The heart is an arrow. It demands to land true. She clung to the wall, but it was purpose she grasped at long last, and that carried her upwards.
She was not a lynx or a spider or even the Wraith. She was Inej Ghafa, and her future was waiting above.

You and I and That Empty World
(Written by El (smokesatellite on AO3) and illustrated by vRyfMi)
The cold had teeth.
Sharp, white, biting. Everything felt wet in that way that snuck through the seams of Jinxās coat and made a home in her bones. Her knee was ruinedātoo stiff, too swollen. Something pulled every time she took a step.
But there was no time to stop. Not now. Not when anythingāanyoneācould find her.
Branches cracked underfoot as she limped through the woodsātall, naked trees clawing at the sky like they were begging for spring. Her breath fogged the air in sharp, uneven bursts.
There was blood stiffening at the hem of her jeansādried, mostly. She wasnāt in danger of dying, probably, but she was freezing, hurting, and about five minutes from screaming at the world just out of spite.
She didnāt expect to find anything, not really. But then there it was, tucked just above the valley; a crooked old farmhouse with frost hugging the glass and its porch warped under the weight of time. It looked haunted, maybe. Or just long forgotten.
She raised her gun, anyway, because nothing was ever truly abandoned.
āø»
The door creaked like it held a grudge. Warmth spilled out immediately, hitting her in the face like a slap. Real heat. Firelight. The kind of thing she didnāt take for granted anymore.
She stepped in slow, gun still raised. The wood groaned beneath her boots. Then, he was there.
He didnāt move muchājust emerged from behind some half-rotted support beam, holding a blade low, but not low enough. His stare was unreadable. Careful. Jinx froze.
They didnāt say anything at firstājust took each other in, like trying to place a half-remembered face from a dream. She held her gun up higher. Instinctive. Innate. Twitchy. She wanted to say something. To scream. Usually, that kind of thing came easyāthe erratic words, the impulsive bite.
But with him, in the first warm place sheād found in days⦠nothing. āYou sick?ā he asked eventually, voice level.
His eyes scanned over herādissecting. āNo.ā
He didnāt blink. Didnāt shift. Then, finally, nodded once.
āOne night,ā he said. Not his name. Not his history. She didnāt lower the gun. She offered nothing back. But she didnāt leave either.

When she awoke, she had no memory of falling asleep. Her leg throbbed like hell, but the bandages were new. Tighter. Cleaner. The pain was still there, but someone had tried to make it bearable.
She groaned, hauling herself upright. She wasnāt dead, which felt⦠inconvenient. Unfortunate. A curse. The house creaked as she hobbled into the hallwayāfloorboards shifting under her weight like they had opinions. The walls were lined with old photos, long since faded.
Someoneās life used to live here. She wondered if that boyāthat ghostāeven noticed them anymore. The kitchen was warm.
He stood at the stove, back to her, pan sizzling with something that smelled vaguely like eggs. He didn't look up. Jinx leaned against the doorway. Something in her wanted to biteāwanted to bare her teeth and pounce.
Instead, all she managed was a pointed joke. One she wished had come out meaner. Sharper. āYou always feed your intruders?ā
āNo.ā
āYou got a name?ā
A pause. The sound of sizzling pierced through nothing. Then, with a swallowed gulp; āEkko.ā He didnāt bother turning. āYou got one, too?ā
She shouldāve lied. But with him, honesty came before she could snatch it back. āJinx.ā
Then, her leg gave out. She caught herself on the frame before she could eat shit.
He helped her to the couch without a wordājust an arm hooked around her ribs. āStop hovering.ā
āStop falling.ā
She sank into the cushions. He stepped back but didn't go far. āNo creeping around. No stealing.ā
She squinted. āDon't touch my stuff.ā
He huffed. āShould've predicted that.ā
āø»
She was on her feet the next morning. Barely. The leg still burned, but she limped betterāless roadkill, more stubborn mutt. Outside, Ekko was swearing at a warped plank on the fence. Nails bent. Wood splintered.
