Q: Youāre about to leave. Did your visit to Maldives meet your expectations?
Minho: Everything is nice. It was nice to see turtles when snorkeling. Following manta ray and scuba diving were fun. Lastly, taking seabob was pretty fun too. As expected, it was good to have mojito in Maldives. When I did the photoshoot, the weather was pretty good that I got drawn by the atmosphere when doing it. Everything is just a good memory. Itās unforgettable.
Q: Originally, your nickname was flaming charisma, right? I wanted to call you flaming stamina. Your tanned skin is visible after doing water activities.
Minho: I actually wanted to get tanned. I shouldāve gotten more tanned, so itās too bad I wasnāt able to. I think my stamina is certainly better than others. When Iām with other people, they all are tired although I donāt really feel tired. It may be because we do performances many times that our stamina naturally becomes better?
Q: You came here with Onew. How was the other membersā reactions?
Minho: We both talk a lot, and it was great that we both came here together. I asked him to come here again next time. I didnāt show off to them, but they must be jealous inside. Haha!
Q: Youāre in the middle of concert tour now, is everything going smoothly?
Minho: Itās a very long tour, but itās nice to meet fans from concerts. I gain strength when I perform, so Iām always thankful to my fans.
Q: Do you see your fansā face and expression from the stage?
Minho: I can see them very clearly and we make eye contact too. I put on in-ears, so I canāt hear what they say well. I take off my in-ears during performance when I really canāt hear or when I want to hear my fans voice. There are a lot of times when I want to hear my fans cheer louder so I take off my in-ears.
Q: Itās been 9 years since you debuted together. Isnāt it amazing?
Minho: We didnāt really think that itās amazing, but the people around us said that itās a big thing. There are words that idolās life-span is 5 years or 7 years. Without troubles and worries, we have passed that phase safely. If you ask what are the tips, honestly there is nothing to say. We know what we are good at and what we donāt like, so we understand Ā each other and are considerate of each other.
Q: Your 9th year anniversary happened on the day when youāre here, right?
Minho: Ah, I was very touched by the cake. May 25 is a very special number to me. Itās like a day I was born again? I always think of it as my 2nd birthday. My debut day is unforgettable.
Q: What did you say to the members?
Minho: Before we came here, I asked them to go for a drink together and we all had the same thought. We said something like, āAlthough itās hard and it can be exhausting, letās work hardā. We donāt really do cheesy talk. We already understand without needing to say it to each other.
Q: Do you enjoy making transformation for group activities?
Minho: We have obsession that we always have to show different color. Since we want it and the people like it so much, weāre concerned and work very hard at how to show that side well. In the early debut days, we mostly followed what our company suggested, but now our opinions are reflected a lot. Ā
Q: Youāve become a solid senior group that juniors would cover your songs.
Minho: I remember those days when we covered Shinhwa and TVXQ songs in the past. It feels strange that weāve become the biggest senior when we go to music shows. Weāre still young because weāve debuted at young age, but the number of juniors has increased.
Q: How have the members changed after 9 years?
Minho: Lee Soo Man put thoughts on our skills or our character balance on the stage. From what I see, weāre almost similar. If there is any change, itās about how weāve become mature. Other than that, we are really similar. We tend to give judgement rationally rather than emotionally. When there are different views, I could feel that weāve become mature with the way we resolve them.
Q: Are you now used to the price of fame? There are fans wherever you go.
Minho: Itās a work in which I receive love from many people. I need to put up with it and feel more thankful as time goes by.
Q: Your fans left a lot of thank you message to us for letting Minho and Onew spend a good time. Theyāre really great.
Minho: Sometimes when I see them I feel like they know me more than myself. Just like a word that says fans resemble their idols, I do think weāre like a mirror to each other. If I behave like this, then my fans will be have the same. When fans behave well, it reflects on me too.
Q: I think the character you played in <Hwarang> last year resembled you in real life.
Minho: Surely, there are similarities, but our details are different. Itās the first time I met a lot of same age friends, so I became close with Seojun hyung, Taehyung, and Jihan. Actually thatās the reason why I chose Hwarang as the historical drama that I wanted to try.
Q: Do you feel the same enjoyment with acting, just as much as you enjoy being on the stage?
Minho: Acting has been my dream. I show the image of myself a lot when I do activities as a SHINee member. It is fun to try out a new character when Iām acting. I learn a lot from the character and the things I didnāt usually experience. Thatās the charm of acting. The people who act might feel it, that thereās joy in finding a new side in myself and expressing my thoughts through acting.
Q: What ambitions do you have in acting?
Minho: I want to meet a lot of good seniors and do a lot of projects. Someone can become an actor who leads the play when he has a lot of experience. I plan to do it step by step. I will strengthen my foundation as I gradually move forward step by step and I will work hard to become an actor that can show a good appearance.
Q: What kind of effort do you put in order to be good at acting?
Minho: I try to learn about daily life stuff. I think acting is about ārelatabilityā more than anything else. Thereās a basketball citizen league. Iām into it these days. There are two to three matches each week and I usually participate once or twice in a week. So why would celebrities participate in a basketball citizen league? But I get to understand peopleās happiness and sadness by participating in it. I wonāt miss out on those daily life stuff and remember them.
Q: Are you seeking for another project?
Minho: My next project is a one-act play and my character wears school uniform. I think I should take a project in which I wear school uniform for the last time, so I wanted to do this more.
Q: So you donāt only have concert schedules?
Minho: Thatās why I came here. I want to go and play āhardā and work āhardā. I will go to the gym after this interview. I think itās good to hit the gym first before getting on a plane.

Q: This is your last night in Maldives. What are the most memorable things?
Onew: First is playing outside. The nature is very very beautiful. Thanks to the villa I'm staying in I could see the ocean just by sitting leisurely, and I also could see it just by opening the curtain. In the morning or at night, my mind got calm when I saw the ocean from my villa. Next is doing sea activities. I didn't know I could see a turtle this close!
Q: The villa is nice, right? Although the wind sound is a bit loud sometimes due to monsoon.
Onew: I saw stingray come and go. The water level changes every hour. I get to know how deep is the water.
Q: What's a good point of Minho as your travel buddy?
Onew: As you see, Minho is always full of energy. I don't know what I should do so I canāt decide. But Minho organizes the things that he wants to do. Minho's good point, but also a weak point is that he has too much energy. (laughs)
Q: What did you put inside your suitcase?
Onew: I brought four white t-shirts. I always leave some space.
Q: You're still touring right? What concert is it?
Onew: It's overseas concert and we want to show it in high
quality just like what we did in Korea.
Q: You're a concert veteran now, right? Are you still nervous when coming on the stage?
Onew: No matter how many times I've experienced it, I'm always concerned about maintaining my stamina. However, I always fail at the first show. There is a moment where I burst out my energy explosively that I become so exhausted. Different situations also occur when I do the same performance several times, but I overcome them all as I exchange gaze with the members.
Q: Do you understand each other only by looking at their eyes now?
Onew: Not everything, but I think Minho kind of knows. (laughs)
Q: Yesterday was your 9th debut anniversary right? How was the past 9 years?
Onew: It's short if it's short, and it's long if it's long... I think the strongest point of a team is that it continues to exist. Our affection grows as we undergo things together over time.
Q: How have the members grown up?
Onew: I think everyone has grown up into a good direction. As each of us are trying to find ourselves, individually, our area of capabilities have gradually become bigger. We gain synergy because of that.
Q: It seems that you care about the other members more because youāre the oldest?
Onew: I just listen to them when they tell me something. I also whine a lot. Since weāve been together for over 10 years, there are days when they are like the hyung, and there are also days when Iām like the hyung.
Q: When is the time when you feel itās nice to have done this career for 9 years?
Onew: Because weāre no longer rookies, itās nice that weāre able to match each other.
Q: Is āA team that is always trustworthyā a thing that comes across your mind when you think of SHINee? Theyāre like perfectionist at their performances and songs.
Onew: Haha! When Iām working hard on a performance there are times when I donāt think much about it when itās near the last stage.
Q: What is the hardest song?
Onew: Energy-wise, I think the hardest song is āEverybodyā. I like it because itās the song that grasp strong performance. However, I will be 30 next year so I wonder until when will I be able to dance to āEverybodyā? (laughs)
Q: Haha. I think you still can do it even after 10 years?
Onew: Right? There is a word that an idol groupās limit is 5 years? But weāve already passed that phase.
Q: You always try to show different look and concept. Do you enjoy transformation?
Onew: It is always a challenge each time. We always have that concern whenever we release an album. We come out as a contemporary band that leads a trend by showing a new image, how come it wouldnāt be a burden to us? We might succeed, but we might also fail⦠It seems that everyone who creates something undergoes the same burden. It means we should work hard to find good points in it. We have confidence in ourselves. Looking at the members, I think they are good and doing well.
Q: Do you have any plans to release a solo album? I think a lot of people are curious.
Onew: A solo album? I also want to release a solo album. It is still not certain but there are things Iāve thought of and prepared since a while ago. I want try doing things I am able to do one by one.
Q: You seldom had individual activities. How did you do during that time?
Onew: I like resting. Iām doing this work because I want to show a good side. I think I can show a good side for as long as the recharge time I have. I will do it (individual activity) when thereās a good opportunity.
Q: What is your dream right now as a vocalist?
