Phil isn’t a heavy drinker. Alcohol is too strong and Phil’s always been more partial to the sweeter things in life. Right now, though, bitterness wells up in his throat and bursts out onto his tongue whenever he glances down at his left hand, whenever he sees the faded tan line on his fourth finger where a promise ring once was. It’s a stark reminder that just a few hours earlier, he’d had a girlfriend. Now, he’s unsettlingly single.

The need to numb the pain brings him to some seedy pub in central london, the stench of alcohol thick in the air as he pushes himself up onto one of the barstools. He wants something strong, something that’ll burn his throat on the way down and leave a nasty aftertaste in his mouth, just like her kisses. He orders a few straight vodka shots and ignores the pitying look he gets from the bartender in return.
