Hi!  Welcome to my portfolio piece! I will briefly discuss who I am, what Iâve done to further my education, content Iâve produced whilst at SAE and allow you to accurately conclude what you can expect from me. 23, working since I was 13 years old. Hey, this is an extra-curricular blog. Iâll cover my proposed strategy for life after Animation School, should I not be good enough for immediate employment.
Iâm approximately 1/4 of the way through my degree at QANTM and the prospect of what Iâll do following my degree has been raised by internship lectures.
After many lecturers showing me work produced by students from other countries by the end of their degrees ⌠Iâm understanding I will possibly not be up to an industry skill level by completion, as this degree is fast tracked to 2 years and French degrees for example were 3 â 5 years.
So what will I do once I graduate if Iâm not good enough?
Thatâs been the consistent thought running through my head these past few weeks, as I lay ill in bed during flu season quietly dying.
Because of this I thought about other avenues of study, what could I study that was both complimentary to my Animation Bachelors, Interested me AND would go for a long enough time for me to appropriately hone my skills.
It might be an odd choice to most, but Philosophy appeared the answer to this. So I set about getting a foothold on the newly presented task.
Shortly upon beginning I found Edinburgh University was doing itâs twice yearly introduction to philosophy certification and decided to jump on board. Iâm 2nd week in and loving it, so far having covered the topics âWhat is Philosophy?â and âWhat is Knowledge? And do we really have any?â
The most useful of that which Iâve studied so far was perhaps the answer to âWhat is Philosophy?â
The claim was made âPhilosophy is the right way of thinkingâ. Science is a way of thinking and philosophy would be the act of taking a step back from that thinking and discerning whether it was the right way of thinking.
Medical Practitioners in the medieval ages believed in treating illness by balancing four humors, black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood. Itâs not until a person begins to call into question the effectiveness of such a method and begins asking questions, that the methods are changed, one steps back from the previous scientific framework of thinking and the act of practicing philosophy allows us to move forward in medicine.
From this one example however you can more easily discern philosophy as an act in thinking the right way.
After understanding this I was able to more clearly choose my sides in the point of contention over whether âPhilosophy is a pointless degree.â
Philosophy has never been a pointless degree â for the triumphs of philosophers past and the progression of philosophers moving forward, there will always be place in the workplace for one trained in the art of critical thinking, advanced reasoning and understanding how to come about the right way of thinking.
This post from New York Times:Â http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2010/08/19/x-phis-new-take-on-old-problems/where-the-smart-students-are
Was interesting, in it the question is brought about regarding the point of a Philosophy degree and much like my conclusion draws this.
Three main points: 1. Philosophy is the only discipline that really teaches critical thinking. 2. The current crisis of anxiety presented by capitalism only values the short term of courses and therefore does not consider the breadth of success those with philosophy degrees go on to have in the long term. 3. Philosophy students remain the highest performing on LSAT tests, assuming that smarts are valuable to leading a successful and happy life then a philosophy student would have it made.
Lastly Brian Leiter Professor of law states that âAfter nearly 20 years in law teaching, I can confirm that no one is smarter than the serious undergraduate philosophy major. Any school that cuts philosophy might as well put up a sign that says, âThe smart kids should apply elsewhere.'â

So it seems that my love for knowledge will \Â go unrequited, for even if there are no direct job prospects following a philosophy degree, I will have A) Honed my Skills in animation for employment and more importantly B) Honed my ability to reason.
On last note Iâll leave you with a charming interview with Bertrand Russell on the importance of philosophy.

#NowPlaying Informer by Snow
Hey, this is an extra-curricular blog. Iâll cover myself and the tools for success Iâve researched to work.
I grew up in Harlaxton and my mum had me when she was 16. With no father and surrounded by bad people my mum was scared for how Iâd turn out. She put me into Martial Arts at 7yrs old after I was bashed by a gang of kids at school. I trained there until I was 12 and went on to train in other styles, mostly Muay Thai for my teenage years.Â
The Martial Arts & Boxing taught me work ethic and discipline â the trainers back then would always remind us growing up that if we didnât work hard in the gym, weâd get our arses kicked in life. We trained three times per week, every Wednesday we had sparring & if you beat the other kid, but were a bit overconfident they would cut you down themselves or ban you from the gym. Some of you may have been sports people â you probably can understand what Iâm talking about better than others.
None of us had good home lives so we built role models out of people like Muhammad Ali & Kostya Tszyu â these guys were crucial to all of us â just to make us want to keep living. They gave us hope. If Muhammad hadnât worked as hard as he did, heâd still be a painter in Kentucky. Thatâs all I need to know to work as hard as he did.

Work Ethic:Â âThereâs no jobs man, I canât find work.â
There IS work, the problem is nobody knows you. Youâve gotta get crazy attention, youâve gotta be a maniac about what you do if you want to be known and get paid. You have to SHOW & BE valuable to a person or a company, they donât care about you, until you show them why ⌠youâve gotta be known for that man.
You canât fake your reputation for work on your instagram. You have to build your WORK ETHIC â itâs like a muscle ⌠it gets weak if you let it.
Youâve gotta work man â you have to hustle to break through the noise. SOMEONE ELSE is trying harder than you are right now.
Will Smith said â
Thatâs the work ethic Iâm talking about here. You have to be willing to die on that treadmill if you want to be more than mediocre.
You need to hear this everyday so find an energizer like Grant Cardone â Watch the video, save it, revisit it every morning till you get it.
Proven Success Tools: âIf only I knew who and what they knewâŚâ
We have the internet man! We have access to everyone. There are a few tools that lay the foundation to a world of success. Buy them, read them, learn them. Absorb them as audio books, as real books, as small quotes. Whatever you want to do will be decided by your ability to lay these foundations before you will ever be successful.

Anyway, hopefully that helps a few of you get a better handle on your futures. The content I linked are the best in the world. If you want me to breakdown some of the books let me know.