Onew: Iām close to a āplayerā. Iām still embarrassed to call myself an artist. But if I have to take it like that then it starts making me think a lot. There is time when itās good to think a lot. I still donāt know when can I show what Iāve perpared perfectly.
Q: What are the differences between a āplayerā and an artist?
Onew: These days I think back about my childhood dream, when I was young I vaguely thought I would write lyrics and compose songs, win music awards, and deliver good songs. Then I got a really good opportunity and debuted as an idol. At first I was very awkward when taking photos. But after experiencing it many times it became an unexpected skill that I discovered.
Q: Taking photos? I didnāt feel the awkwardness at all. You seem so relaxed.
Onew: The atmosphere this time is very good so I did it comfortably. Haha. I think the discovery itself is really good. But it would be good if I could give suggestion on the composition and the color. I still donāt have that kind of sense yet. I think thatās what makes an artist and a player different?
Q: Articles of you joining <Age of Youth> cast were released two days before departing. Did you get to know the joy of acting from appearing on <Descendant of The Sun>?
Onew: I liked the drama filming set. I liked it especially because I got a long time to wait. I think it was fun. I want to do well on my 2nd project.
Q: What is Onew's interest these days?
Onew: I go fishing when I have time. Since I need a time for myself⦠It makes me feel good taking time to think and relax.
Q: You know that it is ātaking timeā.
Onew: Itās true. I shouldāve caught yellow pin tuna in Maldives!
Q: Iām surprised you know underwater animals of Maldives. Lemon shark, tortoise, stingray⦠You call them like theyāre your long time friends.
Onew: This place is full of beautiful fish. They are very cute that I kept thinking it would be great if I had an aquarium in my house. When I saw them swimming freely in the water, I thought, āDo they even have problems?ā
Q: What are you going to say to the members when you come back?
Onew: I think it will be good to be like right now. And it will be like that. We understand each other even though we donāt say anything and even if we do, we all understand and acknowledge each other. Thatās how our relationship is like. Itās nice.

(T/N: Please note that there might be something lost / errors in the translation. Thank you and enjoy!)
Q: Ma Dong Seok who filmed movie <Two Men> together assured that āMinho is growing up to be a great actorā and audiences left a review, saying āI went to see SHINee Minho but ended up discovering actor Choi Minhoā. How do you feel at that?
A: Itās a compliment to me as a rookie actor. Thus, it makes me know that there are still many ways for me to go through in the future. There are a lot who say that my gaze was different in the movie and I also felt that it was different when I filmed <Two Men>. I studied Jinilās character as human Choi Minho instead of SHINee Minho, and I worked hard to express that emotion. Iāve become a bit more mature as an actor through <Two Men>.
Q: I heard that you learned how to smoke and curse which youāve never done before during the filming of <Two Men>. Did you manage to quench your thirst for a new character?
A: Come to think of it, <Two Men>ās Jinil is very different from the characters Iāve played until now. Since Iāve never tried a role of runaway teenager and poverty-stricken man, it wasnāt easy to express the mentality. I worked hard, learned how to smoke according to the script, and worked hard on how to make my way of eating be Jinil-like during eating scene. With movies, I think I need to pay attention to small details in order for the audiences to be able to understand the flow of a character. Even with not strong characters as well, itās an actorās job to be able to express and figure out something new in the given character. Itās my goal to be an actor who shows a new and unique character through the given character.
Q: Is there any similarity between <Two Men>ās Jinil and Choi Minho?
A: Jinil is a man who would do everything to protect the one he loves. Although he lives in poverty, he protects the one he loves, and violently struggles to survive. I could relate to his sense of responsibility. I tried planting my sense of responsibility to understand, study, and express Jinilās inner side in detail.
Q: The āTwo Menā in my life are?
A: My father and my hyung. During my childhood days, I used to fight with hyung even when our eyes met, and we caused trouble a lot. Whatās fascinating is, we become closer and friendly as we grow up. Although weāre family, heās also like a friend. I think brothers relationship is funny. My father came to <Two Men> premiere and said to me, āYouāve worked hardā (laughs). I actually didnāt have a lot of memories with my father when I was young. He was always exceptionally busy being a soccer player, he became a coach right after he retired from being a soccer player, and he has lived without rest as a soccer manager. Since Iām also a public figure just like my father, I became curious with how my father was like during his twenties. I think he wasnāt that different from me.
Q: You said in an interview, āMy actual dream is to be Choi Yun-kyum's fan foreverā
A: What his colleagues and players said about my father is, āHeās a great personā, āI respect himā, and I think my father is a cool man. I also want to be a man who receives recognition from my colleagues, and an admirable man to my juniors. I always want to be a supportive son and a reliable representative to my father.
Q: Words that you hear the most from the father that you admire?
A: He told me, āListen to your mother wellā, āListen to your mother and there wonāt be any bad thingsā (laughs).
Q: To editors, an interviewee is like one book and a teacher. To actors, the fellow actors who act together in each project can be like their teacher. You started with <Drama Special - Pianist> (2010), then continued with <To The Beautiful You> (2012), <Medical Top Team> (2013), <Because Itās The First Time> (2015), <Canola> (2016), and recently with <Two Men>, <Hwarang>. Is there any development point as an actor in yourself while working with different kinds of actors?
A: Ma Dong Seok hyung-nim is a veteran. He knows well about how the flow of movie works. With movies, we also shoot the latter half of the movie when weāre filming the 1st half of the movie. We canāt shoot it in order. Itās like in we're running on the 1st half , then play on the 2nd half, and be back to the 1st half in soccer. Itās not easy for rookie actors not to miss the flow. Ma Dong Seok knows that kind of flow very well and he always helped me to be able to make me set foot vigorously. He gave me strength. On <To The Beautiful You> and <Hwarang> I got to experience āchemistryā with my same age friends, so they were good. Ā I receive influence from my seniors and colleagues and create synergy. Even though there are things that I still feel regretful with, I enjoy acting. I also want to be an actor that can give influence to others someday.
Q: Idol stars always have prejudice following them when it comes to acting. However, there should be advantages of doing music and acting at the same time.
A: There are a lot of people who are worried and asked me if itās hard to do acting and music at the same time. They also ask me which one do I like more between acting and music. I always answer them, āI like both and they are difficultā. Thereās a day when Iām excited to stand on the stage, and thereās also a day when Iām on filming site with pounding heart. Whatās clear to me is that I gain great synergy when doing music and acting simultaneously. I need to be able to catch peopleās attention when Ā it comes to standing on stage and facing the audience. Becaue thousands of audiences are observing SHINee Minhoās every gestures, expression, and gaze, so I should be able to dominate their eyes. This experience helps me a lot with acting. Iām with around 30 to 40 staff on filming site, but through camera lens, I think of seeing thousands and tens of thousands of people. I work hard on trying to show my charisma and conveying my emotions. On the other hand, the emotions I express when Iām on stage as SHINee come from what I feel when Iām acting as an actor. I think as I come and go as both actor and singer, my emotion's width has become wider. Iāve stood on a lot of stages, and had quite several projects. Iām still standing on the stage, and every time I start a new project I get to experience new emotions. For now I still have rooms for emotions which I still donāt know yet, and I will try to assure that I can open those doors through my effort.
Q: SHINee is already on their 9th year. When was your happiest moment?
A: Ah! Itās really a lot. I remember our concert. We stand on the stage from the help of many staffs and managers, but I think of my fans from the beginning and the end of SHINeeās performance. I believe that the completeness of SHINeeās stage should be done by the members and all fans together. I recall the memories when I practiced and laughed with the members in practice room. Shouldnāt it be a happy moment when we enjoy doing a work that we like with the people that we like? These days, SHINee are happy.
Q: Is there anything that you still arenāt accustomed to when living as an idol?
A: Itās having myself decorated. I still find it awkward to wear cool outfit and put on makeup. I originally have no interest in having myself decorated. Stress? Maybe itās because Iām a simple person that I just sleep it off and forget it all.
Q: Fans call you āThird Floor Fatherā, āChoi Tenderheartā. What is a genuine celebrity like according to Choi Minho?
A: I think itās a person who is back to basics, tries his best on every moment, and knows how to draw a result. A man who is responsible in what he says and his choices, and a man who receives recognition and admiration are cool. Isnāt genuine celebrity a person who is not getting swayed by both good and bad things and stays true to his own identity?
Q: I wonder if celebrity also has some kind of āaddictionā. What are you into these days?
A: Working out. When thereās time I do weight training and move my body. Iām now in my 9th year since debut. Back then when I was busy I only focused on work because I needed to build up my experience. So now Iām thinking I should find a spare time in the midst of my busy schedule. I was pretty busy in 2016, but I worked out in my spare time, played soccer, basketball, and golf a bit. I think Iām the type who would recharge myself by moving my body the more I get busy. Once in a while I would rest and not doing anything like watching TV for a whole day. I donāt really enjoy games, probably only āWinning Elevenā? I want to be a ābookwormā, but too bad I didnāt read a lot.
Q: Youāll be in your 10th year since debut next year. What do you want to say to hard working Minho?
A: I want to say āYouāve worked hard!ā. Since you're still young, donāt be contented easily right now and I hope you always live your life earnestly. I want to give him a support, āalthough youāve achieved a lot of things and gained many experiences, be more humble, lower yourself, and start afresh.'
Q: What does December 2016 mean to Choi Minhp?
