godâs honest truth đ
my epilogue
Omg yes there is an article that everyone needs to see!!
Stranger Things' final season missed a major opportunity to give Will Byers a proper romantic storyline by the end.
It's nice to see Collider -- which I assume is NOT an insignificant publication as they had that exclusive interview with the Duffers where they claimed to have known Mileven would be endgame from the beginning -- publish this piece which basically presents the Byler perspective to a broader audience.
Only thing missing was citing the community's belief that the show QUEERBAITED. Still, it basically lays out the case pretty well for the general public, and it points out the show's worse treatment for its queer characters and relationships compared to its straight characters and relationships.
Hoping for more coverage!
Make sure to leave a comment!

Two best guy friends playfighting. Sure nothing can possibly go wrong with this concept.
Look, guys, i just wanted to draw smth cute, alright
So I little follow up on this post of mine
I told myself I would watch the finale either way but in the hours leading up to it I decided I would see what the reaction were like here, and Iâm happy I did that, I fill not be watching it.
So Iâm once again repeating my point
Queerbait is intentional
Creelby parallels ? Intentional
Rovickie parallels ? Intentional
Blue and yellow ? Intentional, especially after they saw that we were analysing it that way
Never denying Byler in the last three years ? Intentional
They did not have to write it like this
Will Byers storyline, if it was going to end this way could have been dealt with so much more care.
He didnât HAVE TO be in love with Mike
And even if you wanted to portray him being in love/having a crush on one of his childhood close friends (anyone in the party possible) they could have made this storyline the duration of only one season (like Dustin crush on Max) and then have plenty of time to give him a fully fledge love interest
But they didnât do any of that. They used the queer suffering and queer love to uplift their endgame couple at the detriment of their gay character.
They didnât deny the possibility of byler three years ago for a reason.
They were very intentionally queerbaiting us
We should very much remember this, make our anger show, and never ever again give all the creators involved in the making of these any of our money or our time.
(Also to Ao3 we go, and we stay together as a community, we keep shipping our boys, that they are not canon should not change the fact that we ship them cause shipping has nothing to do with the fact that we are mad)
michael you need to lock tf in its all up to you now.

âI mean what did you think, really? That a show about nerds and outcasts was gonna have a well-written queer romance? That, in the end, queer love could help save the world?â
Yeah I guess I did. I really did.
I'm... so confused?
What was the purpose of the scene about queer signals, if Will was never going to receive queer signals? Why was the question concerned with the obviousness of signals, and not the mere presence of them? Why use the term "shared looks" when that was a known call and response on set for Noah and Finn?
What was the meaning of the snowball and avalanche metaphor? Why include that scene at all? Where was the payoff?
You're going to write an entire meta scene on queer signals of attraction, include examples that we have already observed, indicate an eventual pay off... and not let it pay off? Why? To be malicious?
You tell the audience through Will that Mike was just his Tammy this entire time and expect us to believe it? Was Tammy in Robin's video tape? Did Robin know Tammy since she was five? Did Tammy run after her in the rain or recognize her breathing over the radio?
And Will Byers never got kissed. Will Byers witnessed queer love, queer joy, and queer intimacy through a kiss at the beginning of the season, wanting that for himself because he's a romantic... and never even got kissed. Not even by his epilogue boyfriend.
iâm so sorry will byers. iâm so sorry you were tortured since you were 12. iâm so sorry you were assaulted then written to sympathize with your rapist. iâm so sorry your feelings were used to fix a straight relationship, time after time. iâm so sorry they only used you in vol3 to comfort Mike. iâm so sorry you were forced to come out by your rapist to people you didnât even know. iâm so sorry for how much pain youâve been through. iâm so sorry they robbed of you of your happy ending to satisfy homophobic audiences. iâm so sorry they gave you a line-less boyfriend in the epilogue when you deserved Mike. iâm so sorry you had your childhood ripped out from under you. iâm so sorry you grew up with an abusive father which is barely addressed. iâm so sorry your pain was just used to further the narrative through every season. iâm so sorry you were written by straight men. iâm so sorry they donât care about you. iâm so sorry they handled your beautiful character with such dismissive carelessness. iâm so sorry.
With this piece i bid the show farewell.
Thank you, stranger things, for the good and the bad you provided. We as future creators will learn from both.
