Aside from stealing food, the slugcat discovered painting. Theyâd seen scavengers do it, theyâd seen art, theyâd seen so many murals of old. There long before their time. Ancient even. They discovered paint, and instead of paint on paper, there were three-digit hand prints all over the table, different colors like pink and teal, grabbing tubes and sniffing the paint only to make a face. Their white, slimy pelt was just speckled in random colors, it was a messy scene. Like a 2 year old at an arts n crafts faire.
To be frank, the Survivor was enjoying themselves. Surprisingly, their given canvas remained unmarked of paint,
The Traveler had been distracted watching this little slug creature go absolutely ham on the table. Combined with the excitement of seeing something so small--tiny friend little companion!!--was a feeling of awe. There was an incredible array of colors theyâd never dreamed of seeing before, splattered everywhere. They crept forward, warbling curiously--this friend companion was very talented, creating something so intricate!Â
They recalled their Ancestorsâ own murals, ancient light imprinted onto sand-smoothed stone. They remembered them being glowing and bright, and exceptionally pretty, but nothing so loose and colorful. The colors made them so excited. They began to bob their head a bit, looking at their talented friend companion. Could they paint, too? âTraveler Help?â they chirruped, stepping closer. âTraveler Like Talented Little Friend Companion. Friend Companion Teach?â

Itty bitty fun starter for @mustachedheroine !!Â
Shuffle shuffle shuffle. The Traveler gauges deep lines into the dirt, peering over at their new friend with two very bright (and little!!) scarves on their face, checking them as a reference. They wanted to make their companion look perfect! Theyâd practiced all their life drawing in the sand, and they were gonna make it look good!
Hup! There goes an eye! They chirrup excitedly. They hope sheâll like it! They shuffle and jump and fly around, carving into the dirt, doing their best to draw. And finally...finally...
Perfection! It looks just like their friend! They flare their cloak--huzzah!--and gesture for their friend companion to come take a look.
The Traveler is in a drawing mood. Like for a really short thread where the Traveler draws your muse!
Let's try that again.
They haven't been here long, and they've only seen just a fraction of this strange new place. But they've come to call it home, as weird as it is. They've found many companions, and as they gaze out onto the collection of people facing this grand new enemy they find themselves buzzing with excitement despite the circumstances--there are even more to befriend. To understand.
They look at the creatures that face them in opposition and, among the fear, there is an absolute resolution: Protect Protect Protect!
They don't know much about fighting, but they'll do it alongside anyone to protect the future they all deserve.
(Like for an uncapped starter!!)
They're ready.

Wind whispered through the tightly woven leaves of Cotesâ dense jungle. Kumatora felt needlessly lost. She could hear all sorts of things around her, but she still felt isolated as could be. She wouldnât be as on edge about where she was if it werenât for the fact that she literally had none of the few personal belongings she had, and with her current Phsique, she could tell that the place she was anywhere but home. âLucas? Boney?? Duster??? You guys out there?â She called out, and not so much to her surprise as much as it was her disappointment, she was met by anything but the sounds of her friends voices. However, what did catch her attention, was the sound of something moving behind her, and she spun around to face it.
âWhoâs there?âÂ
The Traveler was still figuring things out as they trotted through the forest, arms hanging loosely at their sides. It felt weird having appendages that werenât just pointy legs. Their sense of balance was offâthat wasnât good for someone who walked a lot!
So when that voice called out so suddenly, the Traveler chirruped in surprise. Nearly tripping over themselves, they flared their cloak out along with the sleeves of their arms, the tassles along the edges of the fabric glowing slightly. They hobbled precariously on their feet, regaining their balance. And while they did thatânew friend! New companion!
Very very colorful companion. Very fluffy, also. Their colorful friend companion had two ears sticking up, just like their own little tufts! âHello Rainbow Friend Companion! I Am Called Traveler. Traveler Did Not Mean To Startle. No Hurt No Fear.â Their eyes glowed with delight. âTraveler Likes Rainbow Companionâs Cloak!â
Kumatora jumped a bit at the way they were approached, but was very humored at the least by The Travelerâs enthusiasm. âOh! Hi! Itâs nice to meetcha! Iâm Kumatora. I like your cloak, too!â The smile on her face faded quick as she looked up and around, however. The sky had a dusty red color to it, and while she couldnât see anything really happening outside of the thick canopy of leaves, the energy that hung on the air was more than enough to make her feel tense. âDo you know whatâs happening here?â They said, gesturing skyward. â Iâm willing to take a guess that thisâŚIsnât the norm.â Â
They perked up. The Traveler was glad that she liked their cloak, too! They began to bounce on their feet with growing excitement, but they slowly stilled as she asked her next question. They tilted their head back, gazing up at the sky themself. The color should have reminded them of the calming sunsets they were accustomed to, but it instead left a sense of dread.
"Traveler Not Sure," they warbled softly. "Traveler Does Not Come From Here. But It Has Changed Since The Sky Screamed, And The Sun Vanished." They began to walk methodically around in the forest clearing, digging the tip of their foot into the dirt to draw the hole that had once been in the center of the giant city. Then they drew in a tree. "Lightning Struck, And The World Changed. Traveler Changed Too." They looked down at their hands, wiggling them weirdly. "I Do Not Have Arms. But I Do Now. Traveler Confused. But..." They looked up again. "Something Scary Up There. Big Monster--Guardian?--Creature. Have To Stop It. Traveler Knows That."

