the lyrics at times give off a kind of unsettling or sarcastic tone? like for example in lines like:

“you can choose me.”

“pick your filter, which me do you want?”

“i will become the new me everyday for you.”

“look at me whose suddenly turned into a child, the more you see the cuter i get.”

it feels like he’s talking about how as an idol, he’s meant to ‘change’ himself to the “me” that fits fans preferences. And this is because the ‘real him’ is uninteresting to some people. like these lines guys, these lines:

“your uninterested face, bored tip of your toes, please look at me now.”

“put down your phone, dont even think of turning your head away, let me know your type.”

hes literally saying he “will become the new me everyday for [us]”. that we as fans are the ones who “make him” and we have the ability to “choose” which “me” we want him to be; we can pick our pretty, shiny “filter” to put over him to make him suit our preferences because “staying the same all the time isnt fun”.

the idea of a filter is to alter the appearance of something, whether to make it pleasing or displeasing. obviously in an idols case, it is the former and jimin cleverly is talking about how idols are very much ‘for the fans’. so a lot of time the concept or the way they act on camera may not 100% reflect how their real personalities are. ultimately, they have to put cute, pretty, sexy, childishly innocent etc “filters” over themselves and their personalities which are dictated by the fans/public reactions and preferences, in order for people keep loving them and stay interested.

although the song could also very much be jimin talking about how he knows (oh we know he do) about his impact and how he affects people, but i very much interpreted this song as a sardonic commentary using the idea of ‘filters’ as a way to talk about how he has to alter himself for the fans - its us who are in control. and based on the context of some of the songs of the album like shadow, black swan etc, talking about the darker, more scary and brutal sides to being a worldwide superstar and ‘on top’ i feel that this interpretation also makes sense within that context.
