Recent Read Manga Recommendation Round Up (plus anime!) - Part 4
Manga/anime I’ve been enjoying recently! Links to part 1, part 2, and part 3.
Twitter link to this post here.
~Links to my other manga posts~ My personal favs/ones I super enjoyed will have a ✨ on them :)
Some of these don't have official (or unofficial) EN translations since I read a lot of JP-only manga and I’d like to make people aware of those titles too! My hope is that bringing awareness to them will help get them licensed :) I guess if any sound interesting, ask publishers to license them!

Have you seen my small land? It’s a film from 2022 by Emma Kawawada
I haven’t. I just looked it up and it looks super interesting! I’ll have to give it a watch. Thank you for telling me about it!
Let’s Talk Manga Demographics!
Colleen from Colleen's Manga Recs asked me to weigh in when someone had questions regarding manga demographics, so I made a Twitter thread. I figured I'd make a post here too since this topic has many misconceptions. I am someone who frequents bookstores in Japan, works in the industry with manga demographics being my special interest, and this is a manga blog after all.
There’s a lot more to demographics than this but here goes nothing.

OP I need u to know that I love your brain and your large dissertation on GANGSTA. This fandom is small since the hiatus/anime failing but I inhaled ur work like python eating a egg and I am so full and content. I noticed in your list you are read/gonna read Haru’s Curse by Konishi Asuka. She has another series that involves yakuza/psychological thrills that I feel like you would enjoy since you enjoyed gangsta. It's called Yakuza Bride/ Raise wa Ganin ga ii <3
Anon, I need you to know you made my day with your message. Thank you! Every time someone tells me they read my posts, I’m like, “omg people actually read my posts?” 🥺❤️ because I’m over here like, god I’m so annoying *clicks post anyway*
tbh I’m so close to writing a part 3 for GANGSTA. because like I mentioned, there’s so much more I wanna pick apart! But maybe after I get my JP physicals so I can flip around and see the original Japanese and what-not.
I did read Haru’s Curse and wrote a little post on it! I have heard of Konishi-sensei’s Raise wa Tanin ga Ii, and it’s actually already on my tbr :) there’s just so much stuff I wanna read so we’ll see when I get to it. I was thinking about it the other day lol.

Got more new titles and shorter reads this time around!

Gene Bride - ジーンブライド
DRAMA, SCI-FI, MYSTERY
Gene Bride by Takano Hitomi
(2 volumes, ongoing)
JP only - English summary in this post
Links to my other manga posts here
I can't remember where I first saw this manga (the bookstore some time ago probably) and tbh I kinda forgot about it. But Colleen's Manga Recs made a video recently that reminded me I wanted to check Gene Bride out. So here we are.
This series won second place in the オンナ編 (Female Category) for the このマンガがすごい! 2023 / Kono Manga ga Sugoi 2023 / “This Manga is Amazing! 2023″. (My post about the first-place winner here!)
Another blind read and all I knew about it was that it had sci-fi elements. After reading the two currently out volumes, I think we have yet another manga to throw into the "publishers, please license this" pile.
This manga has so many moments that made me go, "Mood."
Untitled Blue - アンタイトル・ブルー
DRAMA, MYSTERY
Untitled Blue by Natsume Yukiko
(2 volumes, ongoing)
JP only - English summary in this post
Links to my other manga posts here
I've started out this year strong by completely ignoring my 2023 Manga Reading Goals post, which is very on-brand for me tbh, with Momo's Medical History, Yume no Shizuku Kin no Torikago, A California Story, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting. I have my reasons so leave me be. I decided to actually consult my list this time and was debating between Untitled Blue and Tenjou Renka. Knew practically nothing about either but went with Untitled Blue after skimming the samples for each. All I DID know beforehand was it had something about art and suicide, that's it. (***Trigger warning for suicide*** because it is indeed in there.)
This one’s for you Colleen *finger guns*
The Manga Review: Looking Backward
The Manga Review: Looking Backward
Buckle up, dear reader; this week’s Manga Review is bursting at the seams! The first order of business? The best (and worst) of 2022. The Comics Journal recently posted its annual list, polling thirty-three critics, artists, editors, and scholars about their favorite titles. While some of the nominations were predictable—there were a lot of folks praising Kate Beaton’s Ducks—there were also a…