Them in fantasy x dnd au with Skyrim soundtrack again bc im a sucker for that like you donât know
Guys, I just realized something
If Will is openly flirting with Mike after Robin's explanation about love signals it means that Mike HAS broken up with El
There is no way he would flirt with Mike knowing that he is still together with El, have we forgotten season 4?? Omg...
WE ARE SO FUCKING DUMB IM CRYINGđđ
So apperently Will was a homewrecker this entire time... these writers are going to super hell I fucking can't

Iâve Slept (Barely) On It & I Still Believe (Why Like This? â Itâs Actually Quite Beautiful Reasoning)
Things to know
Playgate â Will is not Will since the end of 5x05. Everything since then is being told by the POV of Vecna / the Mind Flayer AS IF they won. âCheckmate. We lost.â (said at the end of 5x08 by the party).
Fakefinalegate â WSQK has been hinting at this since 5x08 released, and all season for that matter, and that it will âbe using a backup until 11PMâ UK time. Why would WSQK (that costs money and resources to keep going) still be airing if that was really the end?
wherewereyouat11pmuktimejanuaryfirst2026gate
References to this analysis: The Ultimate Volume Two Analysis of All Analyses Supercut of All Supercuts Elaganza Extravaganza in Support of Byler : r/byler for evidence of meta dialogue regarding âslow and steady wins the raceâ âpatience pays offâ, etc. in the Pacing and Slow Burn Dialogue section.
Huge shoutout to u/No_Tubleweek1003 on Reddit for posting all the WSQK updates â the references in WSQK have been insane and so important to the foreshadowing of fakefinalegate. They have to mean something. It all has to mean something. Hereâs my own post about all the WSQK hints I could clock before I had to go to sleep: IT ISN'T OVER - FAKEFINALEGATE : r/byler
I had heard the fakefinalegate rumours before going into volume three and honestly I didnât think I believed it, I thought, yeah, even with Will possessed, it could be resolved in the 2h08 finale. Boy, was I wrong.
In 1x01 and 1x08, if you recall, Mikeâs DnD campaign went on for 10 hours and he asked his mom for 20 more minutes to finish the campaign. 10 hours and 20 minutes. Season five as it is right now is exactly 10 hours and 20 minutes of runtime. Karen denied the extra time and they finish the campaign in 1x08. When they finish the campaign, the boys complain that it is full of plot holes, it had a crap ending, it was too easy. âThatâs it?! But what about⌠(such and such). 10 hours and 20 minutes was not enough time to wrap everything up.
WSQK hint heard at 1:09AM MST
Vance: âAnother hour might be done but itâs not our last hour. We have plenty of time left to crank it up to eleven. If you donât know by now, our volume always needs to go up to eleven.â
To me this could mean one of two things: âthe volume needs to go up to eleven.â The volumes will add up to eleven episodes. Meaning, we would get three more episodes. Three more episodes to make up for 5x06 â 5x08, the playgate episodes. Or the fake finale becomes null and void and the volumes add up to eleven hours. Meaning, we would get a new real finale that has a run time of 2 hours and 52 minutes.
Crickets
We hear crickets at the very beginning of 5x08. We also hear crickets when Mike has a weird moment (a moment of realisation that itâs not real) staring into the speakers during the epilogue graduation. Hopper also says something about crickets during the Enzo date scene.
Crickets are synonymous for something THAT DOESNâT LAND. Itâs what you hear when a joke doesnât land or when A PLAY IS BAD, when something is not resonating with the audience.
5x07 Murray says, âWell, I was hoping for a slightly more delicate landing but thatâll do.â (El: âYouâre welcome.â)
WSQK Hints
As soon as the âfinaleâ ended, I KNEW I had to hop back into the WSQK station for answers because there was NO WAY that finale was real. We all got Vecnaâd. We all went crazy together, we got PLAYED like a goddamn record. WSQK hints go on forever, truly. Iâve analyzed so much of it since 8:30pm MST last night, and I still think I havenât even scratched the surface but here is some of my analyses.
