I've been having a hard time adjusting I had the shiniest wheels, now they're rusting
I didn't know if you'd care if I came back
I have a lot of regrets about that
Time and time again, the universe has proven to Maite that she should have remained in all fours instead. First, a debt (one that she would make sure to make nonexistent as soon as she could, if only she could catch up with the elusive good fucking Samaritan) and now another medal for good behavior — the only ones that she usually sported and has done so since she was young. To be fair, the other guy’s face was as punchable as they come; the only reason she didn’t rip his throat out was the aftermath. “That’s a stupid question,” Maite merely responded, looking at the human with furrowed eyebrows and semi-annoyed features (semi because, for some reason, this tiny human was not as bad as the others — for one, she was useful). “I would say I can just leave if that’s what you want but I don’t really care and I need you to patch me up.” Maite followed Sadie, eyes absentmindedly looking around. “What, you got no tiny human friends that do boring human things with you?” Maite smirked, taking off her jacket.
Sadie rolled her eyes playfully, more amused than put out by Maite’s tone and general demeanor. “Maybe you just missed me,” she suggested with a raised brow, certain that wasn’t it. Maite and her weren’t friends, really-the other woman had made that clear enough-but her presence was familiar, comfortable at this point. She grabbed her first aid kit from beneath the sink, and nudged Maite into sitting on the closed toilet, holding out her hand to inspect the injury before cleaning it with a soft touch. “Have I ever turned you away?” Sadie prompted, snorting a little as she worked. “I’ve been patching you up for months with minimal complaints, so hush.” Even the first few times Maite arrived at her door, Sadie had kept her concerns and issues with the new arrangement to herself. “Human friends don’t show up to my apartment and keep me company this late,” she admitted with a laugh. Her friend group was small, shrinking ever since she broke up with Milo, and decreasing even more since she found out about the wolves. It was hard, keeping secrets.

HISTORY
(parental death tw, medical procedures referenced tw)
You came into this world cloaked in death.
It lingered on your skin, haunting you as you grew, shaping aspects of yourself you wouldn’t recognize without it. Your father never talked about it much-the way your mother went to the hospital and only you returned, how he never planned on being a single father-but you could feel the hole where your mother should be in your childhood home even to this day.
You were all he had, so it makes sense that he was protective of you.
For all that the loss of the love of his life might have hurt him, and for all that you might wish you knew more about your mother, the two of you were close. There wasn’t a day growing up that you doubted he was proud of you, not a moment you worried he didn’t love you. But he worked so hard to make a life for you, so you had to work just as much to feel as if you earned that.
You never stepped a toe out of line-good grades, in honors classes, a part time job, a decent enough soccer player, an active member of your church choir. Sure, you might have been a cliche-the good girl who never did anything wrong, but you couldn’t risk it. Your father sacrificed a lot for you, had lost everything, so it was only fair that you do your part.
You had just finished submitting all your college applications when your father got to the news. Cancer, a late enough stage to be worried about if he’d make it. His treatments started and you did what you could to pick up the slack. Extra shifts at Ugly Mug, quitting track so you could help drive him to the doctors and take care of him when he was too weak to do much more than sleep, ignore your pride so you could accept kindness from the church congregation when they tried to help.
By the time you received your acceptance letters-one to your dream school, an east coast institution with one of the best chemistry programs in the country-you had given up on dreams outside of Blackrock. Even with the scholarship, you knew that you couldn’t afford it. Your father’s medical bills were stacked high on the kitchen counter, the red of the overdue marks bright in the dimness. You knew your college fund had better uses.
So you stayed in Blackrock, got a job at the high school you once attended. You sang in the choir, slept in your childhood room for a few more years, and kept trying your best to be okay with how the cards were dealt for you.
You were happy, or close enough to it that it didn’t matter. Things in Blackrock were quiet, boring, and the way they always were, and you were fine with that.
Until you found out about the wolves.
It was an accident-the wrong place, the wrong time, and you suppose you should consider yourself lucky that you didn’t get hurt when you saw this transformation. It’s not your secret to share, but you suddenly feel small, scared. You don’t know what this means, not for you or this town.
You want to call Milo-he’d get it, the conflicting feelings swirling through your head. You’ve listened to enough of his podcast and heard enough of his rambles when you were still speaking that you were fairly certain he’d believe you without any proof, but you can’t. Not just because the two of you were over, because you broke both of your hearts, but because it wasn’t your secret to share.
You didn’t know what to do with this knowledge, how to reconcile the secrets the town you swore you knew held and what it means for the death that’s lingering. You wonder if you knew the wolf that died, if the people going missing were wolves or people who crossed paths with one.
You wonder what other secrets Blackrock is hiding.
CONNECTIONS
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I think that [ OPEN ] proves that for me ( Sadie’s lived here all her live, and her father was always a single parent. This is someone who was a former baby sitter or neighbor or other adult who she’s known for years and tends to go to when she needs help )
I thought I knew everything about this town, but after seeing HICKORY transform showed me how wrong I was. Now I can’t help but think, what is [ OPEN ] hiding? ( Could be a wolf, or a hunter, or just someone in town with a secret they don’t want getting out. Sadie noticed something was off, and she’s starting to pay too much attention in order to figure it out )
Milo and I broke each other’s hearts, and I’m scared to do that again. [ OPEN ] makes me want to take that risk ( give Sadie a significant other of any gender 2k20.!!!! )
I helped out [ OPEN ] once when they were in a tight spot, and some times I can’t help but regret it ( Sadie did this character a favor of some sorts and now it’s attracting attention or trouble she doesn’t want in her life )
The wolves don’t scare me, but [ OPEN ] might do to any they find does. ( This is specifically for a hunter! Sadie might be new to this, but the second she finds out about hunters, she’s going to be so distressed at the idea of her classmates or friends or neighbors dying for something as harmless as being a werewolf )
theo was freezing. winter had completely overtaken blackrock and settled into the woods. her breath curled into the air like smoke as she walked back to the shop. lunch breaks had been infinitely shorter since grey had taken a leave. there was too much to get done. ‘oof.’ while she was in a world of her own, theo almost managed to bump into someone else on the street. instead, sadie swiftly avoided her and theo stumbled a few steps instead. “oh, woah. yeah, I’m fine.” she nodded. “sorry sadie, I wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t step on you or anything, right?”
