Dustin could not believe his eyes as Stacey Albright stood infront of him.
âHey so-â the redhead girl said turning halfway around to face the boys infront of her.
âIm having a party later tonightâ she said as she fidgeted with her diploma, you guys should come.â
The girl smiled then walked away as Dustin stood shellshocked, the sound of Willâs chuckles breaking his trance like state.
âWhat just happenedâ the boy said looking around trying to get a grasp on reality
âShould we go?â Will said hesitantly wearing a small smile on his face
âIs that rhetorical?â Lucas joked, thinking of all the moments he thought about having his closest friends at an after party and lighting up at the idea of it becoming a reality.
âWait no screw thatâ Mike interrupted, âI have a better ideaâ He said, eyes bright with plans of the perfect afternoon in mind.
The party in Mikes basement just like old times crowded around the table that seemed to shrink as they got older, and the perfect end to the campaign that would end it all.
âAre you serious Michael?â Dustin scoffed âIâve had a thing for Stacey since the EIGHT GRADE you are not taking this away from me Mikeâ he said throwing his hands up in the air.
âI donât know Mike, are we seriously gonna be the outcast who stay in playing dnd after Dustin here worked so hard to break down the walls dividing us?â Lucas said placing an arm around Dustinâs shoulder giving him a friendly school.
Mike scoffed looking at the two boys, then turning to look at Will.
âCâmon Will the Wise what do you say?â Mike said with a hopeful grin.
â I dunnoâŠI mean it could be pretty coolâ Will replied looking over his ecstatic friends.
âHey!â Max yelled out as she parted the crowd of teens surrounding her finally reaching the party.
Lucas took a step closer to her, âHey gorgeousâ he responded placing a hand on her waist pulling her in closer.
âGrossâ max chuckled light-heartedly as she relaxed her head onto Lucasâs shoulder.
Coming from the same direction was Chance, the once bully of the party, and teammate of Lucas who had become tolerable over the past year and a half.
âHey man that was sick!â Chance explained bringing Dustin in for a handshake.
Dustin wore a shocked expression on his face, over the past 6 years he had experienced so much stranger, but his middle school crush and high school bully embracing him minutes apart was almost as shocking as seeing a Demogorgon for the first time.
âuh- thanksâ Dustin laughed nervously as Chance pulled him in and gave him a stern pat on the back.
âSo I guess Iâll see you guys tonight?â Chance asked, a genuine smile on his face.
Max looked up at Lucas with a glance that said âwhat did I miss?â, Lucas met her eyes with an expression that said âIâll explain later this is unrealâ
âYeah for sureâ Lucas replied, holding Max a little tighter.
âWho wouldâve thought weâd see Zombie Boy graduateâ Chance teased light-heartedly looking at Will who was fidgeting with his hands.
âHey whatâs your deal?â Mike scoffed, seeing the same kid who stood and watched Dustin get slammed against a locker.
Chance rolled his eyes at Mikes words and looked back at Will with a smile, âSee you Byersâ he said as he walked off.
Max watched as Chance walked off and then turned to look back at Will.
âOkay what just happened?â She said baffled letting go of Lucas to cross her arms. âWill Byers do you have a crush?â Max squealed âHey hey could you be any louder- ow!â Lucas murmured before being met with a soft kick to his ankle.
âI donât knowâ Will replied wearing a nervous smile, âI donât even think heâs- but he is kinda-â
âWhat dreamy?â Mike mocked cutting Will off âcmon you donât seriously like that douchebag do you?â Mike cried out, from the amount of distress on his face you wouldâve thought Vecna had Will under-spell again.
âHe does have good hair Iâll give him that-â Dustin murmured avoiding the death stare coming from Mikes eyes.
âOk ok enough about Chance and his great hair!â Will laughed. âHow about we recoup tomorrow 11am Mikes houseâ Will suggested as the group nodded.
âBut tonight we celebrate Dustinâs reign!â Lucas announced ruffling the boyâs curls.
In the distance the familiar voice of the Wheeler family calling out for Mike was heard, after one last embrace Mike followed the sound to be met Nancy and Karen.
âSo what do you say 6pm my house and then we can head to Staceyâs?â Lucas asked
âI still have no idea whatâs going onâ Max announced looking around at the boys.
âOh you know I only got us invited to the biggest graduation party of the year and Mike wanted to skip out on it for DnD.â Dustin replied a bit of snark in his voice.
âWell of course have you met Mike?â Max replied âAnd weâre so talking about Chance laterâ she said nodding at Will who still had Chanceâs words echoing through his mind.
After the earthquake destroyed the trailer Max had called home and after her âmissingâ mom was declared deceased Mrs. Sinclair graciously took in Max allowing her to live with them while she finished high school. Of course this was under an absolutely no funny business rule and should Lucas get Max pregnant they would disown Lucas keeping only Max and the baby.
Max and Will sat upstairs in Maxâs room, which was previously Mrs, Sinclairs scrapbooking room but had quickly transformed into something Max could call her own. There were movie posters on the wall, a dresser and vanity mirror decorated with old pictures, and a record player Max had gotten for Christmas along with Hounds of Love by Kate Bush on Vinyl.
Max had never really cared about her looks, even when she first got with Lucas it all felt a little vain, however finally being somewhere comfortable enough to call home and having a strong woman in her life to guide her she was truly starting to blossom.