Mindy Flare: âA quick PSA, if youâre still hearing static from us, weâd like to issue a formal apology. Weâd hope going on a backup might have fixed things. Might be worth checking if your receiver is connected to the flux capacitor in your radios.â Aka Duffers: âI know we havenât addressed anything, so take this as a formal apology. Itâs a backup, and we thought it was the best way to go about it.â
Tons more confirmation that something is going down at 11pm UK Time and the finale is a fake (backup). Such as, âBut Iâll save that story for 11pmâ, âNobody panic! We are operating on a backup but the backup is only good until 11pm!â, âWe are only spinning records until 11pmâ, âFor now, weâre limping along on backup powerâ, âI hope they have enough juice in the backup (generator) to make it to 11pm tonight. Hawkins the energy never, ever, stops here. The hits donât quit! Stick with us all the way until the bitter end.â I could go and on, but Iâll spare you the repetition.
Vance: âMindy Flare and I will be bringing WSQK into dock at 11pm tonight. And yeah, the waters are gonna be choppy with the signal and eh, thatâs all Iâve got for sea references.â Sounds very much like docking a ship. The showâs flagship ship.
Approx. 10:30AM â 11:00AM â Living On A Prayer. âWoah, weâre half way there!â Literally at the halfway mark between the fake finale and the real episodes releases for my time zone. Followed by:
Approx. 11:10AM â Never Ending Story. Our story is not over!
11:20AM â Alive and Kicking. âStay until your love is, your love is alive and kicking.â
Faith â George Michael is like the first song to play after the âfinaleâ wraps up.
Abracadabra â Steve Miller Band. Also donât know if anyone else clocked this but the young cast (Noah, Gaten, Lucas, Fynn, Sadie, Millie) makes a point to talk about / bring up Mayhem by Lady Gaga, especially Abracadabra during their press tour. At first I thought, âhm thatâs randomâ, and I love Gaga. That and Noah in press, talking about the coming out scene like this: âit felt likeâŚalmost like a playâŚwhere I had to likeâŚperform in front of an audience.â Playgate literally confirmed.
A little nugget that, if you donât believe in coincidences anymore, might mean nothing but they play King of Pain â The Police, if you take a look at the cover of that record, itâs literally a line of blue, a line of yellow, and a line of red. Itâs giving: Mike + Will vs. Vecna.
One more for ya: âHawkins had its first babies of the year and theyâre twins! (The Duffers), The parents (Netflix? Execs?) were never expecting to buy two of everything!â â they were never expecting theyâd have to make two versions of 5x06-5x08 or two versions of the finale if the âvolume is going up to eleven.â
WSQK and In-Show Hints Around Anti-Conformity
âWeâre making waves at the Hawkins community pool. But you gotta follow those pool rules, so WALK, donât run.â More on this later. The emphasis on pacing and slow burn is so important.
âIn true Squawk fashion, we are not going quietly.â
âHawkins Fried Chicken: we know strange things are happening out there, but your friends are here still taking orders (our protagonists still with us, under Vecna/Mindflayer influence). A lot has changed in Hawkins, but our original recipe (original message, uplift the outcasts, staying true to it) always stays the same! Resistance is necessary. Stay vigilant.â
5x01 Dialogue
Lucas/Will/Dustin: âYou gotta stop provoking them, man.â âYouâre drawing attention! Remember what Hop said, âwe need to keep our heads down.â âFollow the rules, blend in.â âAre you guys hearing yourselves right now? Blend in? Follow the rules? Thatâs not what weâve ever done! We stay true to ourselves! We stay true to our friends. We stand up for whatâs right, no matter the cost!â
Stranger Things has famously broken so many 80âs tropes: Jopper, Jancy, Lumax. In fact, the most conventional couples are the most miserable: Karen and Ted, Mike and El in season four. The show has so much content that goes against conformity. Eddieâs speech in 4x01, âConformity is killing the kids.â âHas it ever occurred to you, we donât want to be popular?â Lucasâ WHOLE ARC in season four.
Remember David Harbourâs speech, this is still a show ABOUT OUTCASTS FOR OUTCASTS.
Storytelling and Screenwriting 101âs
Iâm taking a free screenwriting course (would be my dream to actually make it a profession) so I like to think I can share some insights about literally the most basics lessons, some of the first lessons you learn about storytelling through screenwriting.