Sadie offered a friendly smile up at Theo, “Nah, you’re fine,” she said as she shook her head. The both of them seemed to be a bit distracted, and Sadie almost welcomed the distraction that came with the near collision. A brief pause in the way her mind was swirling around about this town and the wolves and all the other secrets. “You doing okay?” she asked, leaning back on her heels and adjusting her stance to one that was more comfortable. “Last few times I’ve been to the book store you were off.” If Sadie had been looking for books on local legends and werewolves, well, that was her business.
The pit in Nora’s stomach was back - a deep, dark void threatening consume her from the inside out. It had manifested last night when she couldn’t sleep, and no matter how much vodka she’d tried choking down, it refused to fill. If anything, she’d only made it worse by listening to her saved voicemails - falling asleep sometime around 5 with the sound of Addison’s excitement about her new friends still ringing in her ears. Almost running into the woman on main street was her fault, a shitty mix of sleep-deprivation and her hangover leaving her mindless like a zombie. As she stepped back - trying to avoid bowling her over - Nora stumbled over her own feet, landing hard but luckily on the bus stop bench. "Yeah.“ Her cheeks colored, briefly matching her hair before she forced herself to take a breath. With the chilly breeze chasing away the heat in her cheeks, she shook her head at the girl.
"Actually, I think that might have been my fault. Got lost daydreaming.” She racked her brain, trying to remember if she’d met her before. The locals were all starting to blend together - a collage of lies, secrecy, and frustration. “Sorry about that.”
Sadie reached a hand down to help the woman from where she had fallen, a kind smile on her face the whole time. The stranger-and it was someone Sadie didn’t know, another reminder that she didn’t know Blackrock as much as she thought she had before finding out about the wolves-wasn’t someone Sadie had seen before, and she couldn’t help but wonder is she was somehow linked to the town’s secrets. “I think we were both a little too preoccupied,” she offered with a friendly smile. Whatever new worries and fears she might have about her little town and the world at large, Sadie couldn’t help but try to be friendly to someone who was clearly not from here. “I don’t think we’ve met-I’m Sadie,” she said, once again sticking out her hand, this time to shake. “Are you new to town?”
The chill of winter had started to fade from town, and it might be the first year she knew what that meant, but she couldn’t help but feel as if she should have expected the knock that came as she was getting ready for bed. A glance out the peephole showed a familiar, though recently absent, figure outside her door. “You okay?” she asked Maite in lieu of a greeting as she swung open the door and gestured the woman into her tiny apartment. “Kind of got used to you not showing up for me to play doctor,” she teased gently as she herded Maite into the bathroom. Sadie had learned after the first of these visits that it was easier to clean tiles than carpet. “Was almost lonely, with you off doing wolf things all winter.”

There wasn’t a single thing Milo would rather be doing than driving around with Sadie as the sun was setting. Giving her hand a gentle squeeze as he followed her directions, Milo’s nose scrunched up as he tried to read the road signs ahead. “I’m gonna be honest, I haven’t been out this far in a long time,” he said with a shrug. “You taking us to look at the stars again?” he asked, his tone light. He did like taking her out on nice dinner dates or out to the movies, but she was slowly showing him that he didn’t have to spend a shitton of money to have fun with her. “Do I get a hint?” he asked with a bit of a pout.
She smiled as Milo squeezed her hand, the gesture a familiar and comfortable form of affection between the two, taking a moment to observe him as they drove. His expression was cute, endearing, as he concentrated on reading a passing sign to try and figure out where she was having him drive, and she was filled with an overwhelming fondness for her boyfriend. She laughed, the sound easy and relaxed as it filled the car. “Not the stars, no,” she shook her head as she spoke. “Here’s this for a hint: it’s more aligned with your interesting than mine.” Sadie paused for a moment, adding carefully, “There might be some minor law breaking involved.”
Sadie never used to feel so out of sorts in her hometown. She knew these streets better than anyone, could name just about everyone who had ever lived inside the town’s boundaries during her lifetime, but ever since she saw Hickory transform, she couldn’t help but be on edge just walking through the town, especially as the weather turned colder. So lost in her thoughts of trying to reconcile the Blackrock she grew up in with the one where children went missing and acquaintances turned into wolves, she didn’t notice the figure until she almost bumped into them. “Oh, I’m sorry!” she exclaimed, taking a hasty step out of the way to narrowly avoiding running into them. “Are you okay?”
Money might always be tight for Sadie-her father’s medical bills still lingering in payment plans and loans that weight heavily on their family of two-but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t find something that would work for a nice date. The supposed haunted house an hour outside of town and a bit of light breaking and entering was the best she could come up with, and she could feel an excited fluttering of her heart as she directed Milo to turn left. He and Sadie were opposites in so many ways, but she was thankful every day that she had him. “Any guesses about what we’re up to?” she asked, her smile teasing. “We’re almost there.”
