottle.
Drink this potion. It should cure your headache. Come back if symptoms become severe or there are additional symptoms.
Grim crawls onto your chest, and you sit up looking at the plaques of dorm symbols on the wall.
“Spelldrive dorm winners over the ages. Looks like…I guess Diasomnia finally lost. Leona would be really proud,” Yuu says, getting up to read more.
When she reads Diasomnia’s plaque, a pit forms in her stomach to the point it feels like she’ll eat herself inside out. Her finger touches the words just to make sure they’re real, and her mouth opens.
“Diasomnia remained on top mainly due to its dorm leader, Malleus Draconia. He was inducted into the hall of fame in his third year, and graduated a year later,” Yuu whispers, the words coming out of her mouth so quietly as if she were reading a curse.
That can’t be possible. This has to be wrong. Malleus should still be a third-year. They told me he was doing an early internship.
The door opens and Yuu quickly defaults to walking to the nearby bathroom.
“Hey, Yuu, I heard you weren’t feeling well in potions class. How are you feeling?” Ace questions, grabbing your wrist.
“I’m fine. I think the fumes just got to me,” Yuu answers, looking at the floor. “Can you drop off my classwork at Ramshackle? I’m heading home.”
Yuu pulls her wrist away from Ace and grabs Grim, hurrying out the infirmary. When she gets back to Ramshackle, she drops Grim on the bed and immediately goes to the bathroom. She splashes cold water on her face, and looks at herself in the mirror. The glass turns a swirling red and the Yuu staring back is someone who is tired. Their eyes have dark circles and bags, and her hair is greying from stress.
“AAAAAHHHHHH!” Her mirror doppelgänger shrieks, making Yuu jump back.
When she stands up, the Yuu in the mirror is gone, and her reflection is back to normal. She sighs, looking down at the sink full of water, and has her face pulled down by a hand coming out of the water. She struggles to breathe, bubbles rising to the surface. Her body goes completely still, and when her face comes out of the water, her eyes are filled with exhaustion.
She touches the greying parts of her hair, pulling them out, not caring if she gets a bald spot. Afterwards Yuu walks out the bathroom, grabs a flashcard and pen, then returns to the sink. Yuu writes on the flashcard five important things:
1. You’re 19 years old. Three years have gone by
2. Don’t trust anything people have told you
4. Don’t trust Jamil. He’ll rewrite you every time.
5. You made this card on May 4, 20XX
Once Yuu is done, she sticks the card in her pillow and walks out the door. She shambles across campus to the Hall of Mirrors like a wet zombie, and goes through Diasomnia’s mirror. She enters the gothic castle, and stares at everyone.
“Where is Silver?!” She yells, her eyes puffy and erratic.
A terrified student points her upstairs while trying not to make eye contact. Yuu rubs up the stairs, and gently knocks on Silver’s door.
“Yuu, what happened-“Silver asks, opening the door, only to be choked and locked in his room with Yuu.
“I have been trapped in my head for over a year!” Yuu cries, her fingers squeezing Silver’s throat. “Do you have any idea what that’s like? Constantly being gaslighted, and told it’s your first fucking year of school again and again, meanwhile everything around you changes!”
Silver’s face becomes blue, and Yuu releases him letting air into his lungs.
“I’m sorry, we were all just trying to help,” Silver croaks, slowly turning over and grabbing a bottle of water.
“Silver, why is the door locked? I heard screaming,” Sebek exclaims, jiggling the door handle.
“Shit,” Yuu grumbles, rubbing her head.
Sebek unlocks the door with magic, and Yuu kicks the door closed, using her weight to keep it that way.
“Yuu, stop it. You’re confused, you’ve got the wrong idea,” Sebek says, trying to force the door open.
“Oh really, then what should I be thinking?” Yuu replies, not noticing Silver grabbing a small, metal, desk lamp.
“I’m sorry,” Silver whispers, knocking Yuu out and letting her fall into his arms.
“What are we going to do with her?”
“Well we need to think of something. What are we going to do once we graduate in one years? Let her wander around campus believing she’s 16 and a freshman when she’s damn near grown?”
“Besides, it’s getting harder to explain away the changes.”
“Maybe we can let her live with one of us while we do internships?”
