Alec let the still trembling, massive dog hide behind him, kept a protective stance in front of her. His voice was soft although the words were hard as steel. “No one on this team is allowed to give up on her. Understood? We’re not the kind of people who give up on someone because they’re difficult.” If the words were aimed at a certain someone… No one would ever have to know.

Magnus started to giggle good naturedly, and Alec found himself joining it. He stopped abruptly and looked away upon hearing his parents. By the time he turned his gaze back Magnus was gone. Alec thought that the other was a trick of his imagination until they met again two days later. /

Emotions boil over in the aftermath of an awful crash. Tragedies can’t be avoided.

Against his will Alec glanced towards where Magnus laughed with one of the other dancers. As beautiful and distant as a star. Imagining that you know someone and actually knowing them are two different things. “I don’t.”

It was always the same old story. Magnus messed up and fate took another person from him. He hadn’t found the love he craved for because he didn’t deserve it. He never would. How many good people would have to be taken from the world before he’d learn his lesson? Magnus decided that he was done with lessons from fate.

Alec’s jawline tightened. “I’m used to things I can’t get out of my head.” He kept his voice so low that only Magnus heard him. “I’m sick of not getting people out of my heart.”

The apology in the doctor’s eyes slammed all air from his lungs. “We did everything we could but his injuries… They were too extensive.”

“I’ll dance with you. That’s what I signed up for.” Alec’s voice was tight from the storm he held back. “But I won’t deal with this pretend game. I refuse to pretend that you didn't shatter my heart.”

She sighed. “I’m so sorry, Magnus. But he’s gone.”

Two awful secrets of Alec’s come to light dramatically. Magnus offers his help. Things culminate to another stressful race.

Magnus groaned and flopped elegantly on his couch, not spilling even a drop of his stiff drink. The red thread around his wrist, invisible to others and true mockery from fate, burned like acid. “If even the person I’m destined to be with doesn’t want me… Then what’s the point in trying? I believe that I’m finally out of fool’s hope.”

Robert couldn’t say anything to that, and the silence was deafening. For a while. “What he did… Is that why you can’t desire women? Why you’re still in the middle of that endless phase where you…?”

They were locked into a heated staring contest, during which adrenaline and electricity crackled between them so intensely that it was difficult to breathe. Eventually Alec’s spiraling mind couldn’t handle the silence and stillness any longer. “What are you ogling at me for? Don’t you want to punish me for disappointing you? Slap me, yell at me, laugh at me. Just get it over with! Just…!”

Jace, Izzy and Robert all had their opinions. Once again no one appeared to be interested in Alec’s opinion.

It was quite possibly a mistake. But how was Alec supposed to refuse? Ignoring the voice in his head hissing how disgusting the deed was, he pressed his lips against Magnus’.

Magnus’ jaw tightened enough for it to make a sound. “I’m not going to look away when you bring harm on yourself. I don’t care how many others have.”
