i actually have written a lot of deoncerlised fanfiction bcos i used to like to use whatever fandom I was into as a springboard for coming up w AU settings and then often would get to a point where i was like 'this is its own thing' and just write it as such. however this tendency kind of ran aground for me around 2014 bcos it just doesn't work very well with dr who.

the issue i ran into with dr who is that while it's a great fandom for coming up with original SFF concepts, dr who stories often hinge on the main character(s) being impartial newcomers? in a way that's difficult to justify in an original work.

essentially bbc merlin was great for this bcos the characters are generic enough that you can get away with it. 'these are my main characters, Guy A who is stuck up and rude but with a heart of gold, Guy B who thinks Guy A is the worst but secretly has a crush on him, Girl A who is nice and sweet and Girl B who doesn't take any shit'. that could be basically anyone. with, say, back to the future you have the issue that the core dynamic is uhh VERY specific.

after a while i started making them into f/f stories just to keep people guessing. showed one to a friend once and was like 'did you like that' and she was like ya and i was like 'bbc merlin' and she was like FUCK

What they don't tell you is that you die for real, and that you only come back if you Come Back Wrong. Also that your soul is tethered to the Ballpit, and it hates the husk you have become and will kill you on sight, so you can never go back to Dash Con again. Le Sigh!
