I caught up with the stars at LA’s Paley Center for Media recently and picked their brains about how they feel they would be as parents together in real life.

S: Oh, wow. [There would] probably [be] a lot of bickering, I would imagine

What is like to work so closely together?

C: we just act like a married couple because we act as a married couple all the time so it just sort of bleeds into our real life!

C: What is this slander Sam ???? I think this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black!!!! If the pot is cheery and chirpy and the kettle is tired and grumpy from his tough gym work out !!!! Huh???? Huh????

S: Slander. That’s what it is! Think I may have overdosed. Too much spaghetti to blame...

Would you rather never have whiskey or sex again?

C: never have whiskey again S: eeeeehm... C: you’re doing something wrong if that’s such a struggle, seriously S: no, I'm just thinking but if you’ve got whiskey then you’ll probably end having sex anyway so... no? if you drink enough of it, you’ll probably end up... I don’t know. That’s a really, that’s an unfair question. The two go hand in hand. C: *giggle* yeah they're a good combo

C: Is it weird?  S: Is it weird to say that we watched it together? C: So weird  S: Uuhm with a bottle of wine, a couple bottles of wine actually yeah.  S: We were like, we’ve gotta watch this C: I mean yeah, very we yeah *mumbling and blushing*  S: Yeah and we kind of enjoyed it, but we were quite drunk C: That’s weird but anyway

Heughan finds himself a curious juxtaposition. Is it a disguise? Can you now go to the grocery store or walk through an airport and people don’t recognize you?

Cait: I mean, I can do that anyway. Because I’m scruffy in my day-to-day life. They don’t expect a TV actress to be as scruffy as I am, it’s great. I’ll be standing with him and people will be like, “Sam, Sam, can we take your picture?” And then, like five minutes later, they’ll like, “Oh!” and realize it’s me, because they just think I’m this schleppy…I don’t know.

The show has been well received but it is always off when people recognise you in America or at airports and come up to you. It is very nice but quite strange. In Scotland we are very different, aren’t we? We do take it all with a pinch of salt. Gasglow is certainly a place where they will tell you if they don’t think you are anything special. I can go to the pub or go out for a meal in Glasgow and most of the time people have no idea who I am, but I have to say so far people have been really delightful when they do recognise me.”

“At the centre is Loch Rannoch (that’s Lake Rannoch for non-Gaelic speakers), and at the other end is a mountain called Schiehallion, which they call the mountain of the fairies. It’s this beautiful peak that looks quite iconic.

We shot there last year on my birthday, and I was very lucky to have the following day off. Everyone else was filming, but I managed to sneak off and climb up the top of the mountain.

The view was just incredible. It was so dramatic; everything was still covered in snow. There’s lots of wildlife - pheasants, grouse, wild deer, sometimes you see stags. It’s just a very magical place.”

So, I have to ask about hair: I’m fascinated by your bangs. You cut it right at the end of shooting, right? Did you do it to say, I'm done with Claire?

C: I think it was a really pathetic mini rebellion. I did it in South Africa. We had another two weeks to go. I cut it myself—I robbed the scissors from the hair and makeup department and I took them home and I just was like [chopping motion]. We have a long season. It’s 10 months; it’s very intense. And sometimes I think you want to own a little bit of your own life, and I think that was my really silly personal rebellion.

S: Everything is controlled. You have great freedom playing the characters, but our lives are so structured, you know, the way you look.

C: No, I don't.

S: You do.

I: You guys are really close friends. So what do you like about each other? And you can also tell me what you dislike... 

Sam, laughing: Long list! 

Cait: I mean, Sam’s just so kind. He’s a really good friend. He always checks in. I don’t know, he has one of the biggest hearts and smallest egos that I know. 

[Sam and Caitriona give each other’s high five] 

Sam: Absolute same. 

Cait, laughing: You can't just pick my answer! 