She leaned in the doorway. āYou seducing it into staying put?ā
He didnāt look up. āGot better ideas?ā
āYeah. Move.ā She hobbled down, grabbed the hammer from him. They fixed it togetherāher bracing, him nailing straight. Ekko eyed her hands.
āDidnāt know you could still do thatāin your state and all.ā
She shrugged. āDidn't know you could still talk.ā Later, when the wind cut through her bandage, he showed her how to wrap it tighter. She grumbled. He almost smiled.
āø»
The barn was colder than she expected. Dust clung to everythingāblueprints, scrap bins, half-gutted drones. In the corner, the old generator rattled out a dying cough. Ekko crouched beside it, sleeves pushed up, hair a mess.
āGonna lose our heat if this thing quits,ā he muttered. Jinx didn't askājust limped over, popped her knuckles. āYou're wiring it backwards.ā
His eyes flicked up, unimpressed. āYou think youāre an expert now?ā
āI know I am.ā She shoved him aside with her hip. He huffed but held the flashlight steady while she stripped a wire, twisted two new ends together, sparked a connection. The hum steadied.
Ekko let out a low whistle. āYou always fix dying things?ā
āNot quite,ā she said, wiping her hands on her jeans. Their eyes caughtāfamiliar and new, all at once.
āThanks,ā he said, quiet. She shrugged. āKeep it running next time.ā
[id: a drawing of a crudely-made generator with a green body that is covered in blue and pink graffities./end id]
āø»
The fire cracked low. Night settled over them in full, draped in frost and dark silence. They sat near each other. Not too close. But closer than before. Ekko peeled a potato with an old pocket knife. Jinx watched the blade glide in slow, practiced circles. Her leg throbbed faintly, but she
didn't complain.
After a while, she muttered it. āVi.ā
Ekko paused.
āShe'sāā she swallowed. āWas. Is. My sister.ā
Ekko's lip twitched. Something in him softened that made her nails curl into the palms of her hands.
āShe's why I left,ā Jinx added. āShe went on a runāwas leading the team. I waited for days. Weeks. But...ā
āYou think she's still alive?ā
āDon't know.ā She stared at the fire like it owed her an answer. āBut I have to check.ā
He didn't say anything right away. Just nodded, slow. Understanding without promising. āI wasnāt planning on finding anyone else,ā he said. āI lost people, too.ā
The quiet stretched. Comfortable, almost. But then she twitched. Jerked her leg. Her hand spasmed. She stood up too fast.
āJinxāā
āIām fine.ā Her voice was sharp, splintered. āDon't look at me like that.ā Then she disappeared down the hallway, and the firelight flickered like it was trying to follow her.
āø»
They hunted together. Ekko had the patience. Jinx had the noise. He moved quiet; she stomped like the forest owed her rent.
āYou're loud,ā he muttered.
āI'm effective.ā
A Gray stumbled out. One clean shotāthrough the eye. Ekko stared.
āUseful,ā he said.
They buried it later, out of habit. Humanity, tooāthough neither would call it that. She shot a turkey big enough to last all week.
āø»
She found herself watching him. Not just watchingāstudying. The way his eyes narrowed when he was thinking. How he tied his boots double-knotted like it was life or death. The quiet things. It pissed her off. So that night, she packed again. Didnāt say anything. Just zipped the bag.
Reached for the door.
āYou running?ā he asked from the couch. His voice didn't rise. Just settled. She froze.
āI have to,ā she said.
āNo, you don't.ā
āI do.ā
She left anyway. Got as far as the edge of the trees. Then stood there for a long time, shivering, cursing herself for not being better at goodbyes she didnāt want to make.
When she turned back, Ekko was already waiting on the creaky porch with a chipped mug of too-hot tea. She took it from him without meeting his eyes. Still, she caught a hint of his smile.
