reading will help you a lot as well to develop a style you might like more! it'll help you expand your vocabulary and sentence structures. on that topic, vary your sentence structures! short sentences between longer sentences serve as a refreshing pause for readers, cause consecutive strings of sentences that need three commas will feel like a drag to read. dont be afraid of them, theyre ur friend :]
also, your writing will mature with you. thats NOT to say that i think you are a 12 year old, but your writing will change with how you experience life. i dont mean to get deep because im just some roblox selfship blog, but when you experience and take in more of the world, and your beliefs and schema evolve, that spirit is carried in your writing if that makes sense.
more focused on writing, never let length = quality. while description is good, spending too much time on describing everything will feel like a drag to read through, reserve it for something thats actually significant or warrants that level of description. readers can often fill in gaps. this also applies to words, a rich vocabulary is encouraged but dont go injecting ridiculously big sounding words if they dont have a need. ive gotten comments on multiple occasions telling me that, despite my simple vocabulary, and short description, my writing style is nice! ive seen some people also bring in "synonyms for said" into this conversation, you dont need to replace every said with a word thats not said unless its really that important how the dialogue is spoken. i am still guilty of this im ngl HASUDSA
on that note, avoid purple prose i know we're on tumblr, the purple prose palace, but please for the love of god avoid it . if u dont know, purple prose is a style of writing commonly associated with tumblr writers that is overly extravagant and descriptive (ABUSING metaphors, adjectives, adverbs) in an attempt usually to sound more highly literate and its criticized for being disruptive, lacking true substance, and in general sounding Very pretentious and making the writer sound Obviously raised on tumblr
an example i can think off the top of the dome is this image if u ever find urself sounding like the left its okay, its a common misgiving that deep words and metaphors = good and complex but Revise it Immediately
additionally, many good writers focus on the emotional aspect if theyre writing characters. you can be a good describer of the setting or the actions, but what really helps connects the reader to the work is the feelings and mental state. its the cherry on top for your writing!! i still struggle with this and am working on it, so dont feel bad about struggling with it too ^^
and of course, show dont tell! if a character is feeling a certain way, describe the result of it or how they're feeling rather than stating they feel that way
finally, always look to improve. you will constantly come across people who are better, use that as motivation to propel yourself forward in the direction you want to go. the only bad writer is the writer that gives up learning because they dont think they'll get better, whether that's because they think they're too bad or because they think they're the best and can't improve any more
