I am a lot of things. And mentally ill is one of them. I don't make an effort to hide what I've been through, to silence my pain, or to give it a pretty package for anyone else's comfort or consumption. Today, this is me. Hurting. Weighed down. A little lost. But I can tell you something that I've learned in all of these years that I've dealt with my disorders: Being quiet never helped. Hiding never helped. Being ashamed never helped. Stigma? Never helped me one fucking bit. The uncomfortable truth is that there are days when I look like this. Days when I am raw and vulnerable and all of my defenses crash, leaving me a little broken. But what I am not today is ashamed. I'm not ashamed of a single tear and I'm not ashamed of a moment of suffering. These struggles are ingrained in me; so much of who I am has been shaped by the tides of my brain, pushing and pulling. That's a very real part of my experience. So I choose to share this photo. I choose to be visible and to be seen, even when it isn't pretty or attractive or happy. I choose to bear my scars openly because silence has never served me. The best choice I ever made was being loud. I was born screaming and crying, making myself known for the first time, and they said that it was beautiful. It still is. And like hell I'll ever let this stigma take my voice away from me.
