Happy Halloween! Here's Diefenbaker carving a pumpkin the only way that he thinks matters - and it's not even filled with donuts: many wolves do love pumpkins. I have been lackadaisical in marking my files, but I think the reference photo I used here was snatched from Wolf Hollow, one of the many wolf sanctuaries where pumpkins are a favorite fall enrichment.
^That's a ~20-minute doodle with my brand new alcohol markers - a new-to-me medium which I hope might kickstart my interest in making art after a few very tiring RL months. I really like the markers, but so far I've spent more time just organizing and sampling them than actually drawing something - so many lovely colors! The other few things I've drawn are also somewhat due South related - maybe I'll just make this post a sketch dump. I think these are in the order I made them; for the CKR sketch I used a cheapy cheap no-brand marker set I found at Clas Ohlson, the rest are made with Ohuhu markers I bought after realizing I really enjoy markers but would prefer brush tips (the CO set is chisel/fine).

Get this, so he came to Chicago on the trail of his father's killer...
Someone recently introduced me to Due South, a 90's show about a Canadian Mountie and Chicago Detectives solving crimes together! I'm really loving it, (and definitely like BOTH Rays) we just crossed into S4! (MOUNTIE ON THE BOUNTY WAS GREAT)
I am OBSESSED with the lighting and camerawork in this show!!!!!!
LOOK AT WHAT @thirdchildart MADE !!!!!
We have been watching through the show from the Pilot and theyâve got such awesome directorâs POV. Iâve gained such an appreciation for the cinematography and direction in the show I didnât have before.
AND LOOK AT OUR SWEET BOY!!!!!

1x02 Diefenbakerâs Day Off // 2x08 One Good Man // 2x13 White Men Canât Jump to Conclusions // 3x01 Burning Down the House | Normalized
due South does a main character re-casting better than any other show on TV, and they do it by playing with television's own accepted meta-narrative.
Recasting a character has a long tradition in television, creating a viewership that knows and understands the storytelling short form at play. As viewers, we realize that sometimes actors aren't available to reprise a role (or simply aren't interested in it anymore); but, for the sake of the story, sometimes the show needs that character to come back. So we lean hard into suspended disbelief and just go with it. After all, the characters in the show accept the parareality of itâwhy shouldn't we?
Of course, the most famous example of a character recast would be the Dick/Darren disaster on 1960s sitcom Bewitched, when Dick York was unceremoniously replaced by Dick Sargent in the role of Darrin Stephens. ("The Dick Wars" would have gone absolutely insane).
it was... not successful
But they weren't the only ones to do it. Aunt Viv from Fresh Prince, Becky from Roseanne, Daario Naharis from Game of Thrones, Greg Serrano from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (pain, agony)ârecasting characters but maintaining the fiction is a storied tradition in TV. New actor, same character; totally normalized.
And shows continue to do it, even today, with aâuhâsimilar dedication to fucking it up doing it poorly.
why must we be punished like this
due South even engages in this trope itself in season 2, when hard-hitting investigative journalist Mackenzie King is recast and they don't even try to find an actress who looks similar. In 1x02 Diefenbaker's Day Off, she's played by brunette Madolyn Smith-Osborne; in 2x08 One Good Man, she's been replaced by blonde Maria Bello, and nobody talks about it.
yeah i'm absolutely the same person, obviously
Everyone diegetically (within the world of the show) is just like, oh yeah, that's hard-hitting investigative journalist Mackenzie King. Totally. Only non-diegetically (outside of the world of the show) does the viewer go "No, that's not the same person." Internally, the fiction proceeds as usual.
So what would happen if, say, Samantha Stephens turned to Dick Sargent and said "You're not Darrin," when everyone else in the show continued to treat him as though he was? Or if Jaskier told Geralt that he knows he's not actually Geralt, and everyone treated him like he was delusional?
Or if Fraser, even, had recognized Mackenzie King as someone entirely different, and everyone treated him like he had a hole in his bag of marbles because of it? Of course that's Mackenzie King; even her boss knows it. No, she's never been a brunette. What are you talking about?
And that's exactly what happens in Burning Down the House.
the rays vecchio
Diagetically, everyone else treats Callum Keith Rennie's character as though he is Ray Vecchio. "Oh, good, you found him," says Det. Huey. Elaine, Franchesca, literally everyone else both at the station and outside of it treat Callum Keith Rennie Ray Vecchio as though he is David Marciano Ray Vecchio. They're acting exactly as any other TV character would in the face of a recasting: as though absolutely nothing had happened.
Except for Fraser.
Fraser's specific brand of parareal Canadian plot magic means that he's immune to the recasting blindness; he's acting as an agent of the viewer, voicing our non-diegetic concerns. Fraser is (as he so often is) a character with one foot outside of the narrative. He's just always been like this and he doesn't know why.
oh this man is infuriating and hot, fuck. shit.
And for a character who already thinks he is likely insane (he sees the ghost of his dead father! He communicates with his deaf half-wolf! He is instantly committed to a mental institution upon voicing the actual true story of his life!), this is very extremely distressing. Fraser thinks he's actually lost it this time, because everyone else in due South is acting like a TV character, and Benton Fraser is acting like a viewer.
This is so brilliant on so many levels. They just fully lampshade the damn thing. It allows our protagonist to speak for disgruntled or confused viewers. It engages at a postmodern level with television as a medium with a storied history (and due South is incredibly postmodern; nearly every episode is or contains a reference to another piece of media). It's written from the perspective of someone who loves and is knowledgeable about TV tropes.
And it gives us an entirely new Ray while still maintaining respect and loyalty to the original, something no other straight (lol) recast could ever do.
Genuinely one of the most clever, witty, well-crafted hours of television ever made. I could write essays about so many different parts of it. And I guess I will!!!!!!
Itâs Burning Down the House week in our dS Stacked Rewatch!
1x02 Diefenbakerâs Day Off | Discreet
Something I missed countless times watching this episode is now one of my favourite little pieces of early character-building in season one!
Fraser rolls his eyes at the way Ray rudely pours his coffee out in front of Hugo the Coffee Guy. Hugo, of course, delivers Fraser chamomile tea, special. He nurses it for most of the scene.
And then as soon as Hugo is out of sight, Fraser dumps the tea in the garbage too.
They really let Benny be so human in these early episodes and I love it. Heâs not a robot; he also hates the tea! He just spares Hugoâs feelings about it. Itâs so Fraser; only a little bitchy and more human when no one is around to see. And unerringly kind.
Him!!!!!!!!!! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3x04 Strange Bedfellows | Generational
One of my favourite little moments between Ben and his dad, and another piece of seemingly-throwaway Canadiana:
Canada didnât adopt the Metric system until 1975. That means our parents all understand Fahrenheit better than they do Celsius, but theyâre saddled with a generation of kids who canât understand Fahrenheit to save their lives.
Throwaway Canadiana actually used to symbolize the generation gap between Benton and his father. Some things, they will never see eye to eye on.

