“I put the photographs back in their boxes, then made up my bed and lay down to sleep. Only then I remembered that the telephone was plugged in. I got up again, disconnected it and got back under the covers, directing my thoughts towards my work, trying to remember each and every photograph in each series I'd produced, the sequences in which they occurred, it was a good way of keeping them fresh in my mind, as well as a good way of falling asleep. Usually, only a few minutes went by before my thoughts would be infiltrated by other images, and though I would force them back on track, still more would intrude, and eventually, though not long afterwards, my will would become so weakened, so wearied, that the invasive images would come flooding and usurp my conscious thoughts entirely, I would dissolve into them. without being aware of what was happening.”
