The only place Jim didnât hate being Admiral Kirk was at the Academy. With Spock commanding the Enterprise, and him stuck at a desk job, it took being surrounded by the semi-organized chaos of a sea of cadets to make him feel alive. He regretted letting Enterprise go, but he had to give Spock his time in the chairâeven if their girl was being used for cadet training and not exploring strange new worlds.
Christ he missed exploring strange new worlds.
Unlike just about everyone else in the building, cadets, instructors, and officers included, Jim had a real book tucked under his arm as he made his way along, and the book went sailing when a tall, slender girl crashed into him. He caught a flash of pointed ears, long brown hair, and then there was a look of shock on her face for a moment.
Still able to get an emotion out of a Vulcan. Way to go, Jim!
âIt happens,â he said, glancing at her rank insignia. Lieutenant JG. That meant she was smart, which was no surprise being a Vulcan, and being a Vulcan, he suspected she might be Spockâs new projectâSaavik. âNo apology necessary. Did you see where my book went?â
She let out a small relieved breath and then looked around for the book. Â At least he wasnât angry with her, not that she really expected him to be but sometimes humans took offense when there really wasnât any. Â âI see it, sir.â Â Moving past him, she bent down and picked the book up from the shadowed corner it had landed in. Â âA book? Â I did not know that anyone read books yet.â Â Glancing at the title, she handed it over. Â âI do not believe I am familiar with this story, The Count of Monte Cristo.â
âI am sorry sir, I should have been more aware of my surroundings. Â I will be more vigilant in the future.â Â It had been an accident and she knew that she shouldnât have to apologize, especially after he had told her it wasnât necessary but Admiral Kirk was not a normal human. Â She had nearly grown up hearing about his exploits and those of the Enterprise and besides Spock, he was the other reason she was here.
Her mental clock was ticking down for her class and she was going to be late if she didnât leave in a few moments but she couldnât leave until he allowed her. Â âAre you instructing a class this semester, sir? Â I would be interested in attending it.â Â Even if it werenât something pertaining to her field, she would love to go to one of his classes, just see what the man was really like.