A: It might be because I get cold easily that I like Summer. However, this yearās December is special. It was the busiest year throughout my life. I had Japan tour right after I finished movie filming, I had SHINee concert after my drama ended, and we also released two albums. Although I was busy, I gained a lot of experiences. Thus, it became a year of my development.

What do you think about the most these days?
Minho: Positive energy. Iāve been thinking of having good thoughts and be good-natured.
Is there any artists or fields that youāre paying attention to lately?
Minho: These days I listen to Danish band Lukas Grahamās songs a lot. To say that performance is important, as someone whose job is performing, I found it charming that they captivated my eyes and ears only by their music. Iāve started thinking that I want to captivate people only by my voice.
I will talk about your item choice. You chose camera?
Minho: Itās the camera I bought in 2012. I used it a lot when I had photography directing lesson in university. I bought the camera with a friend who worked together with me. I took photos using this camera, and both the composition and the picture turned out different from what I have thought inside my head. Iāve taken photos using this camera many times and have made videos. Iām very contented.
Is there any exceptional feeling or something different when you use this camera?
Minho: Iāve got to know that the scenes and views I discover become different when using this camera. Iāve got to know the difference between the ones I take and the real ones. I might say that Iāve got to know the fun of seeing the world through lens. Iāve learned various views.
Do you also use the camera everyday?
Minho: I canāt do that these days. I use my phone to take photographs and I use the camera mostly to shoot videos. I donāt just shoot casually. When I have time, I plan it with my friends in advance and make some preparations with my friends to shoot something. I shot a short video, it will be uploaded to Vimeo when itās finished. I think *making arrangement is important.
Itās a very productive hobby, though?
Minho: I work quite hard once Iāve come up with a story to film. Since itās not a work that needs to rush, Iāve become more attached to it. Iāve made around six to seven works. Actually there are many times when weāre running out of times although we filmed for a whole day. I did a lot of additional filmings. I did the music and video editing all by myself so time went by so fast.
The fact that other people turn their job into a hobby. Isnāt that great?
Minho: I start doing it because itās fun. There was also a time when I created the story after I decided the music first, and I do it because it gives off a unique feeling. The interesting points are different each time. Surely, the joy when we finished one project becomes the strongest point and charm.
Whatās the work that you like the most?
Minho: Itās my school graduation project. I created my own story and worked very hard on it. It captures conflicting feelings between my everyday self and my inner self. The story is about one who thought heās been looking at himself in the mirror after all this time, but turned out itās another person and not him in the mirror. When I edited the ending scene, it didnāt turn out the way I wanted so I did additional filmings several times. I became attached to it the most when I finished it.
Is there any plans of having collaborations on short films or music videos or some directing in the future?
Minho: Yes. Although itās not yet a definite plan, Iād like to try if thereās a chance.
In most cases with camera, people would upgrade their camera when thereās a new model. Do you plan to do the same thing with your camera? Or do you want to keep it?
Minho: Camera is divided into body and lens. I think itās nice to follow the trend and get the body upgraded for the better performance. But I like this lens just right. I need to feel familiar with it even with the same lens. Rather than using a new product and trying to adapt, this lens has grasped the essential points and I like using it. It just feels right to me.
Have you ever revealed this camera to the fans?
Minho: I guess I havenāt done it. I just revealed it on this calendar.
Where is the cameraās home?
Minho: Since the lens and body need to be taken care of, I let my friend to take care of it. I donāt want it to be covered in dust in my house. So I handed it over to a friend whose job is a video maker in order for it to be used.
What do you usually do when you canāt make time to make videos?
Minho: I like sports. I like ball games ones, such as soccer and basketball.
What do you want to do the most with the members when you all have time?
Minho: I want to travel with the members together. We still havenāt done it together. I want to spend a good time with the members. Ā
(T/NāØ*: Minho used Ā word āMise-en-ScĆØneā here, itās one of film studies term which refers to the arrangement before the camera rolls. (source: wikipedia))

[TRANS] 161208 SHINeeās Choi Minho - Media Interview (3)
(T/N: Please note that there might be something lost / errors in the translation. Thank you and enjoy!)
āI should lean towards love more than work, right?ā, itās a word by one of SHINee members, actor Choi Minho(25), who acted as a man who is willing to lay down his life for love.
In āTwo Menā, Choi Minho acted as a runaway teenage leader Jin-il, a genuine man who is willing to do anything for her girlfriend Gayoung. On 30th last month, I asked Minho about his dating style as his acting in the movie was impressive.
Opening up, Choi Minho said, āIf I like someone, I will behave the same (T/N: as Jin-il), but Iām rather rational than emotionalā. He continued, āIf Jin-il soak up his emotions, I still think rationally when I pour out my feelings. However, if you ask me to choose between work and love, and even if I think that both are important, my actions lean towards love moreā.
The next part is one-on-one interview with Choi Minho.
(āTwo Menā) received positive reviews at BIFF, but Iām curious with your feelings upon the movie premiere.
Minho: Iām happy. Actually, I was very curious. I was curious about how the movie would turn out when I received the scenario. Iām still stunned that the movie was released. Actually, there are acting parts which I feel lacking. I was curious to portray things I donāt have in myself as Jin-il.
How did you spend your teenage days in real life?
Minho:Ā I was the complete opposite of Jin-il. Thus, I was intrigued with how Iād portray him. The character is rough, so Iām curious about how I express it with my face. It was my aim not to look awkward when I smoked, cursed, and spit. Fortunately, they said I didnāt look awkward. (Laughs) It is like an accomplishment. Iām quite satisfied.
It seems that you spent very proper school days, and your father is Gangwon FC manager Choi Yoon Kyum. Was he strict at home?
Minho:Ā When I was young, I thought to myself that I should play sports too since my father played sports. From the moment I remember things, I grew up looking at my father running on the soccer field. Even with his life as a coach or manager, it was vivid to think that I should became a soccer player since my father also played sports, but turns out he disapproved of it. He told me not to become a soccer player. I think that was the time he scolded me this hard. Aside from that, he has never been this strict. He only scolded me when I lied or behaved badly. My mother was rather strict. (Laughs)
You dreamed of being a soccer player when you were a kid, so since when did you think of acting?
Minho:Ā I thought that I wanted to do acting for the first time when I was in middle school. Because I wasnāt allowed to become a soccer player, I seemed to have lost that dream. I got casted when I didnāt even think of what I should do. I took audition, and thatās when I started dreaming of being an actor. At first, I received more acting lessons than dancing and singing lessons. I thought it would be hard for me to debut as SHINee because I lacked of skills, but it seemed that I debuted quickly. I found SNSD noonas debut and appeared on TV fascinating. It was a hard time during early days after debut. Actually my mother strongly objected me to be a celebrity. Itās my father who objected me to be a soccer player. When I told my father that I will be a celebrity, he thought, āTry it. You may quit eventuallyā. And my mother said, āThatās an absurd dreamā, but when I entered high school I got permission then I started practicing and debuted. Looking back, I went through slump during my early debut days. I first thought, āWhy did I debut?ā. I couldnāt dance nor sing, and I couldnāt say anything in variety shows. Before debut, Iām good at talking and confident, but standing in front of public as a celebrity isnāt an easy job. However, as the time passes, I thought to myself that I did well for debuting early. It was a valuable experience when I try to look back at it. Itās because I was able to learn early.
Instead of celebrity Choi Minho, whatās your personality as just Choi Minho?
Minho:Ā I have leadership personality. I like to organize things and is also nosy. (Laughs). I also led my friends when I was with them. During school days, rathen than being a class president, I was a head of P.E. I was a character whoās confident at things I have confidence at. I personally thought I have leadership in those.
How was your chemistry with Ma Dong-seok?
Minho:Ā I knew him before and I got closer through āTwo Menā. I was contemplating a lot with my company before I decided to play. That time I got a call from (Ma) Dong-seok hyungnim. He said, āBefore thinking about your company, do you really want to do it?ā. Then I told him that I wanted to do it so much, he said āI admired your willā. That time I told my company to quickly agree and sign it. In a way, my decision to appear in the movie gave big strength to me.
Did your parents and SHINee members watch the movie?
Minho: My mother asked me why I didnāt tell her that I smoked and got beaten up in the movie. She said, āMy heart is weak, why didnāt you tell me in advance?ā. (laughs) My father was blunt and said to me, āYouāve been through a lot. You did wellā. SHINee members had overseas schedule so only Onew hyung watched the movie. He said it very sincerely, āYou did well. Iām proud that youāre my younger brother (dongsaeng)ā. It made me really happy. Those supporting words gave big strength to me. Yoona noona and Sooyoung noona from SNSD watched the movie. I knew them well since before I debuted, and they watched the movie. Even though they were uneasy because my character in the movie might damage my image, they complimented me. They didnāt know the movie was noir, but they said it suit me well.
Your fans might be shocked watching it.Ā
Minho:Ā I think theyāll be surprised rather than shocked. I didnāt know whether fans who watched it in Busan in advance were shocked. I didnāt hear any reactions. When they came to get a sign, they just quietly said āI watched your movie wellā. And they had surprised face when they said, āI watched Two Menā. An acting is just an acting, you know.

[TRANS] 161202 SHINeeās Choi Minho - Media Interview (2)
161202 - An Interview that can make you fall for āTwo Menāās actor Choi Minho
(T/N: Please note that there might be something lost / errors in the translation. Thank you and enjoy!)
