“You’re not supposed to see me like this” Sam said as he sobbed, he really didn’t mean for his sister to see him crying, but he couldn’t really put a timing on these things. “It’s something silly, I’m not like, hurt or anything, don’t worry” He assured her, wiping off his tears “I was just watching this documental and it fucked me up, but you know how it is, it’s just… frustrating, everything I do will never be enough so… yeah, it’s just… fucked up”

Sam liked Rissa, he knew that, it was impossible not to like them because they were not only smoking hot but they were also bright and funny and well, Sam was really into it. And Sam was also a fool, hence why when Rissa kissed his cheek, he simply moved his face and ended up kissing their lips. “Ah shit, sorry, you’re seeing someone, I shouldn’t have done that” He replied, immediately covering his mouth. “We’re just chilling, I can chill without acting like a jerk, I promise”

“No fucking way” Sam said excited when Chris pointed at a large group of people who seemed to be protecting a young girl. “Oh my fucking God, that’s Greta, isn’t she? You’re taller than me, are you really telling me that you saw her? Oh fuck, Chris, shit, what do I do? She’s my idol, I’m freaking out, I’m totally freaking out, I’m going nuts, oh fuck, do you think we can approach her? What do I tell her? Do I look like a loser?” He didn’t want to impress a sixteen year old with his looks, his admiration was for other reasons, but he didn’t want to look like a mess in front of her either.

“Yeah, I know,” Chris spoke all nonchalantly before scrunching his nose. “Okay, see, gross. Now you’re getting too sentimental. All I said was carbon footprint. Calm down over there, Hannah Kahnwald.” He couldn’t help smirking, rolling his shoulder to make it pop. Trying to get out of work and classes for a few days made him nervous. But unlike his brother, he knew when to have a little fun too. Plus, he knew it would mean a lot to Sam. “It’s fine. I’ll let them know I’m thinking about it tomorrow, as a heads up. And I’ll email teachers. Then, I’ll call your work and your sister and tell them that you’ve been kidnapped. All problems: solved.” Except maybe the cost of getting to New York because Chris had no idea how expensive it would be after everything was said and done. But it’d be worth it. “Once we get back, we can plan a different road trip.”

“Stop being disgusted by my love you’re breaking my heart” Sam joked since he was great at being sentimental whenever he wanted to be. “Oh God stop, now you’re mentioning Hannah and I love her psycho self, like, if I’m supposed to be offended I’m not” He figured he should let him know because he was kind of obsessed with Dark now. “Don’t tell Lara, oh my God, she’s going to freak out and ruin the trip for us, or call her when we are already on our way so she can’t stop us” He loved Lara but she would probably start asking if he can really skip work or if he should be really doing these things and well, he wouldn’t like the answers. “Or just a brand new trip in a better time, I’m open to that too”

“The cheapest option is almost always the best option. I’ve looked up Amtrak before out of curiosity. It’s still kind of expensive and it’ll take longer, but I’m sure it’s cheaper than driving in the long run. And less of a carbon footprint.” Okay, he wasn’t 100% certain on that last point but if Sam was leaning that way, it probably was. “When are we going? Do you know dates?” Chris was a bit worried about work, and school, depending on how soon this was happening. Though, he was sure he could get like a week off and it’d be fine.

“See why you’re my best friend in the entire world? You’re even saying carbon footprint, man, I love you” He got cheesy in that moment but damn, Chris was definitely the best because he could easily dismiss everything Sam said but no, he was here, supporting him and even encouraging him to be whoever he wanted to be. “I think it’s in the middle of September, do you think you can skip work for a few days? If you can’t, then I’m sure we can plan something else, I mean, let’s be realistic, I won’t get to actually meet her or anything” So yeah, maybe this trip could be changed for something else like Chris had suggested earlier.

Since she didn’t really know what to say to that, Clara simply nodded, because yeah, she agreed on that, but she also knew that repeating about how she didn’t trust anyone and hated the world would only make her seem desperate—and desperate she was not. “You know there’s drug-laced candies, right? Or maybe you don’t… it’s not like guys have to worry about being roofied at parties. Anyway… just be careful. You never know when a stranger might show up and lure you to a van.” Clara smirked, winking at him to give him the illusion that she was that stranger that would lure him. Little did he know how harmless she actually was. “Is that the lady you were trying to help?” She asked, motioning her head towards and woman who was sitting not too far from them, looking to the sides a little nervous.