One: show donât tell. Storytelling in plays are very distinct and different from storytelling in film. Play storytelling is much more in your face, with dialogue being the main driver of plot, conveying emotions, and revealing motivations. Play dialogue and storytelling is complete within itself. Film storytelling is subtle, under layers of subtext, and (good) film dialogue is incomplete, speculative. Film dialogue vs. Play dialogue is literally the concept of show, donât tell. Have you noticed how since 5x06, the storytelling has become much more tell, not show, much more in our faces and overproduced. And donât even get me started about that epilogue. The lighting is identical to the lighting they use in Henryâs world (Creel House in the 60s). The staging? Take a look at the scene of El âsacrificing herselfâ and the Upside Down disappears behind the gate. It literally looks like a stage, even with stage floor lights. Thereâs the âwhole play within a playâ and The First Shadow lore we havenât even really explored in the show. The rooftop scene with Nancy, Steve, Jonathan, and Robin (where the hell is Vickie btw) is also completely staged like a theatrical scene. Everything in the epilogue for that matter is staged so similarly to a stage play and everything, I mean everything, is overproduced and in our faces. There is no subtlety. The costuming is off and there are so many period inconsistencies. Playgate confirmed.
WSQK nugget: âWho put that in my script? Vance (Vecna), was that you?â
Two: the key to a good ending in storytelling: it has to be shocking, and it has to feel inevitable when people look back. I mean, câmon, this is just Byler. They will drop the Byler bomb and to a casual viewer, general audience, second-screen viewer, it would be like, âWoah, wait, what?!â And it literally just takes a montage of all the moments leading up to it to recontextualize it or a re-watch of just truly paying attention and looking out for it to be like, âOHHHH I canât unsee it, now!â
The Duffers are ten years into their careers of being established writers/creators of the biggest show in the world. They would know two of most basic and 101âs of storytelling and they havenât done either! Yet! Because there is something insane still on its way. I mean, seriously, when they reveal Playgate, that will actually be so groundbreaking and bends the rules of film storytelling and unreliable narrators like I have never seen before.
So why did they decide to story tell in such a way?
WSQK referring to the Stranger Things fans (real fans) / Byler community as Hawkins
Weâre in the endgame, now.
WSQK makes a point to refer to the town of Hawkins in such a way it is like its addressing us, the true fans (Byler or not, even though it is endgame in the real finale), fans that care truly and deeply about these characters, about the message of uplifting the outcasts, but especially about this goddamn story.
If Playgate is real, all of us are literally made to feel like we went crazy together. We were all expecting something more and were greatly disappointed in the âfinale.â What is the message: I guess the power of trauma and teamwork??? They donât make a point of friendship or love defeating Vecna & the Mind Flayer. All they show is a montage of everyoneâs past traumas as they each take a blow at Vecna (as we were just meant to sympathize with his backstory), which, I donât know about you, but thatâs not something that particularly unleashes my powers or uplifts me quite like the power of love.
With this disappointing finale, it brought parts of the community together that would otherwise likely not be open to respectful discussion. When the finale released, we had anti-Bylers in the Byler subreddit, apologizing and sympathezing with us on the Duffersâ behalf for their queerbait. There was a unity in the fact that we all wanted something more. That that couldnât possibly be it, right? Uniting the fandom to ALL want a better ending to this story. Iâm talking about true fans btw. I know certain casuals, general audience, second-screen viewers are claiming it was âthe perfect endingâ but to them I say, âRespectfully, you donât know your elbow from your goddamn asshole when it comes to good storytelling.â And, sure, it was very cinematic, the battle was very cool! You could even say almost everyone had their own moment and they had their closure (except for like, yâknow, our main characters from the beginning: Will, Mike, and El). It had its emotional scenes, sure, but you canât deny that at the same time, it felt overproduced, forced, disingenuous, fabricated, and most importantly: not our show anymore.
WSQK about Hawkins as the fandom (Byler nation, rise!) communities:
âThis town knows how to come together and thatâs what youâre all doing right now. Hawkins, be kind, rewind.â
âThe community of Hawkins is what makes us proud. Why would you want to live anywhere else?â
Can I just say, this town is the best town in all of America! (this is giving Byler nation ngl lol) This town is special, it has this infectious energy, the community spirit is always there, just these bonds of friendship everywhere you look :â). Stick with us for as long as you can (!!!).â
âWe are asking residents to check in on their neighbours after last nightâs New Yearâs celebrations.â
âHawkins high marching band is making the rounds around the neighbourhood. RightâŚbecause thatâll make all those soreheads so much betterâŚthe marching band says their aim is to lift spirits and bring our community closer together. Letâs see if they can actually play in time together, shall we?â
âPower company is saying repairs are under way, though they have given no explanation for the outages (Duffers). Some locals say the outages follow a pattern (queerbait), while others say itâs just dodgy (meaning dishonest and unreliable) and just bad luck (itâs just a case of âin over their headsâ. But in true Hawkins style, the community is coming together to support each other.â
âThe majority of Hawkins will be carrying on with their usual and every day lives (GA, casuals, second-screen viewers).