Iām captivated by actor Choi Minho (25). Heās a rookie actor that is full of passion. I didnāt feel any impression of āpretense?ā āintention to look nice?ā at all from him. Iām not the type whoās into 1 question and 1 answer interview, but his will to wholly deliver the answers loaded the actor Choi Minho interview as it is. It might be not entertaining, but it might make us fall for Minhoās charm fully.
Q: The role of āTwo Menā Jin-il shows a completely different side of Choi Minho. Iām curious with fansā reactions.
āI think there are fans who are surprised. There are also fans who like the new side of me. There are also those who are sad that the movie is an R-19 movie. I actually didnāt know that itās labeled as an R-19 movie.ā
Q: Isnāt it good to lower the rating (T/N: of the movie) so that you can see more audience and more SHINee fans?
āActually we also shot the adjusted version of strong scenes and dialogues, but we considered this version for the sake of the movieās completion. So I prefer to go with the stronger contents.ā
Q: But fans mustāve liked the soft Minho.
āI suppose itās true? But I heard from the people who saw the movie that they were touched and feeling emphaty towards Jin-il who is protective of his girlfriend. They said, āI wish there could be a boyfriend like himā? (Laughs) I actually saw anger and sadness more than mellowness when I looked at the scenario before. Itās good that there were also mellow parts. I think each person will have different views about it.ā
āTwo Menā was released on the 30th last month, which had 25000 audience watched the movie (T/N: on that day). Itās a story about two men whoās having poverty-stricken lives fighting desperately for their beloved ones. Ma Dong-seok plays the role of Hyung-seok, an illegal karaoke owner whose life went downward because of his private loan, Choi Minho plays the role of Jin-il, a loyal leader of teenage runaway group who lives together with his friends. In order to portray the role of teenage runaway, he learned how to smoke then quit.
Q: It seems that the score is a bit low.
āI think the rough feel that (Ma) Dongseok hyung-nim and I put on the poster wouldnāt appeal to people who arenāt into crime genre. A diverse genre may not receive love. Itās already the 2nd day since the movieās premiere. Although itās too bad, I wish for another thing. There are a lot of cases in which blockbuster (movies) have a good result and become an issue. I also like blockbusters, but I have an ambition that Korean movies with diverse genre can stay showing in theaters for a bit longer. It may be a great ambition, but Iād like to let people remember that this kind of movie also exists.ā
Q: Being invited to Busan International Film Festival can be said as being acknowledged. There are a lot of people from film industry who saw Choi Minhoās acting again. Especially since itās his first film in which heās the main. Itās satisfying enough for that.
āFirst of all, Iām contented for receiving good reviews. I got surprised when I came to Busan. The dream Iāve had since I was young unexpectedly came true, so I thought āWhat is this feeling. Itās the first time Iām feeling itā. Iāve stood at red carpets many times, but the feeling was completely different. I could feel that my self development has increased by one level. Plus, itās not that the movie has been taken down from theaters. I like the word āItās not the end until it endsā. I always think itās possible to make a turnover. I know that thereās a fight within ourselves when trying to decide which direction weād like to take in life. Acting and coming onstage are also like that, and I also felt it when I play sports.ā
Q: You have a unique love for movies. Were you this firm with your thoughts about acting since young?
āIāve thought of acting a lot since I was young. I first started acting on dramas and already had few works, then I got curious of how itād be like to be in a movie and wanted act in one. I started participating in a movie for the first time last year and I was a bit surprised at its difference from drama. I feel a movie as one assembly. I also feel that even if the acting is the same, the tone is very different. I thought, āAh, I still have a long way to goā. Itās my first time having an interview for a movie, so there must be movie journalists who donāt know me. It made me feel that I should do my work more actively and diligently.ā
Q: Do you take movie auditions a lot? Did you also participate in the audition for āTwo Menā?
āWith āTwo Menā, it was more like a meeting than an audition. Before, I took camera test and reading, but it became a failure at the end. I wondered if the director had prejudice about me being an idol. I felt if the acting I showed in dramas could get recognition, the director could be on my side despite the idol title. I felt burdened because the result wasnāt good. If you were asking whether I was upset, rather than being upset, I personally would think that it was a shame. I donāt feel resentful at all (Laughs). But that was good. I thought a lot from that process. When I felt shaken a lot by that time, I thought āAh so theyāre trying to make me become strongerā. I actually had a mental breakdown because I failed at the reading. I remember it was in 2013, I was thinking of appearing in a movie. I emptied out my schedules for 4-5 months, but I heard a ānoā so I wasnāt able to do anything. I had a lot of times, yet I didnāt want to travel, and I just stayed at home absent-mindedly. I also had no appetite to eat. I was able to naturally forget all that when I met people and I felt better as time passed by. Iām thankful for that. I wouldāve continued walking down the path of celebrity easily if not for that time. I wouldnāt get a chance to make a drastic growth. I thought that Iāve walked down many paths, but I figured out that I actually havenāt.ā
Q: There may be fans who are sad for not being able to see the handsome face completely?
āI probably appeared with that face only from the beginning for 10 minutes. However, I liked that better. That image was unfamiliar, but at some point I adapted to heavily bruised face. To the point I asked the makeup artist noona, āCan you draw it deeper here?ā (Laughs)ā
Q: In the movie, you look completely different from the usual Choi Minho. It seems like a firm difference.
"I'm also shocked to see myself appeared on the big screen with different personalities. It makes me learn about new things, and I was able to perceive things which I wasn't sure of knowing. It's good to upgrade the image I've had before, but finding out about a new piece is like discovering a new world. Ā Of course it's still a very weak piece, but coming out with thoughts on how to pull it off is good."
Q: Since it's your newfound image, the director must be thankful to know that?
"I actually told (T/N: the director) that I really wanted to do it when I first received the script. The first thing was my curiousity, 'How will I appear if I do this?', The second was my worry and anxiety, and the third one was my other curiousity, 'Why did the scenario come to me? Why did it come round and round to me? Does the director not know about my image?'. In fact, only bright and lively roles were coming to me. It was unexpected. When I met the director, he said that Jin-il's image was drawn after he saw the image I've had in one of my pictorials. He has drawn other characters, but he only couldn't draw Jin-il until he was inspired by the pictorial. I was pretty surprised. What people usually think when they saw me was just a youthful image, but this one seems different (Laughs). I heard it after I filmed the movie, that people said my atmosphere turned different when I had a photoshoot. They said my youthful side disappeared, 'I've never felt a *beautiful mess image from you, but now I feel it.' It's fascinating since I also think he same.ā
Q: In other interview you said something that sounds like you're regretful with your acting in 'To The Beautiful You'
āAt that time I thought I've done my best. There were a lot of critics so it was a shame. It's good to think that I have to accept those with modesty. I dwelled on my thoughts, 'How would I do if I didn't hear those words?'. I think I needed that past in order to make me become who Iām now. There are people who give critics, but I want to say 'Even if I've got criticized, it's not now'. Saying, 'I've done well, why can't people understand' is rather full of bluff, so I wouldn't want to say that. Ā I have to be honest and embrace it humbly.ā
āActually I only became a main character when I started acting. The look from when I become a main character then go to a supporting character is different. The viewpoint itself is completely different. Iāve had to know that thereās viewpoint difference between a main cast looking at the supporting cast, anda supporting cast looking at the main cast. I get to know why people who go up gradually from the bottom are good at acting. I was aware that if we did well on our own, we could stand out by ourselves. I got lucky that I got a main role at the first time, but I got to learn later on as to why I got lucky. As the time passes, I've got to think and learn a lot about not making my acting look dull.ā
Q: This time you've shown good acting, so I think you may only get this kind of role.
āIt seems like a homework to break the stereotype, but I will think it's good at first if it looks like that. That means they acknowledge me and can rely on me. I'll be glad and would really like it to make a step one by one. Fortunately, I participated in the drama 'Hwarang' and my character is pure, lively, and silly. Heās a character who does actions without thinking. The pre-production drama filming has ended. I think you'll be able to see my new look again.ā
Q: You've been consistently acting. You must be busy with singing and dancing practices for SHINee activities. What's your tips for being able to consistently act?
āItās true that thereās a time limit. Unlike the people who only focus on acting, I have to do two things simultaneously. As a result, it pushes me to be more concentrated. Iām the kind who has strong stamina. Itās actually an advantage. Eventhough I have strong stamina, Iād like to say itās about a willpower difference. I know how much should I focus on certain situations. Iāve got pull out a great focus on site and on tight situations. I have the strength that makes me work hard and stay focused even if I canāt sleep. People would say āBut then youāll dieā, but I think itās nice. Itās because of the tension that makes it possible.ā
Q: Iām also curious with your chemistry with actor Ma Dong Seok.
āI have met hyung at private occasions and became close. I felt scared when I met him for the first time, but heās actually warm and nice. You can say thereās a twist. Hahaha. He is very thoughtful, heās considerate of juniors, and he is very open-minded. Theyāre (T/N: the traits) broader than hyungās body. Iāve learned a lot from him at the filming site this time. Hyung is a veteran in action scenes and he knows all of the flows. He has many acting experiences in a lot of productions. He was able to explain those in words. It felt like I received a gift that I couldnāt buy somewhere. You wanted me to explain it in details? Hm, Iām not going to tell anyone (Laughs).ā
Q: These days, 1st generation idols such as Sechs Kies, H.O.T, etc are making TV appearances again. What do you think about the comeback of best idols in the past as a present idol?
