I started this project June 19th when Fusion came to my doors and asked if I wanted to collaborate with him on a cover he was planning to make. I hopped on immediately as soon as I knew the timestamp. Originally Fusion had just wanted me to draw some pngs BUT I got a little too excited and jumped to the idea of a fully edited animation and created the first storyboard😭

Originally I was going to have dream cuphead throughout the entire first segment. He would fall back and then sh##t himself. This idea was scrapped though when Fusion shared His storyboard which I adapted into the rest of my own ideas. Unfortunately I can only add one video, but I might post the refined storyboard after this post since this is my behind the scenes account 🙏

After the storyboard was completed I started outlining my scenes which I started before fusion even sent me his first take on the cover, I had to be on top of things okay…. This did mean that I could not work on some parts of the storyboard since Fusion had mentioned he wanted to change some lyrics. So only after he gave me his first take was I able to fill in those gaps. Which were the scenes where Boris holds the gun, until the scene with the walk cycle at the end. Though once I had everything figured out and had everything outlined and colored I could finally move onto animating.

And when I tell you this project had 396 pieces I am not lying. This is probably the second biggest project or it might even be THE biggest project I’ve worked on by far. And the animating/editing process was actually not that taxing. I already had the vision all laid out in my head the only thing I had to do was lay it all out. This process overall probably took 1 week or 2. It probably would have taken me longer but again. I wanted to be on top of the project and throughout the time I was waiting for Fusions first take I would go in and animate the scenes I had colored.

Once I had all the animation complete with lighting and everything I went back in to make final touches. I will admit here I did share my process with my close friends…. And it’s thanks to their feedback that I can confidently say I am PROUD of what I created. Denny gave me the idea to add glitches to the project actually. Thank you Denny🫶

Finally I made some thumbnails for Fusion to choose from and that’s it! The project was finally done and I am so relieved!😋

The best part of this entire process is THE SUPPORT. Not only was Fusion and my friends one of the reasons I kept hammering this project. But the feedback I got at the end of it made it feel so so worth it. I started this project on the first few weeks of my vacation when I was feeling really homesick and just down on my luck, but getting to work on this project, call with my friends throughout it, and receive everyone’s overwhelmingly loving comments at the end of it definitely helped me feel way better about it all! I can enjoy my last few days of my vacation with ease and can’t wait to get home🩷

Sketch boards I did throughout this week! Featuring some OCS, friend requests, drawings from @myth-of-the-machine as well as Pearline from @oyster-bar-au

Firstly, HELLO, SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED MY WORK😋 hopefully what I say here makes sense, I’ve never done this before😭

What I do when I’m drawing MOTM characters is I completely lean into the emotions, Curved lines, circles, and take heavy inspo from old cartoon character drawings such as the Jessica rabbit one you see down there.

By redrawing scenes from MOTM or just drawings I come across, I become more and more familiar with the style. Which usually consists of curved lines and circles. I try to mix Fly and Norts artsyles together so I’ll go with more sketchier and sharp lines when drawing more emotional scenes like the cupheads dream redraw I did down there. If there isn’t a serious emotion then I’ll go for my usual curved lines. Like the bendy sketch I did there. Really my tip for emotions/expressions is just to over exaggerate till your message is across! At the end of the day these Are cartoon characters. I like looking at the Cuphead Shows expressions they’re really fun to take inspo from!

Another tip I have that helps me a lot is Drawing a toon character before drawing them in the MOTM style. Drawing or having a toon character such as my Dale Dale reference sheet down there, helps me convert it into the MOTM style because most MOTM characters Were just smaller toons turned into what they are in the comic which is more humanoid.

Find their staple features and exaggerate them. This can be eyebrows, mouths, head shapes, lips, so on and so on. Anything that identifies and separates the character from the rest. we haven’t seen many human characters so it’s pretty hard to make up anything, but looking up cartoon human characters on sites like Pinterest or by other artists can inspire you! What I did when drawing Jessica rabbit.

I will also say drawing on paper does help me personally when I was learning how to draw in a more cartoonish artstyle!

That’s about all I have and can think of, so I hope that gave some insight😔 I’ve spent a lot of more free time sketching these characters, but I know it was pretty tricky in the beginning to get used to the rubber hose style that most of these characters have. I practiced a lot with bendy because of how simple his design is and really, Practice makes perfect and so long as you’re happy with what you made that’s all that really matters!