“I wasn’t serious, come no, I’m not twelve” He laughed, entertained at the way she seemed to worry about his completely lack of knowledge of self preservation or something. “You’re right, I’m not really worried even when it can happen, but you know, you girls have it much worse. I make sure to always take care of every girl around me at parties” And well, in general, he liked to think he did a good job protecting the women around him from sick bastards. “You got a van around?” He asked with another laughter, nodding along. “Yeah, but what if she’s using her dog to lure me in? You made me doubt”

It wasn’t always that Lara could actually sit back and relax with her younger brother, so whenever she had the opportunity, she would definitely take advantage of it and enjoy every single moment in his company. The video wasn’t too long, nor too short–the perfect amount of time for a TED Talk, even though it was a speech at the UN. “She’s very eloquent talking. Definitely entertaining to hear her speak. Sadly, she’s going to need some of the bureaucracy if she wants actual changes. Lobbying in Washington might actually help, so she’s going to need more than good words to make that happen.” Lobbying took a lot of time, a lot of reading and analyzing numbers, but it was a good way regular people could make change happen. “Just don’t get arrested while you’re there, please?” Lara teased, but deep down, it was a serious request. “How’s Chris doing? I haven’t seen him in a while. Keeping your ass out of trouble, I hope?”

“She doesn’t want to make the laws or negotiate with anyone, she just wants for the world to see that the ones responsible for change are not doing anything, so they start doing things, you know?” She was just sixteen, and Sam was sure that her intention was to make this movement global, make it so big that politicians all around the world would have to take action.  “Come on, it was just one time and I wasn’t really arrested” He felt the need to point out, smiling. “My brother from another mother is doing great, you know, still being my awesome brain’s half. And excuse you, I’m the one who keeps him out of trouble, you make it sound like he’s the good influence in my life when it’s the opposite” He was lying and everyone knew it,  but, oh well.

“We can do that. Let’s make it happen.” Chris could tell this was important to Sam and something he really wanted to do, so the least Chris could do was offer to help him find a way. Plus, New York and roadtripping sounded amazing anyway. Even if it meant driving across the country. Apparently. “…good. I’ll keep my title that’s at least half accurate. I guess I could see about borrowing my dad’s car? Or taking a train. I don’t know. A train would be better, right?” It might be cheaper too, considering they would at the very least have to stop and get gas if driving, maybe a hotel too because driving that far wasn’t happening in one day. “Okay, okay. But we can do another roadtrip later. That’s all I’m saying.”

Sam was getting excited and at the same time, he was very grateful by the fact that his best friend was supporting his crazy ideas even if he was just rambling and not giving much information. “I think a train would be better, it could be more like an adventure, we could stop in a few places, driving could be too tiring and expensive and unless you’ve won the lottery lately then I think we should go for the cheapest option” Sam remarked, smiling. “We can do everything together, my friends, the sky is the limit for uuuuuus”

“I don’t trust anyone.” Clara replied easily. She knew she didn’t owe anyone explanations, but it was just how she’d been built—with a sharp tongue and an attitude difficult to handle apparently. She looked at him. An apparently-sweet white boy like would be such a treat in her neighborhood it was almost sad in a way that made a small smile appear on her lips because she didn’t even know how that would feel like. The sweet innocence she wanted her sister to have for many years to come. “Dude–that’s how you get thrown into the back of a van, you know?”

“That’s a good call, saves you a lot of disappointments” Sam agreed, although he wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or not. He liked trusting people, but it was mostly because he had great people around him. “Nah, I mean, yes, totally, that’s how kids get thrown into a van, but I like to think I’m smarter than that, you’d have to at least offer me something more than just a candy to get in a car with a stranger”

“That is very hard.” Even Lara felt nervous in front of big audiences during important trials, so she could understand. Granted, she would never be able to relate with someone that had Asperger, but she could only imagine how even harder it was. “Come here. Watch it with me.” She waved him over to her couch, moving one arm around him and snuggling up to her little brother, before pressing play. The speech was very powerful indeed and it made her even angrier at commander in chiefs that couldn’t care less about the environment. “This girl is going to make an incredible politician someday. Or even an environmental lawyer! Are you thinking of joining her in New York?”

