Realise that there is nothing greater than truth. Truth is God and righteousness is God’s only ornament. Adhere to these two as the highest attributes in your life. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY AS WRITTEN AT PRASHANTI NILAYAM TODAY 01.07.2017 Many people come to Me distraught and pray, “Swami, I have no peace. Please bless me with peace of mind”. Remember, peace cannot be got from the outer world; it has to be sought in the heart! Wicked desires breed misery; beneficial desires result in joy. The removal of desire ensures peace (Shanti). When desire after desire multiply in your mind, how can you gain peace? After bhajan and meditation, you repeat Shanti thrice praying for physical, mental and spiritual peace. Only when you are aware of the same soul present in all can you receive peace as a blessing. Most of the time, your mind is tending towards evil (durmathi). You must direct your mind and your intellect into propitious channels of peace and prosperity. Through consistent spiritual practice (Sadhana), correct your faults and mould your excellences to ensure peace for yourself, your society and your nation. By unceasing recitation of the name of God, Prahlada knew that God is everywhere! It is not correct to assert, "He is only here" or that "He is not there." The realisation of this eternal Truth can dawn upon you only after intense spiritual practice (Sadhana). You may see all kinds of attractive articles in a departmental store or mall; they cannot be yours merely by wishing for it or asking for it from the shopkeeper. Only those articles for which you pay can be secured by you. Similarly, you may be very interested in ‘Realisation’, but for you to secure it, you must be willing to pay the price. Take courage and defeat your inner foes of lust, greed, hate and pride, and you will surely secure undisputed mastery over yourself and reach your goal! It teaches that God's Grace can be won through justice and righteous living; and not through wealth, scholarship or power. All who in a spirit of surrender and dedication, live in peace and harmony in society are in fact, followers of Islam. Islam insists on full co-ordination between thought, word and deed. Muslim holy men and sages have been emphasizing the need to inquire into the validity of the 'I' which feels it is the body and the 'I' which feels it is the mind, and reach the conclusion that the real 'I' is the self yearning for the Omni Self, God. During the Ramzan month, the fast and the prayers are to awaken and manifest this realisation. No matter which religion you follow, remember that the emphasis should be on unity, harmony and equal-mindedness. In fact, you will be polluting your heart in the process. All that you see and hear gets imprinted on your heart. Once your heart is polluted, your life will become meaningless. The other day, while speaking to the devotees from Visakhapatnam, I quoted this example: “Human heart is like a pen. The colour of the words that you write will be the same as the colour of the ink in the pen.” Hence, teach your ears to listen to the stories of the Lord instead of listening to vain gossip. What is the second of the eight flowers we must offer to God? How do we offer that flower? Bhagawan lovingly explains to us today. Today's Sai Inspires from Prashanti Nilayam. Offer to God the flower of sense control (indriya nigraha). All spiritual practices will prove futile if you lack sense control. Lack of sense control is the main cause of all the unrest and agitation that you find in the world today. How can you control the senses? First, you should exercise control over the tongue. You must control your tongue as it always craves for a variety of delicacies. Ask this question, “O tongue, how many bags of rice, wheat and vegetables have you devoured! How many delicacies have you consumed! Fie on you if you are still not satisfied!” Eat only to satisfy your hunger and sustain the body. Do not give undue importance to taste. Likewise, tell your eyes to see God instead of watching unsacred things on the television or media. Teach your ears to listen to the stories of the Lord instead of listening to vain gossip. All that He desires from you is eight types of ‘flowers’. The flower of ahimsa (nonviolence) is the first of the eight flowers you should offer to God. Nonviolence means not causing harm to any living creature in thought, word or deed. Doctors perform surgeries on patients to cure them of their ailments. During surgery, doctors cut the body with a knife. You cannot call it an act of violence because it is beneficial to the patient. Some people argue that even cutting vegetables is an act of violence because the vegetables and trees have life in them. No doubt, vegetables and trees have life, but they do not have the mind. Consequently, they do not suffer any pain. One with the mind experiences pain and pleasure. Humans, animals, birds and insects are endowed with the mind, not the trees and vegetables. Every individual in it is part of this society, bound to it by the love that draws an individual to another, to be kith and kin. This love is there, deep in the heart of every individual. Only, it is unrecognised, ignored, doubted, denied, and argued away. It is the secret source of all empathy and service; it creates the urge to live in and for society. It is Universal Love (Vishwa-Prema) that flows from one spark of the Divine to all sparks. When the eyes shine illumined by the highest wisdom, Jnana, they see all as One. Then the individual realises - Sarvam Brahmamayam Jagath (All is pervaded by Divinity in this apparently changing and transforming world). To experience this One revealed as present in all, at all times, you must develop faith and discipline your mind.