Pacing and Slow Burn â Why is this so important?
What we saw in volume two and what it could mean for the show:
Firstly, I just want to start off by saying, that the Jancy scene is symbolic of being dishonest = impending doom gets worse and worse. Being true (to ourselves) is what will save us. You can read more here: The Ultimate Volume Two Analysis of All Analyses Supercut of All Supercuts Elaganza Extravaganza in Support of Byler : r/byler
Throughout all of volume two, the dialogue about pacing and slow burn is so meta itâs crazy.
Lucas and Erica (Lucas = Bylers, Erica = Duffers or Lucas = fake finale) come up with plans simultaneously on how to jack back into the hive mind and find the others in the Upside Down. Lucas says his plan is âfaster, bolder, better.â He says, âyour plan is too slowâ, to which Erica replies, âyour plan is stupid.â And as they begin Lucasâ plan, Will tells Joyce to âtake it really slow.â
And indeed, Lucasâ plan ends up backfiring and almost gets Will killed and hurts the whole party. They also refer to it as a Frankenstein plan more than once. Perhaps a nod at chopping up footage and editing in such a way to pull off even more of a shocker in the end.
Dustin & Steve scenes (Dustin/Steve = Duffers/Bylers)
Dustin says, âtreasure is always buried in the deepest depths of the dungeon.â
Dustin: âI thought itâd be instantaneous, clearly not.â Steve: âWhy do you sound disappointed?â Dustin: âIâm not disappointed, Iâm confused.â Sounds like Byler nation, innit?
Dustin: âSteve, slow down! The higher we go, the more dangerous it gets.â Steve: âAll the more reason to speed up.â Stairwell proceeds to collapse and he almost falls to his death. Dustin: âAs I was saying.â
Slow and steady wins the race. Another one (read it as Murray = Byler doubt lol):
Clarke: âVoyager Beta, any signal yet?â Erica: âNegative, Voyager Gamma?â Murray: âA big, fat zero over here. Your balloon experiment is a dud (fake finale). Letâs just put an antenna on the van and drive (accelerate Byler already!).â Clarke: âAs Iâve said, given the uneven terrain and forested nature of Hawkins (ST fandom), a vehicle is not the most expedient way to pinpoint a telemetry tag.â
(Hm that sounds a lot like âwhen blue meets yellow in the west. Sounds nice if you tread lightly.â)
Dialogue contâd â Murray: âExpedient?! Weâve been building your goddamn balloon experiment for six hours!â Clarke: âYes, but once we trilaterate the three signals (Three waterfalls, anyone? Three more episodes, anyone?), Iâll be able to pinpoint the precise location.â Murray: âYou canât trilaterate shit if we canât get a signal, so letâs just cut our losses now before your star student (your central ship) winds up dead.â Clarke: âCut our lossesâŚ?! Fortune favours the bold (Duffers?). We need more height (more build up), loosen your balloons!â
Murray: âI take it all back! You mad, mad genius! (Duffers, again?)
Clarke: âThank you. Calculation incoming, hold tight!â (!!!)
Some more quickies:
Akers: âYou wanna tell me what else is going to pop out of this hellhole or should we leave it a surprise?â
Lucas: âErica and Mr. Clarke came through!â â the slower plan worked, the faster plan just ended up hurting Will.
Lucas: âWhat are the odds?â Erica (Bylers): âLow as shit but I say itâs about damn time we had some luck.â (how a lot of us felt after volume two)
Steve: âHow long do we think this takes?â Mike: âWe better hope we have some time. Because if this is all correct,â (certain Byler theories?), âwe have a lot to cover. (paraphrasing)â.
