Joy Division’s posthumous album Closer, turned 45 a handful of weeks ago. Released on the 18th of July in 1980, it released exactly a month after the tragic death of their lead singer, Ian Curtis. This original 1980 UK release pulled from our collection features “Old Blue?” engraved on one side, referring to Frank “Old Blue Eyes” Sinatra. It’s album cover featuring a photograph of the tomb of the Appiani family located in Genova, the album-art caused some controversy surrounding the accusations of Factory Records cashing-in on Ian’s death. This was later debunked by Peter Saville loosely stating “the album art was confirmed by the label and band members a month before Ian’s tragic death”.
