Her comment got two pairs of eyes fixed one her for one two three four five beats before they turned away, back to each other. “What’s the trade?” Sam asked, shaking their (at least previously) short hair out of their eyes to no avail.

“Water,” Sean answered deftly, walking over to where they stored bottles and containers of water and getting out an old Gatorade bottle full of it, handing it to Adrie. “Ointment?”

     A hand stretched out; aching to snatch the filthy plastic from     his hand. It was not their scrutiny that was responsible for how     dry her mouth felt. It was the glint of water- murky, perhaps, but     water still. With her other hand, she offered him the battered tin.      A trade was a trade.                                      But with conditions.