āø»
The map was a mess. Drawn by hand, edges frayed, dirt ground into the creases. But it was detailedāroutes inked in black, scrawled notes in the margins: danger zone, collapsed bridge, possible Gray nest.
Jinx stared at it, brow low, arms crossed like she needed to brace herself against the thought of hope. āShe said she was heading south,ā she muttered. āFor the outpost. Might've veered off.ā
Ekko didn't look up. āI've marked three paths that keep us off major roads. Less chance of exposure.ā
She squinted at him. āYou're helping me?ā
He nodded. āWasn't gonna let you limp off into a nest of Grays alone.ā
āI wouldn't have limped,ā she said, but it came out weak.
He looked at her, quiet. āYouāre not alone, Jinx. Not anymore.ā She didn't know what to say, so she didn't. Just nodded, throat tight, fingers twitching at her sleeves.
āø»
She tried it again one night at dawnāpack ready, hand on the knob.
āJinx.ā
Ekko leaned in the doorway, hair wild. āYou don't have to go alone.ā
āPeople die when they stick around.ā
āI know.ā He paused. āI don't want to lose anyone else.ā
She stepped away from the door. Didn't say anything. Stayed.
āø»
The generator died mid-morning. Silence swallowed the house. Jinx found Ekko outside, boot against the metal, sparks spitting. āStop kicking it,ā she snapped.
āHelp me, then.ā He tossed her the wrench. They bent over the guts togetherāswapping wires, cursing under their breath. When it finally hummed back to life, they both laughedārelieved, exhausted.
They didn't see the goat slip through the gate until it bolted. By the time they dragged it backāsoaked, shiveringāJinx dropped into the grass, gasping. Ekko hovered, half-grinning.
She snorted. āNext time, you fix it alone.ā
āø»
The wound had scabbed over enough. She sat out back with a chipped knife and a rag between her teeth, the last of the stitches gleaming in the cold. Her fingers were trembling, but she was carefulāangling the blade just so, breath low and steady.
One by one, she cut them loose. Blood welled up immediately, dark and wet and hot against the cold morning air.
Ekko found her like thatāhalf-hunched, eyes glassy. He didn't yell. Didn't lecture. He just sat beside her, reached for the gauze in her bag, and pressed it to her skin. His touch was steady. Warm.
Her eyes flicked to him. His jaw was setāworried, but calm. She watched his hands move. Saw the way his lashes caught the sun. The scar under his eye she'd forgotten about.
āYou always this gentle?ā she asked, voice rough.
āOnly when I want someone to stop bleeding.ā A beat passed. He shifted. Hesitated. Then leaned in. Slow. Intentional. Stopped just short.
āSorry,ā he whispered, breath skating her cheek. āI shouldn'tāā She cut him off. Grabbed the front of his jacket and kissed him. It wasn't smooth. Wasn't clean.
Her nose bumped his. The blood still ran warm down her thigh. The rag she'd used to muffle her pain was still clenched in one hand. But he kissed her back like he'd been waiting months. Years. It was soft, at firstāalmost reverent. Then messier. Hungrier. Like neither of them could
believe they were still allowed to feel anything this warm. When she pulled back, their foreheads pressed together. Breathing the same air.
Her voice shook. āDon't make me regret that.ā
āWouldn't dream of it,ā he whispered.
Later, when he moved to kiss her again, neither of them wanted it to stop at all.
āø»
They packed light. Two rifles. A bag of wire and tools. Rations. A battered radio transmitter. Ekko had the map. Jinx had the compass. The sky was pale gray, clouds trailing like ghosts overhead. He walked ahead, steady and certain. Jinx followed, one hand resting on her pack,
the other twitching near her sidearm.
She didn't look back. But she didnāt stop watching his back either.
And for onceāfor nowāit felt like forward was somewhere they could go together.
do you think glam and vicky ever fight about her smoking? glam wonāt let pets in the house because of the odor yet she smokes inside. as the child of chain smokers who smoked inside this is one of those things i get weirdly invested in thinking about lol
ahh okok actually I've thought about it quite a lot. I was surprised as well when he didnt mind in the slightest in the gamenight episode.