Sam: No, she’s not only a great actress, she's a great friend and a great advice giver, too. And we have each other's backs. It’s a remarkable journey that we’ve been on, starting this together, being thrown in the deep end and being like, 

‘Okay! We're going to do this together’

It’s a nice bond and I think people are fascinated by it...

We respect each other and have got each other's backs. I’m very fortunate that we have that, it’s great.

He’s so great. Sam has such a kind heart and I think that really brings to Jamie. He plays this strength but there also an incredibile vulnerability and just goodness. You know, he’s just really good solar guy and I think that that shines through and there’s a reason why so many women are fanning themselves when he walks around. But he’s also a talented actor as well.

Cait: You know, Scottish people are, they are hilarious and they have a fantastic sense of humour and it's funny, you know, occasionally people on the street will make a comment but it's always something very fun and very sweet, so yeah I love being here and it's kind of like home but it's different enough to feel like you're away

Sam (to a fan): You don’t wanna go to Ireland, spend all your time in Scotland. Cait: Hey! Sam: It’s a poor relative of Scotland. Dark… Cait: Wow Sam: Depressing…terrible, terrible beer. (looking at Cait) I was in an Irish pub last night, I promise it’s ok… Cait: Irish people are like elephants. We don’t forget. (both laughing) [...] I: What should she (the fan) see? Cait: Well I do Scotland and you do Ireland (laughing) Sam: Great idea…ok Cait: I would say go to Loch Rannoch in Scotland, it's where we film all the stones scene and it's the most beautiful place I've been. Sam: Don't go there, there is a lot of crazy fans (both laughing) it is beautiful, isn't it? Cait: Yeah. Sam: It's amazing Cait: And you can climb Schiehallion while you are there. Sam: You can! It's great and it can be your first munro. [...] Sam: Ireland... I would say Dublin is an amazing city, if you go north the Giant ‘s Causeway is incredible, It's really a fun place and you can go to Bushmill distillery, you can go to Guinness... it doens't all revolve around alcool but it does... sometimes... for me, it's a great country.

Obviously I sort have missed my partner in crime but it's not that long, until  he's driving me nuts once again.

Since you two have been such close partners on this whole experience, what was it like to go on without her?

Yeah. Honestly, it’s like having a death in the family. Well, I don’t know, I mean, it’s just like a different show. It’s hard to separate yourself from the character. Jamie’s present, living in his world, and Claire’s present and living in her world, and they both believe the other is dead. It’s always hard when we’re apart, actually, because she’s a great person, great to come to work with, and a very good actress. But I think it all adds to the reunion—if there’s a reunion, or when there’s a reunion—well you know there’s one in the books. It should be very special.

When I talked to Sam last week, he said filming Season 3 without you was “like having a death in the family—”

Och! He’s already killed me in his mind. Gone. Too sad.

What is it like for you to shoot without Sam?

It’s really strange! Sam and I obviously have worked so closely together for the last three years. Even when I was filming some stuff with Tobias  it was never solid blocks where Sam and I wouldn’t be working at least a couple of days in between. I definitely miss him. The other day we were in the makeup trailer right beside each other, and we’re like, “Oh, you’re off to your world, and I’m off to my world.” It’s very strange... I think pretty soon we’ll be back together, and he’ll be sick of the sight of me.

She said. Then she gave us a cheeky smile and added,

"He's a god, let's be honest. He's as good in real life as he is on TV."

The first time we screen tested together, I’d been on board the show for a couple of months. I had flown out to America different times to screen test different girls, also London and New York. They couldn’t find the right actress to play Claire, they couldn’t agree. Caitriona came in. We had a fantastic audition. We had a big scene to do by the river from Episode Nine, where Jamie and Claire go for each other. There’s dramatic high stakes. I remember tearing pieces out of each other, it was very physical, I had her in a bear hug, looking at her, and she was really pissed off at me, really angry, really strong. We were both willing to go for it. It’s important that Claire is Jamie’s foil and likewise, they’re equal.

How is it working with Caitriona [Balfe], how have you gotten to know her, and what's it like working together?