Erica: âWeâve secured the gate signal, repeat, the gate signal is secured.â (the Byler signal that will open the floodgates, perhaps?). Murray: âTell Snookums that his timing is *mwah*! Because Santaâs sleigh is almost ready!â
Dustin: âFor the record, a Rubikâs cube (a fast paced, easy to follow, predictable fake finale) isnât even a good measure of intelligence. But your beanstalk plan (completely throwing off our entire audience because they are also under Vecnaâs spell for volume two and three), seriously, only a genius could come up with that.â Steve: âI learned from the best.â âIf it fails, we both go down.â
I feel like a lot of the dialogue between Dustin and Steve mimics how the Duffers may have butted heads trying to close out s5 and tie up the whole show. For example, Ross wants to throw everything (Byler signals) at us with no pacing because thereâs so much evidence and itâs the final season. Matt: âno, no, no, let it pay off at the very bitter end, I promise it will pay off, it might even be genius.â Ross: âwoah youâre right, this could be genius.â Lol a girl can dream. Letâs hope they are actually geniuses and pull this shit off!
âItâs a risk that we gotta take. We fly or we die.â âThen I guess we die.â âNo, no, weâre not gonna die if we commit to the plan.â (5x07)
FINALLY: Two Darts
Joyce says in 5x05 - our last episode of reliable storytelling, mind you â âSo we try both. We throw two dart and pray for a bullseye.â At first, I thought the two darts meant how volume one vs. volume two played out. Volume one was littered with Byler nuggets and Will had so much hope (and we had so much hope) that Mike was on the same page from all of the signalling. Then in volume two, we get basically no Byler content at all after 5x05 and we lose all hope just as Will does. And the finale is just garbage that means nothing to the story.
Now I think it is so much more than that.
Why throw two darts?
On one hand, you can go for a fast-paced (too-fast paced) crowd-pleasing spectacle of action and predictability, keep it simple. Let it be fun, but donât make any waves. Keep your heads down, follow the rules, blend in. Be a little dodgy if they start asking âbut what about?â Itâs glossy, itâs glitz, itâs safe (but the âmajorityâ will like it), itâsâŚnot our show anymore.
or
You can take a risk. Slow burn. Walk, donât run. Slow and steady. Fly or die, âweâll go down together.â Stick to the original recipe. Be vigilant. BUT. Stay true to ourselves, our friends, stand up for whatâs right, no matter the cost. Itâs risky, but when have we ever played it safe? Provoke them, draw attention, âresistance is necessary.â Itâs our show.
So you were disappointed in the finale? â itâs not just us Bylers. Itâs everyone who cares deeply and truly for these characters and this story. By doing this, it opens up a dialogue. Uniting the fandom (more than just Bylers) to ALL want a better version of an ending for this show and these characters weâve been with for a decade! Â What version sounds better to you? It means giving the versions to people that never gave Byler a chance and gave them the ending that they think they wanted, only for them to be wildly disappointed. It means making GA root for a queer love story saving the day because itâs the better story. It begs for respectful (hopefully) discussion of which ending is better and it asks is it really so bad just because itâs a queer ship when itâs all led up to this. Itâs show, donât tell. Itâs shocking, yet inevitable. And if it takes making us feel like weâre going crazy together, then so be it!
Stranger Things Finale and Byler
None of us are wrong. The Duffer Brothers, Shawn Levy, Netflix are wrong. This was the most elaborate queerbait in media history (My video). They are ones who embarrassed themselves and should be ashamed.
Instead of having Mike's behavior in seasons 3 and 4 be explained by internalized homophobia and a powerful, touching slow-burn childhood-friends-to-lovers queer romance, they decided to make canon Mike being an inconsistent, poorly-written ASSHOLE who was a terrible friend and terrible boyfriend for no reason. And they decided to feature Mileven, an awful model of a "healthy" relationship taped together by Will's love, as the show's "main romance," after all.
In an interview, the Duffer Brothers had the audacity to compare Will's love for Mike to unrequited "crushes" they had growing up. They required "realism" for the long-suffering gay boy who sadly said he was "never gonna fall in love." If this show is about "realism," then why did they make Mike a hetero male self-insert fantasy of a nerdy boy finding a superpowered girlfriend who you can satisfy simply by saying "I Love You" despite treating her like shit? El's line saying Mike has always "understood" and "seen" her, when he completely did NOT understand her, gaslit her, and made her feel like a monster in Season 4, was a travesty. He didn't even say "I love you" when she said she loved him before she died!