âDo you really think Chance might actually like me?â Will asked nervously as he held a pillow on Maxâs bed, âI mean does he even seem like the type that would like boys?â
Max was sitting on a stool infront of her vanity, emulsifying some gel she had in her hands and incorporating it into her curls. âRemind me again how many dimensions have you been to?â Max asked sarcastically, âI mean Hawkins didnât seem like the town to have an inter-dimensional hellscape underneath it yet it did, Will youâve lived through so much more unlikely so yeah Chance liking boys seems pretty possibleâ
âI donât knowâŠI feel kinda bad ditching Mikeâ Will said the sound of footsteps up the stairs echoing down the hallway.
âIf anything Mike should feel bad missing out on the epic farewell of the class of 89â Lucas announced entering the room, his eyes immediately drawn to Max who looked as perfect as ever.
âWe tried calling Karen said he just wasnât feeling up to itâ Dustin said as he sat down next to Will.
In the Wheeler house Mike sat lonesome in his basement, for a long time it felt the parties lives revolved around this setting. From the night Will disappeared to them first finding El, to the many nights spent there in silence after her death.
For a moment all he could think about was Will, all the bravery and heroism he had to display since the age of 12, and how excited he had been for the party, the boy who once wanted nothing more than to play DnD with his friends. It suddenly hit Mike how selfish he had been. After being isolated all of high school would it kill them to have a little fun?
Mike ran upstairs to the kitchen;the nearest phone to the basement, and dialed the Sinclair household.
âCmon pickup pickup pickupâ Mike thought to himself until he finally heard the ringing stop l.
âSinclair House, Sue speakingâ
âHello Mrs. Sinclair is Lucas still home?â Mike asked tapping his foot restlessly
âSorry honey the kids left a half hour agoâ She replied in a sympathetic tone.
Mike thanked her and hung up the phone.
Mike looked outside, the cloudy afternoon turned into a dusky storm, yet down the streets the Albright house lit up the neighborhood.
3 houses down from the Wheelers down a winded road stood the McMansion that belonged to the Albright Family.
Inside just past the foyer stood Dustin, red solo cup in hand 15 minutes deep into DnD lore with a group of kids surrounding him. Down the hall in another room stood Lucas in a very intense game of beer pong with a giddy Max clung onto the side of him.
Outside on the back patio stood Will, taking in the storms that was just past the shut-in patio.
The door behind him crept open and he turned to see who was behind it.
âHeyâ It was Chance, he wore a white collared shirt paired with his letterman jacket that had âclass of 89 on the sleeve and as always his hair was perfectly tousled.
âYou cameâ He said with a smile as he went and stood next to the boy.
âYeah- yeah I cameâ Will replied with a nervous smile as he fidgeted with his necklace.
âWell you shouldnât be out here all alone let me grab you a drinkâ Chance insisted going out into the kitchen on the other side of the door.
Coming through the door was a slightly tipsy Max who looked back at Chance then at Will.
âHey there you are!â Max announced running to embrace Will âAre you seriously hiding out back here with Chance see I told you!â She exclaimed a bit too loudly, Will hadnât seen Max this excited since Kate Bushâs last album dropped.
âWeâre just talking and heâs gonna be back any second so i think you need to grab a glass of water-â Will muttered as he watched Chance make his way out back.
âYes sir!â Max slurred as she saluted Will then walked back into the house meeting Chance in the doorway.
âHey Max are you-â âOh no you guys have fun Iâm gonna go find my boyfriend and a drink a drink for my boyfriend have fun you two-â she slurred before scurrying away
Chance looked back in confusion before coming over and handing Will a cup full of beer that from a keg that was mostly foam but still appreciated.
âThank youâ Will smiled, more genuine and relaxed as he took a sip from the cup.
âYouâre welcomeâ Chance replied fiddling with the cup in his own hand trying to figure out what exactly to say.
âSo um- are you really going pro?â Will asked trying to make conversation.
âOh no that was just a stupid superlativeâ Chance laughed âI mean my dad probably wanted me too but itâs not like thereâs a ton of recruiters coming around here, Iâm going to Indiana University. Itâs still D1 but really I wanna study art historyâ
Will could not believe what he was hearing, maybe he and Chance had more in common than he thought..
âWow thats-thatâs thatâs really cool Chanceâ Will replied with a giddy smile as the alcohol began to hit his bloodstream.
âYeah I havenât told my parents yet they think Iâm undecided but leaning towards business or something? Thank you though I appreciate itâ There was something about Chance that was different when they were together like this, his demeanor was different- softer. The way he looked at Will like he was in awe of him.
âWhat about you?â Chance asked
âIâm going to NYUâ Will said with a smile, âYeah my brother goes there and he really thinks Iâm gonna love it. Iâm not sure what Iâm gonna study but Iâm leaning towards visual artsâ
âWow thatâs amazing, you know Iâve seen some of your stuff in the art room youâre really goodâ Chance admitted before taking a sip of his drink.
âReally?â Will asked a genuine wonder in his voice.
âReallyâ Chance reassured him.
In that moment Robins words echoed in Willâs mind, and for the first time in a long time, he wasnât thinking about the upside down, or Mike, or what was wrong with him inside, or saving the whole world, it was just about him.
âListen I know we had our differences in high school but I want you know I donât wanna be a dumb jock anymore. I would love to see you again before you go take on New Yorkâ