The first time I met Caitriona was in her screen test. We’d seen a lot of other actresses to play the part, and they were very good and fantastic. But as soon as she came in, you could tell there was something about her, and I think all the producers sat up. The scenes just went really well in our screen test, and I remember at one point having her in a bear hug, like, sort of we were face-to-face in this really passionate scene, arguing with each other. And I thought, oh, I've really, really upset her here. She's really angry at me. And I thought this was great. And she was giving as much as I was giving her; and as she left all the producers kind of looked at each other and I could tell that they really liked her. She was wearing a great dress as well, it was really good, it was a slight tartan, but yet also a sort of 1920s look to it. So she did a great job. And, to be honest, working with her has just been a joy. She's so easygoing. The whole crew loves her, she's just easy to get on with, creative, intelligent, and pretty good-looking, too.

Interviewer: Your co-star Sam became kind of obsessed with the baby belly?

Cait: oh yeah! It got awkward… We had 3 different bellies: a very small little bump, which was very cute; then there was the mid-size, that was a sort of a small basketball, which he thought was a basketball, and he would come and grab it, and poke it. I had to remind him that I was still there… and then we got to the third one, which I think was too big for him. He was like “oh no, not that one”

I: You had the bump in this season. Did you ever try on the bump?

Cait: Yeah what did you do with the bump?

Sam: I did try on the bump…

Cait: At one point I told him Sam it’s not a basketball, cause he was like…

Sam: ...kind of obsessed by it. It’s really fun to poke, but also just rub it […] There was sexy bump and then there was too much bump

Interviewer: My partner is obsessed with the gym. I feel like he’s spending more time there than with me. What can I do?

Sam: Well they’re doing it for a reason, they’re doing it for you. Don’t you want your partner to look terrible, do you?

Cait: ...or you sit them down and you tell them that it’s what’s inside that matters, not the size of your bycepts. It’s what’s inside and that’s why you love them. You just wanna spend more time with them and them less time with themselves in the mirror

Cait: He’s so good. It’s so annoying. That’s the thing. So we go to set, right? And you know, you get in at 5:30, 6 in the morning. I’m like bleary eyed and [drinking] coffee the size of my head, and Sam’s like ‘Yeah, just been to the gym.’ And then he goes to the gym after work as well. It’s a tough person to be around sometimes. I really hope I find out he’s like a secret junk food, midnight eater.

Sam: It’s about, I guess, adapting and not pushing yourself to a point where you’re stressed about it, but also fitting it in when you can. If you can’t fit in that hour and a half workout or that hour workout, why not go do 20 minutes? Or get up early and just go for a walk?

Sam: I think everyone knows that she’s got a terrific sense of humor but she’s a terrible giggler, she corpses all the time and it’s got to the point now that if I want to get out of a scene or just you know make a stop, I can just give her a little look and she’s gone. She’s great fun to work with I’m so lucky.

Sam: Most recently we were shooting like one of the last episodes and it was a very serious moment, [...] and the camera’s on me, and Caitriona just every time was just corpsing and laughing the whole time. And she doesn’t help me at all. She just stands there openly laughing in my face and it’s difficult to work with her, so I’m gonna get her sacked.

Cait: You know, we goof around on set, but at the end of the day it’s work. You’re only allowed to mess around for so long before you start getting dirty looks from people. I don’t know if we’re a fun bunch. We laugh at nothing. Nothing amuses us. We’re like the Seinfeld episode. We don’t need anything actual to happen; we just amuse ourselves anyway.

Cait: It’s always a lot of fun. Sam and I usually descend into complete adolescence, either hit each others with things or just do stupid voices. That happens a lot.

Do you think chivalry is dead? 

Chivalry – no! Not if I’ve got anything to do with it!

What does ‘chivalry’ mean to you?

I guess it’s about being honourable and respecting people and just thinking of others rather than yourself I guess. I don’t know! I’d have to look it up in the dictionary.
