The budget suggestions by the mega-corporation have little bearing in reality. Two mega corporations--McDonalds and Visa--have partnered up to tell workers at the fast-food restaurant how to successfully budget on the meager wages they are paid. The suggestions, though, have little bearing in reality, as Think Progress’ Annie-Rose Strasser notes.“You can have almost anything you want as long as you plan ahead and save for it,” McDonalds soothingly assures their employees.
So according to McDonald’s and Visa we supposed to work two minimum wage jobs to live. The funny thing is many of us work two or more jobs and still can’t make ends meet.
This is budget is just not realistic.
I have no savings. My rent is $968 a month. My car payment is $355 a month. My car insurance is $180 a month. My gas is $25 a month. My phone is $80 a month. My electric is $50-$100 a month. My internet is $70 a month. Plus I have debt, emergencies, and I also like to eat sometimes because I’m a human being but McDonald’s and Visa didn’t think of that!
It’s actually really classist and sick that people look away while poor and low income people suffer. I’m not ashamed to be poor. It’s not my fault, it’s the fault of a system meant to oppress and keep people down. It says something about you as a person if you ignore a poor person’s cry for help.
This is why there are so many homeless people in America. And these billion dollar corporate companies are trying to justify them not wanting to pay people what they deserve to be safe and happy. Bullshit. Minimum wage should be $20 an hour all across America!
The singular, unavoidable truth about adoption is that it requires the undoing of one family so that another one can come into being.
The singular, unavoidable truth about adoption is that it requires the undoing of one family so that another one can come into being… By ignoring the complex reality of adoption, we are also corroborating a sentimental narrative that drives a billion-dollar, for-profit adoption industry whose sole purpose has been successfully shifted in modern history from finding homes for children who legitimately need them, to supplying hopeful prospective parents with kids to call their own[…]
Inside the fairy tale, we don’t have to think about the darkness, the underbelly, or the unspeakable grief lying just below the surface of a child who has been severed from their home and family of origin. We don’t have to think about the countless pregnant people in the United States and across the globe who have been tricked, bribed, forced, and coerced into relinquishing their children or whose children are kidnapped and sold to agencies or intermediaries who stand to profit from their adoptions. Inside the fairy tale, we don’t have to think about all the first mothers and first families who would choose to keep their children or whose children might not have been unnecessarily or unjustly taken from them if they had access to the right kinds of support. The kinds of support that could be provided countless times over, both in the US and abroad, with the money currently invested in keeping the for-profit adoption industry and the child welfare industry in business.
So why do we love the adoption fairy tale so much? Most of us agree that modern day fairy tales have set us up for failure when it comes to beauty standards and romantic relationship expectations, but what about family-making?

Your daughters do not exist to give you grandchildren
Earlier I called up the offices of several state senators
I spoke to several staffers and asked if their bosses planned to join the growing list of senators voicing their opposition to Steve Bannon being on White House staff
Do you know what one of them asked me?
“Are you keeping a list of senators who don’t speak out?”
We can put pressure on these officials.
Organize an event, get some friends together, order a pizza for lunch and start making calls.
Call their state offices. And then call their DC offices.
Don’t send an email. Don’t write a letter. Call.
And if they say nothing, put them on a list. We will remember who they are and what they didn’t do.
Do this, CALL, and remember that Republican senators can absolutely be worked on, too. There’s already blowback against Bannon from some more old school conservatives.
This is my own short script, in case anyone wants it:
Hi, I’m phoning to urge Senator [NAME] to speak out against Steve Bannon’s unacceptable appointment as President-elect Trump’s top advisor. Bannon is an open and proud promoter of bigotry, including explicit neo-Nazi ideology, and clearly does not belong in any President’s administration. Where and when, if it’s not yet released, can constituents see Senator [NAME]’s statement condemning Bannon and this appointment?
(If you get resistance, ask where/when constituents can see the Senator’s statement regarding why it is acceptable for a President’s top advisor to be a proud promoter of bigotry, including explicit neo-Nazi ideology, because this isn’t an issue that can be ignored.)

For everyone planning to kill themselves in the event of a Trump victory:
Don’t.
We need you. The world needs you. We’ve been through this before, in one way or another, and we have prevailed. Who benefits from your death? Only those who want you silenced.
There will be blue skies ahead. There will be triumphs. This is not the end of the world.
Do not go gentle - we are here today because of the stubborn refusal of our predecessors to go away. There are oases even in the darkest of times. You are not alone, and you have not been abandoned. There *will* be blue skies ahead, and you will live to see them.

Gentrification in action has become in many ways a distraction from the things that make gentrification possible. We ask why white twenty- and thirty-somethings with service industry and entry-to-low-mid-level jobs come into these neighborhoods, when we should be asking why people of color aren’t able to afford to stay, why people of color aren’t paid enough in these same level of jobs to afford to stay, why the cops weren’t even trying to actually do their jobs until white faces showed up, why management companies didn’t actually maintain their buildings until white faces showed up, why grocery stores didn’t maintain strict standards or any standards on their inventory until white faces showed up, and so on and so on.
We know why the first waves of white people show up: it’s what they can afford. And then they want the same thing the people who always lived there want: quality shops and services, entertainment, and so on. The question is why broke white people are still at an advantage to the people of color who already lived there.

Iman for KENZO, 1983.
I also see people prioritizing romantic relationships over all else—ditching their friends, putting all their emotional eggs in one basket, and creating unhealthy dynamics with the people they date because of it. It becomes simultaneously the most important relationship, and the one where people act out their most insecure selves. One of my goals in thinking about redefining the way we view relationships is to try to treat the people I date more like I treat my friends—try to be respectful and thoughtful and have boundaries and reasonable expectations—and to try to treat my friends more like my dates—to give them special attention, honor my commitments to them, be consistent, and invest deeply in our futures together.