“Oh, and I’m sure that’ll go well. You get a second chance to convince her that you’re her boyfriend, Ace.”
“You know that’s not what happened, Epel.”
“Enough, let’s contact everyone else and see if we can all come up with a believable story for Yuu when we have to fix her. No matter what, she can’t know that she’s never going home.”
When Yuu wakes up, she’s in silk pajamas in an elegant purple room. Her hair smells like roses, and her skin is so soft it feels like she was just birthed from Aphrodite.
“Hi, sleep well?” Epel says, giving her a cup of apple juice and some pills.
“Slept just fine,” Yuu replies, sitting up and trying to get out of bed.
“I fixed your hair. You know, we’re trying to help you. Why can’t you let us take care of you?” Epel states, putting a hand on Yuu’s cheek. “It’ll be so much easier for everyone if you just behaved.”
“In the living room eating some lunch.”
Yuu cries, tears streaming down her face and making a small puddle. Epel hugs her and rests his head on her shoulder.
“Don’t cry, you’ll be back to normal soon. Jamil should be here soon,” Epel comforts, kissing her cheek.
A door opens somewhere in the distance, and Ace walks into the room.
“Hey, Jamil is here,” Ace says, looking at Yuu.
“Yuu, eat these pills and this’ll all be a blur,” Epel says, picking up the pills.
Yuu folds her lips, sealing them shut and turns her head. Epel struggles with her and grabs her mouth, forcing his fingers into Yuu’s mouth. She bites his fingers, and he yelps in pain.
“Ace, come help me!” Epel yells, holding his hand.
Ace comes rushing over and holds Yuu’s limbs still as Epel uses his good hand to force the pills into Yuu’s mouth and wash them down with apple juice. Once they’re down her throat, the two boys back away from Yuu as she vehemently coughs and becomes still with her eyes wide open.
The last thing Yuu sees is Jamil standing over and her vision going red.
“Out of all the things that bird taught us, I’m glad he showed us how to expand the capabilities of our unique magic,” Jamil says, looking at Yuu’s self fade and twist into something new again.
“Thank you, Kalim! I cant believe you’re letting me stay here!” Yuu exclaims, hugging Kalim and waving at Jamil. “Are you sure your family doesn’t mind?”
“Don’t worry, they’re totally cool with it,” Kalim responds, leading Yuu to her room. “I gave you a room with plenty of space for you and Grim.”
“Woah, it’s so pretty. Come on, Grim, let’s go settle into our new room!” Yuu squeals, falling onto the bed. “It’s so soft!”
“I’m glad you like it. Dinner is at 6, I hope I see you and Grim there.”
As Yuu decorates the room with her belongings, a card falls out of her pillow case. She picks it up and her head begins to hurt.
Don’t trust anything, don’t trust anybody, don’t trust Jamil…..Today’s date is-
Yuu quickly leaves the room and runs into Minhaj carrying a plate of food. He chokes on his drink when he sees her, and looks her up and down.
“Yuu?” Minhaj questions, his mouth almost agape.
“That’s me. What is today’s date?” Yuu says, looking at Minhaj become frazzled and put his food down.
“It’s March 23rd. What are you doing here? You left for your world years ago? Did you get stuck here again?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Headmage Ambrose found a way back. He told Crowley this. Did no one tell you?”
“…where’s Kalim and Jamil?”
Yuu runs off to the gardens, dodging staff members. She stalks through the greenery like a predator until she spots Kalim and Jamil sitting by a water fountain.
“There was a way back home? And none of you told me,” Yuu says, her voice cracking.
The two young men turn to Yuu with wide eyes.
“Who told you that?” Jamil asks, getting up and walking to Yuu, who steps back.
“Minhaj did. He said Ambrose told Crowley,” Yuu answers, staring down Jamil.
“Well he’s confused or lying,” Jamil says, his hands holding yours.
“He’s one of the more truthful members of this palace and you know it.”
Kalim gets up and goes to Yuu, going on his knees to hold her legs like a clingy baby.
“Please, you have to understand. You couldn't go. We'd all fall apart without. Even Crowley knew that, that's why he never told you there was a way home. That's why he showed us to how to keep you here. I don't see what the problem is anyway. You come from a land of no magic, you should be amazed just being here," Kalim rambles, making Yuu feel suffocated.
