Just Updated A Sashiko Furoshiki

SAINT online store/ Ranru Aizome Sashiko Furoshiki b-000053

Sashiko work is one of Japanese traditional handwork. “Sashi“ is Japanese verb of “sasu”, which means stab or quilt finely.

Sashiko is not just beautiful as a design, it’s very functional for wrapping stuffs.

You can see four sashiko works on all corners on the above item. Sashiko works had been added on furoshiki to strength the fabric and to tie strongly when wrap things.

That is one of items of “yo-no-bi“ or “beauty of usage” in English, proposed by Muneyoshi Yanagi.

There are various geometric designs on Sashiko work, such as kiku petal, sayagata and cross like above furoshiki. It’s so interesting to watch them.

絣（かすり）の魅力

こちらは、当店で販売している袖なしの野良着です。

ご覧いただいてお分かりの通り、藍染の地に白い柄が出ていますよね。これは「絣（かすり）」という手法です。逆バージョンの「白絣」という手法もあります。こちらは、白地に藍染の糸でもようを出していくもので、涼しげな印象があります。

当店の野良着や布団皮には、絣もようがあしらわれているものが多くありますが、このデザインはどうやって作られているかご存知でしょうか。

　布の上に染料を塗りつけてデザインする「後染め」とは違い、「絣」は「先染め」つまり、糸をあらかじめ染めておいて機織りで織り上げていくのです。布地にじかにデザインを染めつけない代わりに、どうしたら思うように仕上げることができるのでしょうか？！

　まず初めに、仕上げたい全体のイメージ（下絵）を決めます。それを元に、柄になるところは白く残るよう、染まらないため「防染」の作業を糸にほどこします。（これは紺地の場合です。白絣ですと反対ですね。）

　そして、藍染の釜に浸し、より濃い色を出したければ浸す回数を増やします。染めが終わると、糸を当初の下絵にあわせて、機織りしていくのです。

　とてつもなく繊細で、手間ひまを要するものだと思いませんか？！イメージしていた下絵を完全に再現するには、寸分狂わぬ糸の配置が必要なのです。熟練の技術によるものなのですね☆

　絣もようには、井桁絣、十字絣、蚊絣、ゆきんこ絣...などいろんな種類があります。面白いですよ〜☆

　また、その織り方は、細かければ細かいほどに価値が高くなるとされています。

　ぜひ当店にお越しくださり、当時の織り手たちの技術の結晶を肌で感じていただきたいと思います。