One of my older wips features bit about Vicky's smoking habit actually, so might as well share cause I have no idea whether I'll finish that one honestly
The tip of the half-used cigarette rests on her lips again as she inhales the fumes, and, against his better judgement, he feels his cheeks heat up. There is something oddly enticing, about watching her smoke; perhaps it is simply because everything she does, she does so wonderfully he cannot help but be drawn to her like moth to flame. Part of him wants to run her over some statistics regarding lung cancer fatalities; he also finds himself utterly mesmerized by her at this very moment. The way fire reflections cling to her face creating shadows and depth. Her puckered up lips, soft and full. There is something indecent, about the way they envelop the cigarette. He tries to memorize this moment in great detail, so that he can recreate in his sketchbook later.
Now to actually answer your question. While I do think Glam would take some issue with it, I also think its a bit different from the animals thing simply cause Glam's spent so many years hanging out with other smokers anyway, so me might be more used to it. Maybe it bothered him at first, but at some point he eased into it a bit more?

Art idea: can be maybe get like, Vicky getting flustered around Glam when idk he's shirtless or something. And then vice versa. Vicky maybe being like, idk hot messy and dirty and Glam.exe shutting down at the sight
I just wanna see them BOTH super blushy and shy around each other even though they've been married for years šš
if that's okay. and if you have time. You're cool, take care!
HII TYSM FOR THE SUBMISSION !! Hope yours is going good as well, it was very fun to sketch for your idea! Their relationship is incredibly sweet and interesting and I hope the following episodes will be able to explore it more in depth
Also the cool in me recognizes the cool in you, take care š¼
Ok so. I really don't know what to make of Glamvicky after this.
They were extremely cute. They had chemistry. Their kiss was so adorable. They were blushy and giggly and a little pervy. Just how I like them.
But they inability to discuss serious shit haunts me. Vicky was SO CLOSE!! The look on Glam's face, the LOOK OF FEELING GODDAMN UNDERSTOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS. All this, just for her to ultimately deflect which in turn made him backtrack instantly.
Allow me to pull my psychology student knowledge āš¤ out to get my point across better. According to Sternberg's Triangular Love Theory, for a relationship to be truly thriving there needs to be passion, commitment, and intimacy. With Glamvicky, the passion component is CLEARLY UNDENIABLY there, the commitment component is also there as showcased by their marriage, but they seriously lack the intimacy. And I used to assume they are just a bit dysfunctional like that, with none of them willing to share about their past. It worked perfectly for me, as long as it was mutual. But having Glam not as reluctant to open up as we'd theorized changes that dynamic and not really in a good way? Before I've never took him for one for emotional transparency, but now I got the impression he almost craves it, just doesn't really know how to handle it? Unless, of course, automatically translated youtube subtitles misled me
Anyways, I don't know, I guess deep down I've always been aware this show is not supposed to be that deep, and they WERE soooo adorable, and I WAS giggling and kicking my feet the entire time, but ALSO they had more of a teenage first love kind of vibe than an actual mature relationship that's endgame?
thanks for this wonderful addition @rickless-self-indulgence! I am seeing your vision regarding some sort of conflict in the marriage before Victoria's backstory SO clearly
Aww tysm!! Your thoughts on mf are so nice to read
iirc someone said Victorias backstory was scheduled for the end of the second season, letās hope it works out satisfactorily, Iām excited to know more about Vicky

do you think glam and vicky were ever mommy and daddy to the kids or do you think itās always been mom and dad
Hello!! Hope you're having a nice day!