"No, no, no, DON'T YOU START!" Yuu yells, getting the two males off of her.
"We're trying to make you happy!" Kalim screams, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"Yuu, please stop, you're hysterical," Jamil says, calmly, about to approach her again.
"You know what would make me happy? ALL OF YOU FUCKING OFF AND DYING SO I CAN GO HOME!" Yuu lashes, earning her a look of shock from her former friends.
Kalim whimpers and he slowly goes to ground like a wilting flower.
“I’m so sorry,” Jamil says, his voice flat and emotionless.
Before she could even process his words, Jamil smashes her head against the garden walls. Yuu releases a small but shrill shriek, then slides down to the floor where blood begins to pool.
“Jamil, what did you do?” Kalim weeps, quickly crawling over to Yuu.
“She’s fine. She just needed a head injury for this work,” Jamil replies, picking Yuu up and carrying her into the palace.
“Mm, my head hurts,” Yuu groans, holding her bandaged head.
“I know it’ll be hurting for a while. Your head took a really nasty hit when you fell down the stairs, Jamil says, bringing Yuu some tea and medicine. “The doctors said it’d be better for you to recover in a less condensed area. You know, less things for your brain to process. Luckily, Malleus has kindly made the offer to let you and Grim stay in his castle while you recover.”
“Oh, that’s really nice of him. I’d love to stay with him and his family,” Yuu comments, drinking some tea.
“Good. We’ve already packed your bags,” Jamil states, sitting next to Yuu on her bed.
Life at Malleus’s castle had been stable for the two months Yuu has been there. She spent time with Lilia, Malleus, Silver, and Sebek, and they each watched after her to make sure she didn’t take any more falls. Malleus even let Yuu wander around the royal gardens so shd could get some fresh air. This palace was beginning be one of the few places Yuu considered home.
“Grim, open your mouth! What do you have in there?” Yuu exclaims, forcing open Grim’s mouth and pulling out a flashcard. “Ugh, Grim, you can’t just eat whatever’s in the ground.”
“If it’s on the ground it’s free game!” Grim hisses, sitting on his fluffy large cat bed.
“You’re gonna get sick one day,” Yuu replies, wiping the spit off the flashcard and reading the somewhat smudged words.
“Nyah, human, why do you look so scared?” Grim asks, walking up to Yuu. “Is your head hurting again?”
“Nope, I’m fine,” Yuu replies, her smile twitching as she looks at herself in the mirror. “It’s all fine. I’m just going to go to bed early.”
Yuu folds the flashcard and tucks it into her sock, and she gets into bed staring at the ceiling even when Grim has long fallen asleep. Her head pondered every decision she made, making her spiral into anxiety.
Maybe it would’ve been better if the real me was still stuck in my subconscious?
Maybe it would’ve been better if I had made more friends at RSA?
Maybe I should’ve broken the mirror in my bathroom and ended it all?
Maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe I-
“Yuu, go to sleep,” Malleus says, his bright green eyes illuminating his long claws holding her bedroom door. “Does your head hurt?”
“…. what?” Yuu croaks, snapping out of her mental spiral.
“You’re holding your bottle of painkillers.”
“Oh, I didn’t even realize.”
He walks into your room, and gets into bed with Yuu . He takes the pill bottle from her hands, putting it back in the nightstand drawer. His tail wraps around her waist, and he holds Yuu tenderly.
“I know you broke his spell again.”Malleus says, looking into your eyes and stroking your hair. “Tell me, what’s so bad about us and our world that you’re always so ready to go home?”
“I want my parents and family back. Why don’t any of you understand? I don’t belong here,” Yuu whimpers, crying into Malleus’s chest.
“Shh, we’ll talk more in the morning.”
Yuu watched as Malleus fell into a deep sleep with her in his arms. The moonlight from her window shines down on her and suddenly she has an epiphany. She slowly gets herself out of Malleus’s grip, carefully replacing her body with a pillow. Yuu grabs Grim and jumps out of the three story window. She checks for guards and makes her escape to the one boy who has always hated the boys from Night Raven College. Rollo Flamme.”