āI think itās very wonderful and great. The seniors are wonderful but I think the fans are wonderful as well. Theyāre loyal. Our fans are also the people who give us strength and make us stand on the stage. Fansā support create strength that didnāt exist before. The seniors must be tired and exhausted, but they are touched for the fans who have waited. Seeing them being active makes me want to be active for a long time as well. As the time goes and the future comes, I want our team to be remembered for a long time. Iām confident that we can do that too. I want to make the close distance with fans become closer. And I donāt want to break that.ā
Q: You originally dreamed of being a soccer player. Have you ever regretted debuting as an idol?
āI had a lot of regrets for two years after debut. āShould I quit now?ā I thought of that everyday. Iām the kind of person whoās confident, but I debuted without having any talent. Because of that situation I had no confidence in singing nor dancing. Yet those are what I had to show when I stood on stage, I couldnāt say anything during interviews, and I felt daunted. I had regrets at that time, but there were fans who cheered for me at that time. Actually there are many times when I leaned on the members, but the times which I appeared on variety shows alone erased those feelings and thoughts. All of those were lifted by holding onto determination of doing well and working hard. I prepared and put an effort, so I gained confidence. Now I think my early debut days were the most precious and valuable experience to me. Perhaps if I went back to that time and had someone asked me, āDo you want to debut?ā, I would answer āOf course. I will do it soonerā.ā
Choi Minho isnāt haughty. Itās very remarkable of him for not emphasizing himself as neither an actor nor a singer. After the interview, he responded to the reporter who said to him āI received positive energyā by saying, āAs a celebrity, thereās nothing better than giving positive, hopeful, and bright energy to other people.ā His mind and thoughts are all positive. He doesnāt get into any scandal. Ā Heās very thorough and upright, āIām just not different from any other son who gets scolded for waking up late at home, and gets scolded for not eating.ā I want to meet him in his next project as an actor soon.

[TRANS] 161201 SHINeeās Choi Minho - Media Interview (1)
(T/N: Please note that there might be something lost / errors in the translation. Thank you and enjoy!)
He gave off a āwell-raised young manā vibe with his good manners, politeness, and the way he answers each question with sincerity. Itās a story about 25 years old Choi Minho of 9 years idol group SHINee.
In āTwo Menā, Choi Minho appeared as a rough and defiant runaway teenage boy Jin-il. His role is a ātough guyā who knows how to devote himself to his beloved girlfriend and not be discouraged by threatening adults. Itās the opposite of what he usually shows, and itās far from an ideal image. Yet, thereās no awkwardness at all. As a result, he unfolded natural acting and an appraisal of āChoi Minhoās rediscoveryā came out.
Choi Minho said, āAlthough itās a pity that the first day premiere score was lower than I expected, there are many positive reviews about my acting so Iām glad that the effort Iāve put all these time has been acknowledged.ā
āTwo Menā is a low-budget movie in which the production costed 600 million won. Itās an R-19 movie so SHINeeās teenage fans canāt see it.
Why is that Choi Minhoās acting, which is no different from rookie actors, isnāt awkward and is rather experienced in Chungmu-ro*.
He who stepped into showbiz when he was a teenager, as well as other idol groups, figured out their career life so early.
āIāve debuted since I was young, so I got to know things that my peers wouldnāt know (T/N: at their age). Thus, I became a precocious child. In the mean time, I felt the distace between me and my friends who were looking for jobs, thinking about grades, and returning from military service when I met them.ā
Choi Minho who is always bright and lively actually went through a slump and experienced inner struggle. He said that he was able to overcome and break the mold only three years ago.
āMy parents were against me working as a celebrity, so I debuted without being able to train properly compared to the other members. Then I personally thought that my dancing and singing skills were lacking. My confidence fell down and that moment was naturally a drawback."
Choi Minhoās father, Choi Yun-kyum (54), is a professional soccer coach of Gangwon FC. Choi Minho wanted to be a soccer player since he was young, but his father was extremely against him going down the rugged path of soccer. Therefore, he soon abandoned the dream. His mother wished his son could just have an ordinary life rather than being a celebrity.
āI felt that my heart became a bit comfortable because I stood in front of thousdands of fans at the first concert after my debut. I went to variety shows since then and started acting since 2010. I tried to become stronger by doing individual activities. Since then, Iāve found my composure and adroitness when I acted."
Choi Minho said his perfectionism is strong. This personality is a strength that made Choi Minho today, but also a hindrance.
āBack then, the character of SHINeeās Minho was built to only show a perfect image. I think I lived up feeling strained for 365 days because I did not want to show my weakness. Looking back to those days, I had been only showing celebrity Choi Minho instead of human Choi Minho.ā
Afterwards, he toned down himself a lot, and he started showing his true self and found composure.
Choi Minho is still optimistic. He has a personality that enjoys challenges. Itās his goal to make the people in Chungmu-ro* who carry āAn actor who started off as an idol isn't allowedā prejudice turn to his side. Heās putting the same emphasis on singer and acting activities, but heās now drawing the image of actor Choi Minho in ten years.
āThe image in my mid-30s? I want to be an actor who can convey good energy and positivity to people. When that time comes, Iāll pick up a lot of masterpieces in life."
He was asked to give advice to a lot of young juniors who dream of becoming an idol. Choi Minho contemplated for a while.
āThinking about work, I began earlier than others when it comes to debuting at young age. Since I wasnāt able to do things I shouldāve enjoyed at that age, it would be good if you can debut after you grow up a bit so you can do enjoyable things as humans. I also thought Iāve grown up when I do my work, yet it was a defective growth when trying to look back.ā

Q: Jonghyun was chosen as āSinger of The Yearā on āGQ AWARDSā in December 2015 issue.
Jonghyun: I saw it. Thank you. I felt uneasy because it was my first solo, but there are a lot of good feedback so I got to have self-confidence. Self-dignity is personal feeling. Nevertheless, I think external factor has a big influence to a person who does art.
Q: Is Jonghyun a person with high self-dignity?
Jonghyun: I think thereās moment when the answer to that is ātrueā. Iām not a person who is always full of self-dignity throughout 365 days. People tend to move energetically through their inferiority complex. Iām the type who overcome my self-dignity falling down by doing that.
Q: The time when your self-dignity is at its peak?
Jonghyun: My inferiority complex arises when I see people doing well. Then when I made that as an inspiration, I have faith in my self. Of course itād be great if my works always come out as the best, but since there are impossibilities from the system, itās when a work which passes my standard point comes out.
Q: What is your standard point?
Jonghyun: 70 points. Itās a point thatās made for myself, so it can make me feel uneasy if I set it high. āAm I indulging myself?ā. Iāve never thought my albums deserved 100 points. Instead, I work hard on how to make the track list and what kind of atmosphere that I want to express to be matched.
Q: Youāve released three albums until now. Have you ever thought of receiving most-talked Daesang? (T/N: A grand awards of having his work being most-talked)
Jonghyun: I have confidence in it. Although public success is important, I think having my work being most-talked work is more artistic. The fact that people who listen to my music wants to talk about many things about it have made my work seem artistic. I always work hard to create that.
Q: When I write āGQ AWARDSā, Iāve wished for some album to receive most-talked Daesang one more time. But then idolās background carries different content.
Jonghyun: Platform in Korean idols have a lot of meanings. First is lucky people. Then catchy people? Prepared people? Thus, there are also kids who only attracted peopleās eyes at the right time. I donāt feel bad about it. Since I have faith in myself.
Q: I listened to both <BASE> and its extension, the first album released this year <She Is>.
Jonghyun: Albums which are seen as one set are nice, but I wanted to make albums that can be appreciated like a book. Although the lyrics arenāt connected, there is feels or other parts that keep making it connected. That has been my first priority. Then I created another concept from there. Thatās <BASE>ās extension. I wanted to showcase my music color just like <BASE> and tried to act as one man. Thatās the reason why I made <She Is> not having breakup song. I put contents of falling in love and dramatically made the romance worked out. Iāve thought a lot about the track list.
Q: The composition is especially similar. After starting out with āPopā song, you set a peak with Deezās song (āNEONā and āAURORAā) on both albums. Then on <BASE>, there are famous Underdogs, Bryan-Michael Cox who participated in 2nd half of <She Is>. Itās somewhat typical but youāre true to your genre.
Jonghyun: I make a lot of planning on the introduction. Itās pretty tight. Thatās how Iām like when I work. Iām pretty loosened outside that. Iām the type who is obsessive like a crazy person when Iām working. I think all artists are having that kind of disorder. It does affect me in a good way.
Q: Have you ever felt loosened when focusing?
Jonghyun: I donāt feel any difference. Itās because Iāve always lived like this. The people who work with me said there are parts they become careful of because Iām very sharp. Itās a character that creates tension that canāt be ignored?
Q: What kind of parts do you usually take charge in a group work?
Jonghyun: I made many songs that were created early-on and made them into a track. These days I do more whole-producing or write melody lines. Creating its own small nuance, then thinking whether I should build up the song? Those kind of stuff. I have great ambition in producing. I need to set up standard and decide which direction is the song going to. I think of those as fighting with my nerve. Being on stage, meeting people, and also producing music with others. If I really work hard in order not to lose to each other, it will create synergy and radiate energy.