I definitely see little baby Heavy calling them mommy and daddy, but Dee probably shamed him out of it (it's not mature enough or whatever)
as for Dee. I'm a huge sucker for aloof characters being vulnerable around their loved ones when hurt/sick/distressed. So, I can envision Dee calling them mommy/daddy when feverish for example
Hi hi, now I'm inside your inbox! Do you have any headcanons regarding Glam, Vicky, and their relationship?
i have soooooo many really specific ones, but hereās a much more general overview of how i feel. i project a lot onto victoria i think because i find her very personally relatable, glam as well but not as much.
i believe that victoria drops her guard in private with glam and lets herself emotionally recharge and receive validation when she needs it. i myself have spent my whole life struggling to connect emotionally with girls and then women, probably because of some undiagnosed thing, and have always presented myself as gender nonconforming. i had a hohawk for many years, as well as having kept my hair very short in a more masculine style, and have only grown it out in the last few years and even now i have a shaggy mullet/sophie thatcher thing going on. iām also midsize with a lot of tattoos and facial piercings and donāt shave super consistently. having the fortitude to be able to make your outer expression match your inside feelings doesnāt necessarily mean that youāre a confident person, and when you also sometimes pursue relationships with men, as i have, it can be very difficult not to develop insecurities.
i feel that victoria has spent a lot of years learning to let other peopleās comments about her body roll off of her but does still sometimes like to hear from her lover that sheās beautiful and still deserving of soft touches. iām very lucky to be a woman in this world who gets to be who i am with a husband that not only supports my choices but also voices his appreciation for the things about my appearance that others have made me feel lesser for. i feel victoria has that with glam and that their very first pillow talking sessions were him expressing admiration for her physique but still making her feel feminine in the subversive way that is unique to her.
i think glams character is pretty heavily flanderized by the fandom. heās definitely more of a listener and can be shy but heās also very protective and not helpless and childlike the way a lot of people depict him. i definitely think heās autistic and i think he also has some gender stuff going on. i think heās Glam and not Sebastian in the same way a lot of lesbians or other gnc people will choose nicknames that better represent their gender expression, but different from a deadname versus a chosen name. i think heās comfortable moving through the world thinking of himself in a nebulous, undefined way. i think victoria is the perfect match for him, allowing him to relax after spending all his formative years being strong and hyper vigilant to protect himself from abuse. i donāt think itās that he canāt be more assertive, i think itās that heās happy that he has the choice. and i think everything about what makes victoria who she is being unconventional has relieved him of a lot of the pressure to fulfill standards of masculinity he was held to as a teen
i like to think victoria or ches taught him how to drive, and that they both exposed him to all the pop culture he missed out on during his insulated childhood. i think once victoria was pregnant and they had their children he did a lot of work to learn about childrenās media and games so that he could be the father that he didnāt have. itās fun to think about him helping the boys do motherās day crafts or playing with legos and i think they all bonded together by indulging in childrenās pastimes and the adults healed some neglected parts of themselves. i think everything about who they are as individuals solidifies who they are as a couple.
do you think having dee was a choice or do you think he was a surprise baby and how do you think that played out
Oh hello!!! I have been DYING to share my thoughts on the show with an actual person and not, a void.
As to your question, I think I'm partial to the Dee was an accident interpretation. My reasoning is as follows:
a) These freaks totally forget protection sometimes. In my head they always just, get carried away, in the early years at least
b) I doubt Vicky would be keen on planning a pregnancy. I feel like once it's settled, she goes with the flow, but deliberately trying to get pregnant, I highly doubt. I imagine her feeling very much out of her depth during both pregnancy and early years of raising Dee, but ultimately she grows into the new role
c) I'm kind of torn between having Glam be absolutely elated about the news, similar styles as back when Twisted Sister wanted them to open for a show, OR be super calm and soft about it, much like in that bit in the comic, where he's reacting to the pregnancy number 2
Anyway thank you so much for your question! My inbox is open for more anytime, have a great rest of the day :D
iām glad the kids are having fun pining after their little blorbo eboy but iām a married woman quickly approaching their 30s and Glam is beekeeping age and vicki is giving me gender envy
