History of Rangiri Dambulu Viharaya

The history of Dambulla dates back over 2,000 years. It is believed that King Valagamba of Anuradhapura sought refuge in these caves during his exile. After regaining his throne, he transformed the caves into a stunning Buddhist temple as an act of gratitude. Since then, the site has been a sacred pilgrimage destination for Buddhists.

Architectural and Artistic Marvel

The temple complex consists of five main caves, each filled with ancient Buddha statues, murals, and paintings that depict the life of the Buddha and significant events in Buddhist history. There are more than 150 Buddha images within the caves, along with statues of kings and deities. The intricate wall and ceiling paintings cover an area of over 2,000 square meters, showcasing Sri Lanka’s ancient art and devotion.

The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Ella, Sri Lanka. Surrounded by lush green tea plantations and misty hills, this bridge is a masterpiece of colonial-era engineering that continues to amaze travelers from around the world.

The bridge stretches 91 meters in length, stands 24 meters high, and features nine graceful arches that support the railway line. It’s an incredible sight when the blue train passes over the bridge, contrasting beautifully against the emerald-green landscape below.
