tbh i like to imagine that lucy's father not being around is what caused her to have bpd (i know she's not confirmed to have it, but she's written a lot like she has it and that's not a bad thing! writers tend to draw from what they know!). even if he's not a deadbeat dad and loves his kids, intent doesn't matter nearly as much as the impact. kids dont understand the concept of jobs and money, they only see that daddy isn't around and keeps breaking promises or not showing up when he said he would. when i was 7 my dad abandoned us though at first he said he just got a new job in a new state and would invite us over when he had stable housing. literally immediately after he left i gained the same pattern of obsessive attachment over anyone who was nice to me that lucy had with mike, and as i got older i mimicked my mother's tendency to believe that people i loved that left me truly would come back if i just waited and was loyal and managed to prove it somehow. i see that a lot in lucy with mike as well, parents are the blueprint for how you give and receive love!!!!!! i know my headcanon is likely only in my head but i like to think its a very good one even if every other bcb fan ive ever talked to about it doesnt seem to think so hahahaha