Why does Max get to have a boyfriend whose love saves her from Vecna? Why is there no sign that Robin is dating Vickie -- or any girl for that matter -- in the epilogue? (They even made Robin present as more femme as well! And in this scene, while we hear about all the other characters' lives, we don't hear about Robin's -- god forbid that it's gay!) Will never even got to fuckin KISS his epilogue date. Duffers: why do only straight people find love in your show? And why did you present us as "safe" and palatable for straight people? Why did you have Will ultimately assume his love was unrequited in advance, when you DID show hints Mike likes Will back and even had Will have a look of recognition when Robin talked about shared looks and bumps of the elbow? Why, after Will made clear he had a crush on Mike, NOT have them hug when Mike said they were best friends? Was it because that would've been too icky for homophobic viewers? Why did Will only plead with Vecna instead of use his powers to kick his fuckin ass? What's "gay empowerment" if Will doesn't ACT on being gay and doesn't use his POWER?
They absolutely built up hope that Byler would happen with how they wrote Mike, El, and Will's relationships, including first and foremost the Cyrano Trope where they had Mike fall in love with WILL'S painting and WILL'S feelings thinking they came from El. (Now that we know the end, they literally let a gay boy's sacrifice and love be what tapes together a straight couple.) And the mountain of other clues and how Mike clearly viewed Will differently -- "It's Hawkins, it's not the same without you." They planted easter eggs even into the last season -- having Ted smash down Mike's closet door, the gay sexual references, the blue and yellow swings -- that they knew Byler fans would catch on to. And all this time the creators never clarified that Byler wouldn't happen, in order to keep queer people watching. In my last video I asked: "With every choice you made, were you in fact LAUGHING at the LGBT+ people you were giving hope to? And opening up to ridicule?" They apparently DID. This was needless and cruel.
And still, Byler lives in subtext. All the evidence is that Mike has more-than-friend feelings for Will, and is grieving over the loss of his first love. And El's imagined happy ending did not include a romantic future with Mike.
And, after seeing comments, I rewatched Mike putting his D&D book next to Will's. Mike stares at Will's D&D book which takes up half the frame, and breaks down when placing his own book next to it. It was a nod to Byler. The Duffers never explicitly ruled out Mike having romantic feelings for Will in canon, and Will's painting is on his wall. It was cowardly, but Byler lives on in subtext.
BYLER IS REAL. It ABSOLUTELY is there. They just didn't make it canon. But they stoked in US a hope and fire that will not burn out. I'm sure there will be many MORE amazing fanfics that come out of this beautiful relationship that was prepared but not made canon.
It's my opinion -- and this likely might never be confirmed in a public statement, and might even be contradicted by the Duffers -- that the Duffers were preparing for Byler at the time Season 4 ended. There's just too much evidence for it to have been otherwise. And that at some point they chickened out: some internal power struggle occurred (with Netflix? with the Duffers future employer Paramount?), and the consolation prize is the subtextual ending we got.
They absolutely knew we exist and who we are, when they played David Bowie's "Heroes" during the credits. A song about forbidden love that society looks down on, which they didn't have the courage to actually portray. They gave lip-service to heroism, but weren't heroic themselves. Money walks and talks, and the Duffers SOLD OUT.
But no network corporate execs or the Duffer Brothers have the right or the ABILITY to dictate what WE do.
We will continue to live the lives we were destined to live, fictional shows be damned. If we can survive the dark ages of the 1980s, we can survive now. If Byler were canon, it would have been a fictional story after all. What would have mattered is what we'd have done with it after. BYLER LIVES: we'll create fanfics, we'll fight for the millions of Mikes and Wills out there to be themselves and find love. As far as I'm concerned, Will's moment at the end of Sorcerer is the canon conclusion of his coming-out arc -- not pleading for acceptance, but asserting his RIGHT TO LOVE. THAT is the fierceness of OUR COMMUNITY who has managed to fight and win the progress we have. We didn't need a Stranger Things when we rioted at Stonewall. We don't need a show to raise our fists and live OUR lives the way WE want to and WILL.
Take care of yourselves, everyone! And you are RIGHT to be angry!
