Ajax (1991-2011)
All I can think about is the quiet that shaped me
So quiet here, I can hear my own longing
And then a freight train passes
I remove my makeup
After the bashment partyÂ
We, from Caribbean elsewheres
And other elsewheres
Bubble until morningÂ
Another day,
Costco-bound, Winnersâ bags, Timmies, backroads at noon
A power tower doesnât yet catch my eye
Nor do the corn fields that are John Boddyâs now
Nor do the brilliant purple flowers on the side of the westward highwayÂ
We take to escape to the (Scar)borough we wanted to be from
Someoneâs mother places a wine glass down
Refilled until empty
A bottleâs tipping motion sounds likeâŚ
We can never find the words for this most delicate undertakingÂ
Of pulling oneself apart
White Flight but the Mourning Dove stays grounded, comforts me
A lake pulls me southward
Each wave a thing more purposeful than my own life
And yet its pull, never strong enough to stop the decay
grief is mostly silentÂ
not in the feet shufflingÂ
the flower-givingÂ
chorus of condolencesÂ
the wailing, evenÂ
it is precisely as loud as a memoryÂ
a meaningful gaze across a roomÂ
found in what their eyes didÂ
open and close and open and close once moreÂ
the sound of grief
I opened my blog page and pressed âFollowâ to see where I would go. I led myself nowhere. I am waiting for my becoming and nothing arrives.
I have a friend so lovely, so beautiful and with so much depth that you couldnât imagine that she could feel the chronic and crippling loneliness that she does. She craves something that I will leave unnamed, something she has been unable to acquire. I offer her trite advice and cliched words of consolation that, though I believe, would hate to hear myself, and she receives it all gracefully and sometimes with a smile. Lately her eyes have a sad tenderness to them. I donât have the right presence. I feel my life, as it is lived, to borrow the words Anais Nin, only emphasizes her loneliness.

the bullets tearing through air
the same air
reverberating call to prayer
اŮŮؾع؊ 2008
I fell for a Palestinian man in Nazareth. He managed a splendid hotel. He was business-minded, constantly distracted, but tender.Â
I had never known such tenderness.Â
It became strangely intimate in surprising ways. Once, only a few days after meeting him, I borrowed his camo fatigues and wore them around town. He never asked questions. Neither did I. I liked it that why.
He took me everywhere I wanted to go, and places I never asked him to. Sometimes I wanted to be alone, but he never left my side even in Galilee in a splendid church that demanded solitude.
No one seemed to care that I was Black. It was remarkable.Â
We had one extraordinary fight in his magnificent quarters. The sunlight touched his arched doorway in a particular way that mesmerized me, and when he stormed out and left me there, I watched him walk away, smiling curiously like this had been my entire life. It was a strange and most welcomed feeling, the feeling of briefly occupying another personhood in a place so distant from who I was. Somehow the intimacy of the fight folded his neighbourhood, his flat, and an abstraction of Palestinian life into my sense of self. But it was brief. We made ourselves unknowable, inaccessible to one another, and yet--when it was time for me to leave--we parted in peace, with smiles and warmth and not a single empty promise. We stayed in touch for a time but gradually it all faded way, only to be revived from time to time in a conversation, a fleeting thought, a photo, a written story.Â
No one has heard
A sob of pain
In the chanting of BrazilÂ
A sad lament
Has always echoed
Since the Indian warrior
Was brought to  captivity
And from there has sungÂ
The negro intoned
A chant of rebellion in the air
In the Quilombo dos Palmares
Where he took refuge
Not to mention the struggle of the Inconfidentes
For breaking the chains
Nothing availedÂ
And from war to peace
From peace to war
All the people of this land
Whenever can sing
Sings in painÂ
Ă´, Ă´, Ă´, Ă´, Ă´,Â
Ă´ Ă´, ô, Ă´, Ă´, Ă´,Â
Ă´ Ă´, Ă´, ô, Ă´, Ă´,Â
Ă´ Ă´, ô, ô, Ă´, Ă´, Ă´Â
And it echoes night and day
It is deafening
Ah, but what an agony
The singing of the workerÂ
This singing that  should
Be a chanting of joy
Sounds just
As a sob of pain
He is watching, I am too
There are greater gazes
I turn away
But from afar, my slow moving tongue
Uncertain of its role, says
Letâs make ourselves flawed to each over
But the head has turnedÂ
My body exits
through a door, left ajar
not pose or poetry, strictly sartorial
Over the years, Iâve come to love my personal style. It has evolved into something that truly reflects me.
I love sleek bags and monochromatic tops & bottoms I love casual blazers and Chelsea booties with loose-fit jeans I love mandarin collars & asymmetry My core pieces are minimalistic But I love well-crafted shoes with ornate designs And pashmina headwraps in brilliant colours As for jewellery, I love statement piecesÂ
Sand, turquoise, grey, cream, scarlet and gold are my colours of choice. I get sartorial inspiration from West & North African, Desi, Persian, Khaleeji, and Japanese cultures.Â
I generally dislike shopping and avoid malls. Iâve discovered some of my favourite pieces, by chance, in places like Mexico City, Cairo, and Jerusalem and in cute popups and marketplaces around Toronto and Edmonton.
Iâve moved away from fast fashion and shifted towards more ethical and even vegan brands in place of leather, but not entirely. I truly wish I had better experiences finding items at second-hand stores.
Brands I love (mostly ethical, mostly Canadian): Matt & Nat / Balbea / Osborn / SaraswastiÂ
This will be my first and last fashion-related post. I recommend following political fashion blogger Hoda Katebi.

v. intr. feeling the tranquil pleasure of being near a gathering but not quite in itâhovering on the perimeter of a campfire, chatting outside a party while others dance inside, resting your head in the backseat of a car listening to your friends chatting up frontâfeeling blissfully invisible yet still fully included, safe in the knowledge that everyone is together and everyone is okay, with all the thrill of being there without the burden of having to be.

Within
The wildness within me is moving with the spirit of the timesâdisturbed and in too many directions at once. Â The body is afraid of violence, the mind assaulted by crude ideas, the community divided by one conflict or another. And so I sit here still, inward-facing, strange, and in dismayâa quiet madwoman never far from tears.
I look around, but mostly at myself, and think so much of what we consume feels satisfying yet ultimately fails to elevate us.

In the midst of their perfection, the most joyful among us end their lives.
Decipher, if you will
An obsession will disappoint
Our Gentleness is sacrosanct
But lost already in consumption
Of too many crowded ideascapes
Of slow moving tongues in their words
And assailing a/the self
In attaining them
