considering a few of the different takes on no mud no lotus i have come across today. based on the quote alone (i have not yet read the book by thich nhat hanh), i have always interpreted it to mean that without the mud (probably uncomfortable but here it is) there is no lotus (the peaceful rebirth, the rewarding result). i do not think that suffering is necessary. actually a lot of the time i believe "quitting" can be super insightful and is a very valid form of redirection toward the same goals (sacred bailing!). i feel more so that hard things will come and it is not possible to avoid all of it, so why not turn that energy into something powerful and useful. the self cleaning lotus flower sinks below the surface each night and acceptingly sleeps beside the mud; in the morning, the water-repellent petals clear away any dirt left on the flower as it blooms again. the mud gives the lotus a chance to be reborn each day in the same way our own hardships give us a fresh perspective (gratitude, self-awareness, redirection) on a situation!
