It seems pretty obvious to play Tabuu as a very stoic figure, but if you think about it for a bit, he’s gotta be at least a little silly right? I mean, if I were trying to give the impression that I’m a dangerous threat not to be trifled with, then I wouldn’t have so many funny little dudes representing me, you know?

For as dark as Subspace is, these are some pretty colorful characters. So many members of the Subspace army are just so whimsical like this. Granted, Tabuu is pretty whimsical in his own way, but his demeanor doesn’t really match up.

Also (assuming that Spirits choose their puppet rather than being forced onto them), Tabuu’s butterfly motif was so important to him, that he chose Bayonetta, one of the more over the top and provocative fighters on the roster, as his puppet when he’s otherwise very reserved. If it were all about looks and abilities, I’d think that Mewtwo would have been a more fitting choice (they’re bald, they float, they *apparently have psychic powers, equally stoic, etc). If Tabuu is as cutthroat and calculating as he’s made out to be, then I don’t think he’d be this caught up in his aesthetic.

Alternatively, he’s even more cold and calculated than he lets on. Maybe these silly enemies were made to further trick the fighters into thinking that Master Hand was the true mastermind. It seems more natural for Master Hand to have made these whimsical minions than it does for some more menacing threat to have done so. And he may have chosen Bayonetta because she’s **canonically one of the strongest fighters on the roster. Really, it could go either way.

*I only say that because Tabuu’s spirit boosts PSI Attacks, so he probably has some sort of psychic/spiritual power.
