Happy President's Day!
A Sailor's Valentine
Sailor's Valentines were gifts brought home for loved ones after a sailor's voyage at sea. These mementos were originally popular in the early 19th century, when many men were away whaling for long periods of time. The intricate designs are created using seashells glued into octagonal shadowboxes, often hinged to close for safe traveling. Designs included hearts, compass rose motifs and romantic phrases.
Antique Sailor's Valentine c. 1850, Barbados
Stories said that sailors would collect shells from the beaches they went to on their travels and create these gifts for their wives or betrothed back home, proving that they were thinking of them always. We now know that all of the shells used in original sailors valentines are native to the Barbados, and that sailors purchased these souvenirs from Caribbean women as gifts.
Sailors valentines became a popular craft for New England ladies in the Victorian era, and again in the mid 20th century. Kits are now widely available in many craft stores and online, but the most romantic valentines come from shells collected personally. A detailed sailor's valentine can use hundreds of shells, so if you'd like to make one for your special someone, it's time to start collecting!

Three Sheets to the Wind
Many expressions commonly used today originated with seafaring folk. Some (Anchors away) are obvious, while others (Hard and Fast) are more difficult to trace. One such phrase, three sheets to the wind, had an obvious connections for sailors, but for you landlubbers, here is a brief explanation of the term.
On a sailboat, the sheets refer to the lines used to control the movable corners of a sail. A sailor who has had a bit too much to drink may neglect the sheets, leaving the sails flapping in the wind.. One sheet to the wind referred to a sailor who was slightly tipsy, but a sailor three sheets to the wind had truly overindulged.
Join Sail Montauk for the Tuesday Night Regatta's Three Sheets to the Wind after party, and impress everyone with your knowledge of the phrase's origin (then have them buy you a beer)!
