She always slept in the fetal position. Rain or shine, snow or hale. It was the easiest way to rise to a stand when the enemy was upon you.
And Zero had many, many enemies. One of them in fact, now sleeping near her almost every night, or excusing herself when she did not sleep first, legs lacing instead with a manās to satiate an empty pleasure. Yes, the Intoner Four, a sweetly smiling girl-child who hid a twisted nature enough to rival Ditoās.Ā
Perhaps she was desperate. The Branches were collapsing no matter how hard she tried. The stupid dragon died too many times for her to bear. One knew but could not act true to her ābeliefsā out of her personal hatred. Her āace in the holeā had bested her when sheād allowed herself a dying moment of mourning.Ā
So when this anomaly, much reminiscent to Threeās attempts in the twisted forest, had approached her, she couldnāt think of an easier means. The sister-worshipping Four, forever pining for a family that did not exist ā for a sister who had never protected her in the first place. Who knew nothing but followed because she believed their cause to be ājustā.Ā
The last month like clockwork sheās been waking to a keening voice, nearly chirped in both annoyance and an overall perkiness that drives little holes in her eardrums.
And each time, in faithfulness, Zero turns on her exposed hip and curls her mouth unhappily, voice never quite asleep.Ā
(If she betrays me before we get to One, Iāll kill her. Itās easy regardless, sheās in my sights at all times, and she knows that. Sheās not stupid enough not to know that. If she goes out of control before we go to One, I kill her. Either way, either scenario⦠I kill her. )
āShut up already, Iām getting up..āĀ
( And like clockwork, she answers the keening call each time.)
Fourās voice rouses her from her stationary form, and without bothering to check her hair, smooth out her clothes, the first, and soon to beĀ lastĀ Intoner rises with the natural confidence of a woman unfaltering.Ā
"Huh. So itās that close now, is it? Gotta admit itās prettyĀ usefulĀ that you know all that. Makes my job a bit easier. I didnāt expect you to be able to stomach this much.āĀ
The oldest mused, rousing the rest of their little party before turning to face the fourth, single roseate eye slanting.Ā
āThis is it. Itāll be over soon.āĀ
Zero said quietly, voice not losing her natural sharpness she held as a guard against the world, but there was something weary in her voice, something that slipped between syllables as she locked eyes with one of her creations. Soon they both would be dead.
āYou know the plan ā you sure you can kill your dear big sister? The one you hero-worshipped so much?ā
Her answer depended on whether Zero killed her now or later.