Q: Is having interview also fighting with your nerves?
Jonghyun: Yes. But I donāt think of winning. When I give off this much of energy, I believe the other party will feel nervous and try to do well. Itās a good nerve. Thus, I also focus during interview. Iām also decisive when choosing words. I donāt usually use words that are on dictionary.
Q: Is there any formal expression that you often use?
Jonghyun: Physical. It carries a lot of meaning. It can be used to talk about something about our mind that is out of reach, or something thatās related to time. For example, when I have questions like āUntil when are SHINee going to be together?ā, I answer āWe will always be together as weāre physically feasible.ā If one person suddenly migrates then it canāt be helped that we (T/N: as a group) would physically fall down.
Q: It sounds to me that you have confidence unless thereās no physical disruption.
Jonghyun: Self-assurance is the most important in order to believe that weāre a great person. People might assume that I have high self-dignity based on what I said earlier, but my inferiority complex is actually high. I even felt inferiority complex from Chris Brown when I was a trainee.
Q: Isnāt it too far?
Jonghyun: It is far. Itās because of my self-dignity that I can also feel my inferiority. While practicing, I thought itāsĀ greatĀ that Chris Brown debuted around the same age as me, but what am I doing?Ā
Q: Who are the people that give you the biggest inferiority?
Jonghyun: My family. My mother is a great person. She went to university when I was in middle school. She kept me motivated to get a grip of myself, that I canāt just stay like this. She didnāt use words, but actions. She has never gotten angry at me. I took GED exam, then I tried to explain my mother when I decided to drop out from school. That time, she told me that she trusted me. That is the first time she put trust in me.
Q: How did you explain?
Jonghyun: I donāt just say āI donāt want to go to school, I want to make musicā, I really pointed out my reasons of dropping out from school and what am I going to do after that. That was on my first year of high school? People around me told me not to do that, but my mother trusted me. Until now, Iāve lived out things that have taught me, and the way of giving trust to each other.
Q: Was 17 years old Jonghyun already a decisive person?
Jonghyun: Itās about future. On what age Iām going to get married, and on what age Iām going to graduate. I thought Iād get married when I became 22.
Q: You wrapped up one chapter of your life through full-length album <She Is>, which can lead to a clue to the future. What do you like the most right now?
Jonghyun: Performance. The energy that I give and take from stage. These days, Iām thinking that Iām in the position I deserve on stage. Iām able to use my ideas and derive them to the stage, be it for opening music or video.
Q: If itās SHINee, then we come up with stage right away, but when it comes to Jonghyun, rather than stage, the album comes up first.
Jonghyun: Itās true. Thatās why <She Is> is more of a danceable song. I already wrote the song with thoughts, āThis song will be feasible with any kind of stage directionā. Iāve performed songs from collection album <Story Op.1> before, and I also like that kind of feeling. I will continue making full-length album and collection album separately. I need a lot of time to work on dividing my list of music into two directions. Since Iām not yet tired of working.
Q: What are you going to do if you are tired?
Jonghyun: Iāll find out when that time comes.
Q: I think youāre a person whoād do well on things you donāt want to do?
Jonghyun: Thatās true. There must be reason as to why I donāt want to do it. I will think and work on it.
Q: You said this on your interview with <GQ> 6 years ago, āMy ambition is to be acknowledged by people who like music before 2000 and say that todayās music isnāt musicā. Is that word still valid?
Jonghyun: Of course. Actually I said it that time when I was young so it sounded compelling when I said I wanted to get acknowledged. Thereās no compulsion now. To point out, todayās music is also great, but itās a pity to say that itās not music just because the instruments and platforms have changed. I did say that I wanted to get acknowledged, but now my mindset is I want to let those people know. That itās also beautifulā¦
Q: Youāve become more mature. Jonghyun-sshi.
Jonghyun: It might also be arrogance.

Q: I also interviewed Minho in 2010. Iāve changed a lot since then
Minho: Iāve changed a lot as well. That was 2 years since debut. Compared to that time, Iāve experienced a lot of things and also have mentally become mature.
Q: What kind of experience?
Minho: Not only my work experience, but also my daily life. Even from a really small thing like dinner⦠But if I point out significant thing, itās concert last week. There would be a lot to put it in details.
Q: Do you like to dwell on things?
Minho: I think a lot. Iām the type who picks out which ones were good and which ones were bad based on my standard. Ā
Q: How did you sum up your experiences between 2010 and now?
Minho: I felt that there were things I thought of vaguely from debut, and I started to come up with realization from that. I wonder if the image I show to the people Iām comfortable with can make me become close to public. That is my real image, yet Iām still in fear until now. I wondered if I should tone it down a bit. Since I suddenly came up with realization, there were times when I started to discover myself a bit more.
Q: When was that?
Minho: About 2 or 3 years ago? It isnāt because there was special case. The image I showed to my friend as pre-debut human Choi Minho and the image I showed to people whom I met after debut as SHINee Minho were kind of different. It couldnāt be helped that the people I became close with after debut had prejudice about my image, right? Thus, I had my limit to open my heart. When I couldnāt feel the difference, I met my friends after debut and we started to open up. They saw my attitude and said, āNow you donāt look like SHINeeās Minho. I like human Choi Minho better.ā
Q: From the realization, how did you change Minho?
Minho: Ah, so thatās how I look like when Iām with people Iām comfortable with. I personally find it catchy. I thought to keep remembering that side of me. For example, a new employee can have distinctive behavior in front of his/her director during interview, but he/she canāt act strange. I get to know that I can behave comfortably without being wronged. I canāt make myself comfortable when there are cameras, lightings, and staff on broadcast, but since Iāve discovered the image I feel convenient with, I told myself I should make good use of it. I get to learn how to overcome āawkwardnessā with staff, strategies, and know-hows.
Q: It seems that acting has also become a big help?
Minho: Thatās true. Acting has helped me the most. Iāve become relaxed in front of camera. Of course my debut and the films Iāve acted on has made me become comfortable. Though when I express something, there can be many kinds of thoughts running in my mind.
Q: From the perspective of viewers who arenāt able to look into whatās inside Minhoās heart and are only able to look at Minhoās image from the background, if there is a new defining moment that Minho shows, itās his image from <Because Itās The First Time>
Minho: Hmm⦠You really felt that way, which made me quite surprised. That was the first drama I acted on after I came up with realization which I mentioned before. Whatās fascinating about camera is, although it only captures oneās expression and appearance, it can also read the atmosphere flowing on her/him. <Because Itās The First Time> Teo fits my real age so it was a character who viewed things the same as me. Back then I only wanted to flash my appearance, but now I think I should be more āsolidā.
Q: I started wanting to see more of Minhoās acting. After <Canola> which was premiered on May, there are still more coming. Starting from drama <Hwarang: The Beginning>
Minho: I just finished the filming. It was hard. Traditional clothing canāt absorb sweat so it all ran down to my foot. Whoa, Korea is this hot, Gyeongju is really hot, filming historical drama in summer is really⦠(laughs). I also shot two movies after <Canola>, one of them will be premiered this year and another one will be premiered next year.
Q: Iām looking forward to your indie movie <Two Men> with Ma Dong Seok. Still cut pictures of your bruised face were released.
Minho: I got thirsty for new character. I was lucky that the scenario came to me. If we look at my life and the character respectively, at what point do they intersect? In this movie, the character has the same age and gender as me, and we donāt have anything in common other than that. Thus, I was attracted to it. I wanted to draw myself near the character⦠If you look at how itās a low-budget indie movie.. there are quite strong content on it so I thought I didnāt get permission from my company. I got to express my willingness.
Q: Are you satisfied?
Minho: When I act with seniors, I feel that Iāve fallen behind when it comes to experience. Itās like, when students want to submit a report to our professor, there are students who just submit, who point out essential things and do it easily, and also who understand the professorās tendency and do write a long report. I think those are all experience differences. Seniors have shot many kinds of movie, so I can see that, āAh, seniors know all of these things.ā
Q: Is it exciting these days?
Minho: Itās really interesting. Actually in my case, there are times when I have to act and do my activities as SHINee simultaneously so Iāve thought itād be great if I can focus only on one of them, but these days I want to think oppositely. I think there will be something creative that comes out when I do both things and I personally find it fun that my image when I stand on stage is different from when Iām acting. I think fans really like it. I want to be appealing on that.
Q: Have you ever felt bad because you thought youād do better if you only focused on one?
Minho: Due to that, I should give all my best and put more effort on the given time. Also whatās really fortunate is, since my stamina canāt be lost to anyone else.. Itās at the point where it can be acknowledged as 2nd best in Korea next to Park Jisung. (laughs)
Q: You re-did your awkward rap from the ādark pastā video during early debut days on <SNL Korea> in May last year. Did you remember?
Minho: I thought it was an image which pretended to be mature and tried not to look flawed, which I found cute. If I came back to that time, I mightāve done similar things. Of course it will be different to go to the past with the thoughts Iām having right now. How to put this, if I realized it too fast, I would hate to see it? Finding out everything is not fun.
Q: How do you usually hang out with people youāre close with?
Minho: I just drink with them, and go to TVXQ Changmin-hyungās house at the end. Thatās our pattern. Changmin-hyungās house is the best so itās our ālast trainā. It has its own fun. During year-end 2 years ago, when <Misaeng> was a hit, we dressed up as employees and drank at bar. We also look up restaurants and teahouse across the nation and went there. We do those kind of things.
