Grand porphyry bathtub of Emperor Nero (54-68 AD), from his Domus Aurea palace in Rome. The tub is roughly 7.63 m (25 ft) in radius and weighs thousands of pounds. Perched on large stone legs, it looks like a colossal birdbath. The mosaic it stands on has scenes of Neptune.

The four reliefs of Bacchantes (E00042, E00043, E00045 y E00046) are Roman copies of Greek originals made in Athens in the late fifth-century B.C. to adorn a monument to Dionysius, or related with theatrical activity under his patronage. The reliefs show Dionysus’s followers who, on account of their unrestrained dance, were called Maenads. Wearing almost transparent dresses and their jewels, they might represent women who took part in rites under the appearance of mythical Maenads. Copied many times on marble plaques and vessels, the original reliefs are traditionally attributed to Callimachus (ca. 410-400 B.C.), whom Vitruvius credits with the invention of the Corinthian capital. This sculptor was famous for his works´ perfect finishes. (Museo del Prado)

The capitals, carved in crisp and striking detail, are a variant of the early Hellenistic Corinthian capital. The figure of a double-bodied Sphinx dominates front and back, and large palmettes ornament the sides. They are typical of the architectural decoration found on Tarantine naiskoi (funerary monuments). (MET)

Do Birds Use Scarecrows? - On the Evolution of Snake Skin as Nest Material
The materials birds use in nest construction can have a strong effect on conditions experienced by eggs, nestlings, and incubating parents. For example, species breeding in cold environments often use insulative materials in their nests. But, the function of many nesting materials remains poorly known. Here, we explore one material frequently reported in bird nests: shed snake skin. Snake skins are relatively rare among materials available for nesting birds, so species that use this material invest time and energy locating and gathering it, suggesting that it increases reproductive success. So, why do birds incorporate snake sheds into their nest? Our study tackled this question using three independent approaches. First, we looked for patterns across species reported to use snake skin in nest construction. So far, 78 species are reported to use shed snake skin in their nests and these species disproportionately nest in secondary cavities compared to open-cup nesting species...
