Without hesitation, Alex nodded, the idea of getting some fresh air, and some alone time with Sam, incredibly appealing. But the quick response was selfish, especially without discussion. Sighing, he shrugged, pointing back toward his friend. “Do you? I’ll stay if you want to.”
Sam laughed, quickly shaking his head in response. “God no, please get me out of here,” he replied, leaning closer as he did so. Alex seemed eager to abandon the party, and Sam was happy to follow his lead. So long as they were spending time together, he didn’t mind.
After confirmation that it’s what they both wanted, Sam stood up, finished the last swill of his drink, and began heading towards the exit with Alex in tow. He smiled as the cool air hit him, and once they were a fair distance away from the house, Sam turned back around to continue the conversation. “Where do you want to go?”
"That's the spirit," he joked in return, shaking the stranger by the shoulder, egging him on. The touch was probably a bit too familiar, especially for two people who'd just met, but the guy was attractive and Grizz couldn't help himself. It'd been a while since he'd tried flirting with anyone, anyway.
He watched attentively as he was taught a new sign, by Sam, as he learnt soon after. Grizz mirrored the thanks, realising he'd seen the gesture before, then he did it again, thanking the other man genuinely. "Thank you, Sam," he paired it with the new signs. "It's always cool to learn something new. Now I know three signs," he grinned before showing him the sign for 'bullshit'. "This is the only one I knew before today." Then, he gestured to his own chest. "I'm Gareth, but I go by Grizz. How do I spell that?" They were supposed to be gardening but Grizz now found himself excited by the prospect of learning such a visual language, one that had nothing to do with text or writing. He'd struggled with that his whole life, still unable to notate full sentences, but now he wondered if this was something he could actually be good at. Plus, it'd be fun to learn if he had a good teacher.
The touch came as a surprise to Sam, causing his cheeks to flush a subtle shade of pink, but it certainly wasn't unwelcomed. Not from someone so handsome, which is exactly what lead him into reading it as nothing more than friendly.
"You're welcome," Sam replied, once again signing the response, knowing basic signals were the easiest to remember, and the best place to start. The mention of a third sign caused the redhead's face to frown in curiosity though, tilting his head as if he'd somehow forgotten some of their conversation. But Grizz continued on without prompt, and Sam couldn't suppress his laughter at the explanation, shaking his head in mock judgement. "Very nice. How did you learn that?" Sam found himself wondering if Grizz had met his friends first, knowing that 'bullshit' was a commonly used sign in the Baker home. "Your name is Grizz?" Sam was full of questions himself, having to suppress most of them, at risk of coming across too eager. He couldn't remember the last time a conversation had felt so effortless. He smiled, before raising his hands again, slowly spelling out G-R-I-Z-Z. His new friend seemed to be serious about committing to learning, which was a pleasant turn of events, considering Sam was meant to be the student here.
“I don’t get how successfully bouncing some plastic balls into some shitty plastic cups translates to popularity among peers, but who am I to question the system, right?”
Sam smiled, and nodded in agreement. Although he wasn’t against parties, something was holding him back tonight. Perhaps it was because he knew Alex wasn’t entirely enjoying himself, or because Campbell was expected to arrive soon. “Do you want to leave?” He spoke and signed, before gesturing to the door, knowing the loud music would make it harder for him to be understood.

Oh.
He did tell me it was okay to be gay. As long as I didn’t act on it. I used to wonder how I’d ever pull that off. Turns out I didn’t need to worry.