Q: Do you know term āSambeojiā? Ā
[T/N: āSambeojiā is abbreviation of āSam/ģ¼ā (Three) and Beoji (From word āabeoji/ģė²ģ§ā), which means father]
Minho: I didnāt know, so I asked my fans and they said it means ā3rd floor fatherā. I pay attention to fans on 3rd floor during concert so they gave me the nickname. When fans come to concert, they can get close seats and far seats. Itās pretty random. I want to let fans who are far to go closer, but I canāt so I feel sorry.
Q: There are many stories on internet from people who witnessed your kindness.
Minho: Itās my parents influence. They always tell me to āBe humble. Work hardā
Q: Have you ever felt tired with that personality?
Minho: Not at all. If Iām tired then it (T/N: personality) is fake.
Q: Where in Seoul do you like best?
Minho: I like Daehak-ro these days. A hyung Iām close with is in a play so I go to Daehak-ro often. The atmosphere is a bit different. Itās a new space to me, and it makes me feel inspired. Ah, I also like Konkuk University area. Since Iām a Konkuk University student.
Q: Itās pretty busy in front of Konkuk University, there are a lot of alcohol barsā¦
Minho: Iām sorry. I was one of those noisy people. Hahaha.
Q: Last question, your way of speaking and thoughts have become different compared to in 2010, but your handsome face remains the same. Do you agree?
Minho: Thereās only a hairās breadth difference, and I didnāt think it has changed, just that itās more mature. Rather than aging, it has became more mature. I didnāt think of anything when I look in the mirror back then, but these days I put on lotion and feel unusual. I really donāt know how to put it. Is this really me? I sometimes think like that and it frustrates me. Why am I like this these days?
Q: What kind of things have become different?
Minho: Itās difficult to put it into words. The fact that I shave every morning has made me different from how I was in 2010. I didnāt do that everyday at that time. Haha.

160902 - 160904 SHINee World V + Global Package Experience
Hello! Itās been over a week since SHINee World V and Iām so grateful for being able to attend the concerts in Seoul! Yep, Iāve finally accomplished one of my biggest dreams ever since SHINee held their 1st concert in Seoul.Ā
Through this post Iād like to share my concert experience and SMTownās Global Package! At first I kept on contemplating whether Global Package was worth the money or not since itās considerably expensive ;_; Last year I experienced the difficulties of finding tickets for SWC IV in Seoul (which I didnāt manage to go in the end). Thus, I was positive of getting global package for SWC V because it was too risky if I ended up going there without tickets. In the end I only managed to get 2N3D course (concert on 3rd September). Iād love to get the 3N4D course (concert on 3rd to 4th September) but it was already sold out. Itās still alright because I at least managed to secure one day ticket.Ā
Thankfully I managed to get tickets for other two days with a help from my friend :)Ā
1st day of SWC and Lining Up for Merchandise
You might wonder why I lined up for merchandise when thereās MD pre-order service for global package purchasers. Itās true but I personally wanted to experience lining up for merchandise in Seoul concert so, haha. A lot suggested me lining up on the first day concert is the best because there wonāt be a lot of people (they have work/school) and there are more stocks available since itās first day.Ā
I arrived at Olympics Gymanstics Arena around 9AM. There were SHINee concert banners along the road to the venue which made me sooooo excited and still felt it was surreal that I finally made it to the concert venue.
Too excited that I took a selca in front of Minho banner hahaha
Finally arrived in front of the venue!Ā
The lines when I first arrived. I shouldāve gone to the venue earlier!Ā
They started the sale at 10AM so I had to wait for one hour until it opened. Then I had to line up for another approximately 2 hours to enter the counter.
SWC V goods display!
After 3 hours of queueing, I finally managed to get the goods I wanted: lightstick and eco bag. I also bought Minho T-Shirt through global package MD pre-order because Iām afraid it got sold out fast. There were goods that were already sold out when I entered the counter though: Keyring, hand mirror, and ticket book were sold out.
Since the queue was long they gave us goods booklet so we just had to mark which goods we wanted to buy on the booklet then show it to them on the counter.
After I collected all the goods, I went to SM Coex and checked in to my GP hotel (Peyto Hotel Gangnam), then I came back to the venue again around 5.30 PM. Found out that there were no lightsticks available anymore! I was surprised since they usually had more stocks for lightsticks.
Inside Olympics Gymnastics Arena & my view on the first day!
2nd day of SWC, Global Package tour!
Yay itās time to talk about global package tour! The SM CC booth at the hotel started to open from 8PM, butĀ I managed to collect my global package stuff on midnight because the 1st day of SWC ended late. I picked up my GP merchandises, pre-ordered concert MD, and of course concert ticket for 2nd day concert!Ā
Global package goods + concert ticket!
(minus poster tube, pre-ordered Minho T-Shirt, and fan letter papers)
We gathered at the hotel lobby at 9AM for the GP tour. I didnāt get enough sleep on the night before due to concert so I was honestly tired, yet so excited for the tour!Ā
I didnāt manage to write fan letter on the night before so I had to write it quickly, like 20 minutes before the tour started.Ā
My fan letter to SHINee in (broken) korean. Wrote it 20 minutes before our GP bus departed.
My GP bus! We took that bus throughout the tour. (Backstage tour, Shilla Duty Free, SM Coex, and concert)
The first GP tour stop was backstage tour! It was definitely the best part of GP tour. I couldnāt believe that the backstage tour was included in my package and thought only premium GP purchasers were able to get the tour, but turned out everyone who purchased GP were getting it as well.Ā
We were informed about the backstage tour less than two weeks before checking in to hotel, meaning that I got to know about backstage tour after I purchased GP. I think the details of tour will be different for each global package.Ā
Entering the venue again for backstage tour!Ā
We couldnāt take pictures inside and the guide told us they would put stickers on our phone camera, but they ran out of stickers during our group tour. The guide was like,Ā āI have told you 100 times, but no photo and no video please!ā Hahahaha.
I need to tell you that I GOT SO THRILLED when I was about to enter the concert venue (again!). Plus this time I didnāt enter as an audience, but I got to set foot on the CONCERT STAGE. Yes, I got to stand on the same spot as where SHINee had stood for 3 days straight. The feeling was SO AMAZING it almost felt like a dream ;___; I was able to experience the view from SHINeeās perspective every time they hold concerts. I couldnāt stop saying how amazing it was, really.Ā
We didnāt stay on the stage for long though I wish we could. They took a group photo of us on stage as well. Despite not being able to take pictures, Iām glad thereās something I can keep as a memory of standing on SHINeeās stage.Ā
Our group photo on the stage where SHINee held their concerts! They gave the prints after concert.Ā
We also entered SHINeeās dressing room through the backstage. (Again, it was also amazing because I got to see the backstage that I usually see on concert DVDs with my own eyes).Ā
SHINeeās dressing room was actually smaller than what we usually see on concert DVDs or photos. I just thought it would be slightly bigger?Ā
Anyway, their concert outfits were all covered when we were there and we werenāt allowed to touch anything. There was fan letter box where we put our fan letters to SHINee placed inside the dressing room.Ā
The final part of backstage tour was taking pictures with SHINee standees! There were flower wreath with congratulatory messages for SHINee behind the standees.Ā
Didnāt get to take photo of Keyās standee since the staff rushed us to exit quickly. I didnāt remember exactly if the standees were life-sized, but I realized Minho standee was a lot taller than me (lol).Ā
The backstage tour felt really quick and they rushed us from one place to another in the speed of light. The guide felt sorry for that, āI wanted to let you guys stay longer but there were a lot of groups touring at the same time.ā
The next stop is Shilla Duty Free! Basically they just dropped us there for an hour to shop or just relaxed at rooftop cafe if we didnāt want to shop. The GP tour staff gave us SHINee passport case after weāre back to the bus from Shilla Duty Free.
SHINee passport case! Got it after getting back from Shilla Duty Free
Then they took us to SM Artium at COEX. Before entering COEX, the staff gave us SHINee The Horror Show bookmark. I originally got Key and traded it for Jonghyun. Sadly I didnāt get Minho, but itās okay!
Iām not going to talk much about SM Artium because Iām sure there are already many reviews out there. We also only had one hour in SM COEX.
Another lucky thing was SM decided to extend SWC exhibition! The exhibition is located on SM Town Artium COEX 6F. It was originally until end of August, but they decided to extend it until 4th September (that was when I came there, now they extend it again until September 18th)
SHINeeās concert outfits from SWC III to SWC IV
Lastly, they took us to eat lunch before taking us back to the hotel. For lunch, the staff asked us if we were vegetarian or not. There were two meal options: bulgogi and traditional bibimbap.Ā
The Korean restaurant we were having lunch at was in COEX mall. The restaurant played SHINee songs inside haha I think itās because the restaurant was reserved for SWC Global Package.
I had traditional bibimbap for lunch. It tasted good!Ā
We stayed in our hotel room for 30 minutes and then we got ready for the concert! My seat for the 2nd day concert was on 2nd floor. It was based on ticket drawing, did it at the same time I picked up my GP goods.
I realized when I watched the first day concert that Minho was on the left side (from audience view) more, which was unlike previous SHINee World concerts. The ticket I got from GP was the opposite side, thus I had this sudden urge to trade my GP ticket. Thankfully I managed to trade it 20 minutes before the concert started.