Sam jumped to the couch and snuggled against his sister because no matter how much he complained, he would always be a sucker for Lara’s affection. He liked to be able to show this video to Lara, in his opinion, everyone should be more aware of what was going on. They all needed to start taking action. “I don’t think she’s interested in that, like, sure, the way to change the way we live is through our law and government but I feel like she won’t like all the bureaucracy”  But he didn’t know Greta so he wouldn’t know. “Plus, she quit school to do this, so maybe entering college is not her priority” After all, why study for a future that won’t exist? “I want to, I’m going to ask Chris to go with me, it could be our next adventure”

“Um. I’ll be honest. It depends on what part of that you’d consider fun. Because I could pass on the politics. Roadtrip part, definitely. If you’re calling me a dork though, what does that make you? Unless you’re trying to say you have another best friend. Drop their name, I’ll solve the problem.” Chris jabbed a finger in Sam’s direction. “As much as I want to just say yes to that, wouldn’t flying be, I don’t know, possibly cheaper and easier? Plus, driving across the country would take a few days. Which takes away from the number of days we could be in New York. You feel me?” There were only so many days they could both get away with asking off from work. “We could plan a smaller roadtrip some other time. We could go to Colorado or something. Go explore the mountains. Try snowboarding. Huh? Huh??” Chris nudged him.

“I want to attend one of her events, like, listen to her live you know? I don’t care about anyone else so maybe we can skip that part as long as we get to one of her events” He should really start googling and see how factible everything is, because maybe even if they went to NY chances were they wouldn’t get to see her at all. “Nah, you’re the dork I’m talking about, no one’s stealing your place as the dorkest of all” He assured him. “Yes, flying would be cheaper to us, but the carbon footprint would be terrible. I guess it makes you question what’s more important to you, to save money or to save the world” He raised an eyebrow at him because the choice was obvious to him “We could take trains”  He sighed, frustrated. “But roadtrips don’t involve meeting my idol!”

Chris stared at Sam as he explained again, nodding along. There were too many names and people to keep them all straight in his head but the more Sam went on, the more familiar Chris started to feel with this one. Sam had definitely brought her up before. A few times. “Okay? I mean, yeah. It’s worth a shot. I’m not really sure how these conferences work but I’d bet you could still get like, fairly close?” Chris smiled. “I see what you’re trying to do here. You want me to call myself a dork. But whatever because this dork would so be down with going to New York if you’re serious. We’d get you there, one way or another.” Nope, Chris wasn’t going to plead Sam to take him with. No, nu huh. But going to New York would be fun. Surely. Especially being them.

“I have no idea but there will be tons of security because politicians will attend and yeah, I don’t even know when it’s going to happen but it could be fun, right? A good excuse for a roadtrip with my dork best friend” He winked at Chris because honestly, he was excited about possibly meeting Greta but the thought of a roadtrip with Chris was also making him super excited. “But you are a dork, what would be the surprise on you calling yourself one?” He asked with another laughter. “I’m totally serious, or well, as serious as I can be while talking to you, we could plan this, we have time, we just need a car and some money and... well, it will be our own adventure!”

Clara chuckled when that guy approached her and it was weird that he’d mentioned he was not allowed to have pets. Kind of like a child telling someone their mom didn’t let them have pets. But then again, he might still live with his parents—Clara still lived with her mom. “He really can. No offense, but I don’t trust you so if you want we can return him to his owner together?”

“Why wouldn’t you trust me?” Sam totally knew why, he was a stranger, but still, he had always thought he looked like the friendly neighbor, and the lady was literally close waiting for her dog. He ended up shrugging and chuckling. “Sure, we can, if we are lucky the old lady might give us a candy or something, not like I would accept candies from strangers but still, it would be a nice gesture, I like candy”

As Sam went on about this girl he was in full admiration more for, she couldn’t help but smile, because it was always nice to hear him talk about something he was passionate about, especially since she was too, worried about the environment, but sadly, she’d never heard of this teenager his brother was so smitten over. “That’s actually impressive… and you know… these new generations seem to be doing way more for the environment than my generation, so props to her.” She smiled. “Yeah, show me one of her speeches.”

“She’s literally my idol. She also has Asperger, which makes her even more amazing because she hates crowds yet look at her, in front of everyone, starting a worldwide social movement” Sam really admired her, and it had been so long since he found someone who was worth admiring. He was tired of being disappointed by the world in general, specially his country and its government, so this was actually giving him hope. “This one she gave at the UN, it gives me chills”

“A school—strike?” Lara furrowed her brows. “You can take trains–plural–until you get to New York, but I’m sure that would cost you three times more. “What is so special about her anyway? I mean, I’m all for women protesting, but… what is she protesting about?”

“She started an international movement, students all over the world are demanding their governments to take charge of the environmental crisis, she’s amazing Lara, she’s so fucking cool” Sam sighed, his admiration for Greta had no limits now. “It would cost me more but it would cost our planet much less, really, we need to start worrying about our carbon footprint” He assured her, smiling. “She’s finally voicing all of our concerns, how people deciding for our planet are not the ones who are going to be alive in three decades, how they’re not leaving anything for us and the next generation, you want to see a speech of her on Youtube?”