Momo's Medical History - モモの医術史
FANTASY, ADVENTURE
Momo's Medical History by Naomoto Sanba and Asano Non
(1 volume, ongoing)
JP only - English summary in this post
Links to my other manga posts here
With the first volume coming out on the heels of the New Year's holiday, Momo's Medical History is a new series that piqued my interest with the premise of a 13-year-old imperial physician looking for a rumored book that can revive the dead. I figured I'd check it out and see if it was a series I wanted to follow or not.
Let's get started!

An Irani girl named Fatima who’s a captive of the Mongol Empire and uses her education to her advantage???
Hello, my name is Fatimah, I’m half Irani, and it’s finally my time >:)
I hope you guys are ready for history and cultural lessons! I worked really hard on this post and she’s a long one… I literally just came back from an Iran trip and got some books, took pictures, and consulted people who know more than me for this post (the trip wasn’t for the post, that was a coincidence lolllll).
This was one of the best things I’ve read on tumblr in an age! I would love to see this title licensed for English-language readers.
Oh my goodness, that's so sweet of you to say! Thank you for reading, and I'm glad you enjoyed it :)))
Let's Talk AI Art
I've seen the famous, "I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself" quote from Hayao Miyazaki. However, I've never seen the full context for that quote. After I saw this video, I just... wow.
I don't know what possessed me but I wrote a whole post about it.
I haven't been super vocal about this topic since I didn't really have much to add to what everyone was already saying. Also, I was marinating on my opinion after learning more and hearing both sides.
This is going to sound cheesy but it's true, so here goes nothing. Art is inherently human. It’s one of the earliest forms of human expression and communication.
I think about this cave painting every day. I mean, look at the line weights, proportions, and composition. The way just a few lines can convey an image and life experiences of the artist.
Haru’s Curse - 春の呪い
DRAMA, PSYCHOLOGICAL, ROMANCE
Haru's Curse by Konishi Asuka
(2 volumes, complete)
Available in English

This manga made me upset and uncomfortable and not for the reasons you might think.
It wasn’t the older sister going out with her dead younger sister’s man that made me feel that way. That was actually handled pretty well! I promise. It’s more about guilt and grief. What I mean is there were some scenes that deeply upset me because of some fresh personal wounds it brought back to the surface. Some old wounds too, tbh.
Why do I keep doing this??? It can’t be healthy…

Early this year, I stopped by my local bookstore while heading home from the train station and I was looking for a shorter read. I saw a lot of copies of this manga on the tables my past few visits and decided to give it a go.

Mushishi - 蟲師
HISTORICAL, SUPERNATURAL
Mushishi by Urushibara Yuki
(10 volumes, complete)
The anime is great :)
More people need to check out Mushishi and I’m gonna push the Mushishi agenda every chance I get.
Mushishi is one of my top fav series of all time, but I feel like not enough people know about it.
View on Twitter
It’s a supernatural slice of life set in ye olde Japan. We follow mushi expert (or Mushishi) Ginko as he wanders the country, helping people ailed by supernatural phenomena caused by mushi.
Yes!!! It’s great!!! Personally I think you could watch the episodes in random order and it still wouldn’t matter much, since almost all of the episodes are episodic. I actually accidentally watched the second season first and the first season second, and it was fine. Both seasons start with an episode where it’s explained what mushi are, so there’s no confusion. I actually only found out about my ‘mistake’ when I was already done with the season. I didn’t even realise that anything was off lmao. Anytime when I feel like watching it again I just pick episodes randomly and enjoy the vibe. So if you feel intimidated by the watch order guide: don’t be! There’s literally no way to get it wrong. Just put mushishi on play and enjoy.
Totally! The watch order isn't a huge deal. There are some times where a concept or world building thing from before comes up, but even then it's not detrimental to your enjoyment.
The watch order was just because I didn’t want to miss any content and initially, I thought it was just season 1-2, but there’s extra stuff and a movie :)
