“I hadn’t heard.” Sam hums for a second. “It’d mean some new dynamics in the magic system, but maybe the world could use some shaking up. After the Dragons, of course.”

Sam hummed quietly to herself before tucking the letter in her back pocket. This whole business felt odd. Not the letter - being a bounty hunter, she received mysterious correspondences all the time. The Isle. The familiarity of it all…

To Erebus, whoever you are. They’re changing by the day. Sometimes I think I’ve been through these trials before. The dragons want strength to defeat the Puppet Master, but I wonder why they don’t take on the task themselves. I’m grateful for your correspondence, I have to admit. The dragons aren’t much for conversation. Your drawing was nice enough. Have we met? S.S.

“I’ve been my own teacher for so long, it’s highly unlikely that you have anything left to teach me.” She eyed Malachite up and down before tilting her head. “That being said, you’ve got nerve enough to approach me, so let’s hope you have the nerve to show me something new.”

Sam picked up the piece of paper, frowning. “Erebus . . . someone at the Academy, maybe?” But she didn’t know anyone at the Academy . . . nevertheless, it was quite the portrait. She smiled to herself and tucked the piece of paper into a pocket in her armor.