4x05 The Ladiesâ Man | Details
due South is a show that puts a TON of time and effort into subtle details like set dec, blocking, and framing, which invites us to do close readings of particular scenes in great detail. Letâs examine this scene in Rayâs apartment from The Ladiesâ Man with that in mind!
Another thing I find fascinating about this show is its continuity; how significant time can pass between episodes, and itâs up to us to use context clues provided in future episodes in order to piece together what we can about the past; the parts of Fraserâs life that we havenât been permitted to see. This scene is crammed with context clues.
(Itâs worth remembering that John Krizanc, who wrote this episode, is a playwright first and foremost. He basically invented the style of play that would go on to become Sleep No More. The way characters phrase things, where theyâre standing when they say them, what they surround themselves withâthese things all matter.)
So in order, we learn:
Fraser lets himself in â By this point in Season 4, he has a key to Rayâs apartment.
âYou there, Ray?â âMhm.â â Fraser comes over so often that 1) he doesnât call ahead, and b) it doesnât matter if Ray is home or not. Ray doesnât even feel the need to sit up when Fraser enters, let alone answer with words. This is long-time familiarity.
The Hat - Fraser automatically tosses his hat down on a stool thatâs been pulled out from the bar and remains there for this specific purpose. Thatâs where Fraserâs hat lives when heâs over.
Diefenbaker - The wolf is so comfortable at Rayâs place that he jumps on top of Ray to his usual spot on the couch. Reading Dief as Fraserâs Ego, he bounds into the apartment, directly onto Rayâs LAP before LICKING RAYâS FACE. Okay!
The VCR - Fraser knows how to use Rayâs VCR and his TV remote. Those of us who were alive in the â90s know how much practice this would have taken. (Also, hand porn, youâre welcome.)
Seating arrangements â Fraser sits right next to Ray, who sits directly in the center of the couch, between cushions. Cannot be comfortable, but their legs and arms are touching. Their usual spots? Fraser sits ON TOP OF Dief to do this.
âBark tea?â â Ray immediately starts teasing Fraser about his flirtation with the records gal for information. Itâs teasing without intent or malice; Ray knows it was just a front, like Fraser knows Rayâs barbs are just for fun.
âWhat, Iâm a pig?â âNo, no, not that.â â This is an old grievance. This is not the first time Rayâs apartment cleanliness has come up. Itâs something theyâve bickered about many times before. No, no, not that, not the usual. Something else.
The Turtle - The shot lingers on the overhead here to remind us that the macguffin note is in the VHS case, but also serves to focus in on the turtle sculpture. Itâs made to catch your eye, which means we are meant to infer something about it; otherwise, itâs an unimportant, out-of-place distraction from the shotâs real purpose (again, the VHS case). Given what I perceive to be the turtle's Indigenous style, I think this is clearly a gift from Fraser (maybe from the previous Christmas?). He either had it shipped down from a friend up north, or he whittled it himself, and I like to think itâs the latter. Fraser does, after all, think Ray is the world.
TL;DR Fraser is basically living there, oh my god these cops gay, good for them, good for them
Fraser basically living there would go a long way towards explaining the copy of Antony and Cleopatra on the coffee table! I'm absolutely not saying it's impossible that Ray 'Poet on the Inside' Kowalski reads Shakespeare, but it is less likely than Fraser reading Shakespeare.

3x01 Burning Down the House | Continuous
THIS IS ALL ONE SHOT!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS ALL. ONE SHOT.
A nearly two-minute walk and talk in the precinct set with NO CUTS. For TWO MINUTES.
This is TWO FULL YEARS before The West Wing, which popularized the long hallway single shot walk and talk.
Genuinely hard to convey how difficult a shot like this is to choreograph with so many different moving pieces. As one continuous take this shot is WILD. It means everythingâincluding the push in to Ray and Elaine, the pull back out to include Fraser stepping precisely back into frame, the ACTUAL LIVE DOG, the walk into the bullpen with all the extras cutting in front of camera, the gag with the inkâall of that is in ONE GO, NO FUCK UPS.
INCLUDING!! One of the best pieces of acting in the ENTIRE SERIES right here:
THE love at first sight moment. In the MIDDLE of all this.
My favourite thing about this is imagining Gordon Pinsent standing patiently in the bullpen waiting for his moment for the 45 times it took to get the first ninety seconds of this shot clean.
Oh I will never be done being obsessed with this show. The level of stagecraft involved here alone is insane. Paul Gross the man you are,
