Salem SharePoint User Group

 We recently went to the Office 365 with our Lync communications.  The Lync transition went smoothly, but a day into the change in our environment we noticed that SharePoint Designer 2010 workflows were giving us an error stating that “SharePoint Designer cannot display the item” and one of the causes could be a that it has been deleted from the site.

 After the initial panic that the workflow may actually be gone and realizing that it was still intact, other were experiencing the same problem it became time to identify the problem.  It seems this is a documented issue when organizations move to Office 365 for SharePoint.  What was interesting is that our SharePoint is still on-premise. It is only our Lync communication that is now in Office 365 but it created the same result.

 The trick was to get everything working again was to delete the SharePoint Designer Proxy Assembly Cache and then try opening the workflow again.  This works with both SharePoint Designer 2010 and 2013.  The Cache files are located at C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SharePoint Designer\ProxyAssemblyCache

Extending Workflows with Nintex SharePoint Workflows offer compelling process automation opportunities, but the delivery of complex workflows is hampered by out-of-the-box limitations or requires development experience. While customized workflows offer the greatest value to an organization, the costs and availability of precious development resources often restrict investments. In 2011, the Port of Portland conducted a document content management pilot project as part of a long-identified need for the Port to have an enterprise content management (ECM) system. Project objectives included designing and proving out how content (files) could be reviewed, assigned metadata, and migrated to a SharePoint ECM system. I will be sharing a mix of technical implementation details and business information, including lessons we learned from the project.

Utah Transit Authority operates one of the largest transportation service areas in the country (over 1,600 square miles), with buses, vans, and light rail serving six counties and approximately 1.8 million people. UTA had been tracking various types of transportation service reporting data in an under-utilized SQL database for years. UTA tapped Marquam Group to develop a meaningful reporting dashboard that utilizes SharePoint 2010, Performance Point, Excel Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services and Reporting Services. Jeff Roller of Marquam Group will demonstrate and discuss the solution.

This months presentation is one that I honestly have a personal love hate relationship with, SharePoint Search! Like many of you I have set-up search, had it work and eventually started tweaking it to get refined results. I have also had my search go really, really wrong and even corrupted. But no matter what type of SharePoint installation we have or what type of user or administrator we are; Eventually we all reach a point when we need and want to be able to search our content in SharePoint effectively and with ease.

Ever wonder how other organizations and groups are using SharePoint? Does the SharePoint Architect/Developer the next town over know a magical secret to make administering and developing on SharePoint easier?  In most cases, the answer is “No.”  But it is interesting to see how other organizations choose to use SharePoint.  Because the members of the Salem SPUG asked for member presentations we have lined up three presentations from local SharePoint Architects, Developers and Administrators.

Presentation 1 – 20 minutes

Julius Moreland from the City of Corvallis will share how they are using SharePoint as a way to collect information on, Accident Reports (Near Miss Reports) with the Police Department for reporting injuries, vehicle accidents, and other close calls. This has quickly and entirely replaced the previous paper reports, and has been so successful it will be extended to accommodate all City departments.

Presentation 2 – 20 minutes

Suzanne Jorgensen and Bryce Fields work with NIC the group that is working hard to convert the state internet presence to SharePoint.  They have agreed to talk about “Responsive Web Design in SharePoint”

Users visit your website on a wide variety of devices, from desktops to handheld phones to tablets, thus web designs must now be developed for many different screen sizes and resolutions. Responsive web design is the approach that suggests design and development should follow this reality and respond to the users specific device behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. This means developing one website that can be consumed on any device. By mixing flexible grids and layouts, images and CSS5 media queries comprise the basic technical foundation for this simple user-friendly solution. When the user switches devices, a responsive web design will automatically respond to the user's preferences. NIC will be sharing strategies and examples of this new approach to web design.

Up until now the idea has been that members could bring thier lunch to the meeting and eat while there minds filled with information about SharePoint and conversation with other members. However, the last few meeting it had begun to surface that some members are choosing between lunch and the meeting. So comes the question... Should we be serving lunch, or beverages at the meeting?