The staff gave us mineral water with SHINee membersā face on the bottle before and after concert.
They also gave us a (SHINee World V) box of cookies. How thoughtful of them giving us a lot of things full of SHINee.
My view on 2nd day concert! I also got to see SHINee on moving cart upclose from here :ā)
They took us to concert and venue, so of course they took us back to the hotel after concert! The guides would be outside the venue giving us signs for our way back to the bus after concert.Ā
Overall, Iām very satisfied with Global Package tour and would love to do it again. Itād be great if I can get 2-days concert package next time (hopefully I have better luck with GP tickets as well lol). Though I donāt know if Iām fine with the repetitive SM COEX tour.
3rd day of SWC, saw SHINee after concert!
I barely got any fansite freebies on previous days, thankfully on the last day of concert I managed to get some! Oh and sadly I couldnāt manage to get more lightsticks because again, it got sold out when I came there ;_;Ā
The fansite freebies queue was very long! Itās also hard to tell which fansites did people line up for if the queue is this long, lol. Some of the fansites need us to show our tickets and some others donāt :)Ā
Minho, Jonghyun, and Onew freebies! Iām a happy Onjongho fan.Ā
I got 3rd floor on the 3rd day concert, haha. Itās fascinating how I was able to experience all floors on SWC :)Ā
The 3rd day concert didnāt end very late so I decided to see SHINee coming out from concert venue. It was quite crowded when I arrived there, I got 3rd row from the barrier.Ā
I saw everyone (the orders were: Jonghyun - Minho - Taemin - Key) except Onew (he got injured that day ;_;). I took fancams but the quality was so bad, haha. I posted Minho one, though.Ā
That was the same door where I went out from the backstage tour.Ā
Those 3 days of concert was one of the best moments in my life. It has been my dream to see their solo concert in their home country. Iām happy to have finally accomplished it 5 years after.Ā
Iāve got to tell you that thereās significant difference between seeing SHINee perform in Korea and other countries. They are pretty comfortable to say anything in front of Shawols. It almost looked like we felt close? and just casually chatted with SHINee. ;_; They were pretty thankful about the fan projects we successfully did during those three days.Ā
They were also thoughtful for responding to what we did, like when we sang Love Like Oxygen together before encore. They were impressed with us singing along to LLO (plus mentioning about Onew impersonating Jjongās adlib there).
Iāve got to say fanchants are the best in Korea. The fanchants were so loud and always hit the right timing. If there was no fanchants, Shawols just sang along to the songs and we did that perfectly as well!Ā
It was an all-seated concert, yet we only used our seats during VCRs before waiting for the next performances. Whenever SHINee performed or did their ments, Shawols stood up, all geared with their lightsticks on and chanted for SHINee!Ā
Bonus Post: The Saem in Seoul
I found out thereās 3rd volume of The Saem SHINee Photobook at the time I was in Seoul. Iāve always liked SHINee shots for The Saem so I made sure Iām going to get the PB. Iāve heard a lot of stories about The Saem outlets in Seoul charging very high (over 100,000 won) to get SHINee gifts. The Myeongdong outlet charged the highest, probably because there a lot of of foreigners.
My friend informed me that The Saem outlet in Express Bus Terminal is one of very Shawol-friendly outlets. Theyād give you more SHINee gifts especially if you tell the staff that youāre a SHINee fan. In my case though, I (unfortunately) didnāt get to say Iām a SHINee fan, yet I had made it obvious to them since I sang along to SHINee songs that they played, lol.Ā
They gave me the 3rd volume SHINee Photobook (30,000 won minimum purchase) and SHINee mini posters (20,000 won minimum purchase), yay! I didnāt get as many, but itās okay because I haveĀ other The Saem SHINee stuff already.Ā
The Saem Express bus terminal outlet. Itās pretty small but they have SHINeeās face all around the corner!Ā
Left: Mini Posters (5 members)Ā
Right: SHINee The Saem Photobook Vol. 3
They look so handsome ;_______;
I think itād be nice to get The Saem SHINee gifts from Express Bus Terminal outlet. Itās locatedĀ on a shopping center number A-51, which is connected to Express Bus Terminal subway station exit 8.

Idol group SHINee member and actor Choi Minho (25) entered his 8th year of debut this year. He made a movie appearance just ānowā. His screen debut is called āGrandmother Gyechoonā (T/N: English title is āCanolaā) (Premiered in May 19, Director Chang). A story of a female diver grand-mother (Yoon Yeojung) in Jeju who found her lost granddaughter Hyeji (Kim Go Eun) after 12 years. Choi Minho acted as Han, an ordinary high school student who has crush on Hyeji. His role isnāt as big as fans anticipation and he only has short appearance, but to him, Han who adjusts the pace with Hyeji is like a good fit. He said, āI have dreamt to be an actor from a long time.ā He expressed his solid desire, āIām now at the phase where all of my acting experiences are building up foundations.āĀ
We met him in a small space of the cinema right after āCanolaā press conference. His physical proportion which looks like itās coming out from a Manhwa (T/N: āMangaā in Japanese) and his clean-cut features are attractive, yet he still managed to strike a pose in a small room. āDuring press conference, it felt like my heart was about to explode the point I could hear it. Itās my first time to experience something like this after SHINeeās first concert. Iām very happy and overwhelmed because itās my first movie.ā To him, making screen debut is a new challenge and a new beginning.
Youāve acted in TV Drama āMedical Top Team (2013, MBC)ā and āMy First Time (2015, On Style)ā as a lead. I think you appear in a movie a bit late.
I like movies and have always wanted to appear in a movie but I didnāt get the opportunity. The schedule didnāt match if I have to go side by side with SHINeeās schedule. I read the scenario of āCanolaā and said that I wanted to do the project, so I strongly appealed the director (laughs). It was pretty impressive. I watched the movie and thankfully my appearance didnāt impose it.
What do you think about Hanās character?
He is a fixture who lives and grows up in Jeju. The director hoped for an innocent feeling from Han. Actually he couldnāt find a perfect actor to portray the role and I was the last one to get casted. He said that Iām the last puzzle piece to complete the casting. It made me very happy.
Han seems so different from Choi Minho who lives as an Idol
When I portray a character, I try to immerse myself in the character by making intersection between me and him (T/N: the character). I find it difficult to be inside his insistent daily life based on my experience last time. For instance, I was away from TV or iPad when I filmed in Jeju. In order to feel one with the place and look genuine, I only used Kakaotalk āa bitā (laughs).
Ā How was your first day of filming?
I was pretty nervous, but it went really well. Perhaps itās because the filming took place in Jeju. Itās surrounded by blue sea when we look back and canola flowers in front of our eyes. The food is also delicious and staffs treated me warmly. It was pretty healing (laughs). It was a moment I spent as another āhuman Choi Minhoā while having SHINee activities in Seoul. Iāve juggled my acting and singer activities in that place. I started feeling something special towards Jeju since then.
In the movie, Han let Hyeji listen to music together in the forest. Hyeji blurted out a question to him, āWhy do you take care of me so well?ā. Han dodged the question and confessed āYouāre prettyā. The scene gives off a cute and fresh atmosphere. āIt is a one take scene. The director told me not to be too cringeworthy so I felt burdened. āHow should I do it?ā Hmmā¦, Han wanted to tell his feelings to Hyeji, but he got nervous and had no confidence. In the end, he gathered his courage because they were aloneā said Minho about his acting. He said, āI like discovering a lot of things from myself and having a lot of thoughts in the process of understanding a character.ā He debuted as an idol, but he didnāt want to let go of acting so he went to film department at Konkuk University. āI was in high school when I became a singer and I thought it was unfair to enroll in acting major with special treatment, so I went through regular application process by taking university entrance exam and got accepted.ā
How was your university life?
On the beginning of my school days, I wanted to fulfill my desire in acting by studying hard. Not long after that, rather than studying, I ended up playing harder with my fellow batch 2010 friends (laughs). I play sports at sport tournament, I set up tent at a lodge⦠ The school events I regularly participated in were fun and precious memories. It might be because Iāve lived as a celebrity since I was a teenager, but after debut I felt that a lot of people whom I met only saw me as āSHINee Minhoā. My school friends treated me comfortably with sincerity and Iām thankful for that. In the 4th year, I got told off by my professor, director Hong Sang Su. He told me to come to school often (laughs).
Your daily life is more ordinary than I thought. What kind of person is Choi Minho when he is not acting or being on stage?
He is not different from other guys in particular. He jokes around a lot, chatters around, gathers with friends to play sports and goes for a drink together after. If thereās any difference, he may have more mature mentality than his peers because he started his career earlier?
Have you ever gotten frustrated when you're acting?
Of course I have. Even when I monitored myself on site, āThatās too badā and watching the broadcast, āWhy couldnāt I express work on it more than thatā. Those are times when I feel regretful. There was a singer-actor hoobae like me. He asked me how he should act. He really looked like me from the past. I told the hoobae, āLessen your regretā. Itās a big homework for me too.Ā
But youāve been living as a celebrity since you were a teenager.
Iāve lived on great fortune. All the loves from public are my fortune. As a person who expresses his emotions in public, I want to become a good actor who gives positive energy. For that, I reflect on myself at the moment when I got stuck on my tasks and neglected my surroundings.
Youāre very positive because of your habit to reflect on yourself
Of course. I inherit my parentsā āpositiveā energy!