The Traveler trills happily in response, drawing back slowly. Their cloak still glows due to being close to their tall friend companion, but they donât move away, still looking up at them. They nod their head back, eyes glowing happily.
âTraveler Happy. Iâm Happy You Are No Hurt No Pain.â They glance at their weapon, eyeing the pointy tip. âIf You Fight, Friend Companion, Donât Get Hurt. Friend Companion Should Run. No Hurt Better Than Battle. Traveler Will Help. I Will Help!â They perk up proudly, poofing out their cloak.
Hollow tilts their head hearing this. They couldnât promise that they wouldnât get hurt in battle, it tends to come with when the action is committed. Thinking that they should keep the The Traveler towards the side so they at lest wouldnât get roped into the fight.
The vessel does still look confused on how the Traveler would help, a short whistle of confusion leaving them.
The Traveler tilts their head back, still stretched up tall. At their friend's confused noise, they warble back softly. "Traveler Will Protect! Traveler Will Help Tall Friend Companion. I Will Guide You Away From Danger!" They eye their cloak curiously. It looks a little tattered, but that doesn't mean it won't work. "I Teach You To Fly. Can Tall Friend Companion Flap Cloak?"
They fan out their own cloak, showing the embroideries along the edges. "If Tall Friend Companion Fly, No Hurt No Pain. You Win!"
the-wayfarer-songâ:
The Traveler looks up at the sky appreciatively. âSame Sky For Companions? TogetherâŚâ What heâd said sounded nice, and it made happiness flare within them; even if they werenât with their other companions, they were still all together under a blanket of clouds and stars. Maybe even the ones gone with the wind.
They drop their head.
Oh, heâs doing the tilting thing again! They shuffle a little bit closer, bobbing up and down with him. They liked dancing like this! Was it a game? Their cloak glowed a little as the wind caught their scarf, blowing it near their friend. As he stopped the movement, the Traveler began wiggling from side to side, trying to continue the little game-dance. Yes yes yes fun fun fun.
They started wiggling even more excitedly at his wordsâfriend companion friend companion!!!âand warbled loudly. âI Travel. I Seek! I am Traveler. The Other Companions Who Wander, Also Traveler. But Other Travelers Gone, So I Am Traveler. One Traveler.â Their eyes glow with excitement. âFriend Companion Called Dance Companion?â
Oh? There was a naming convention! Shadow wondered if it would be rude to use their naming conventionsâŚEh, it was worth a shot, âNo, no. Iâm hardly a dancer. Din did not bless me in that regard.â It earned a laughed from the one clad in black, âYou can call friend companion, Shadow companion! Or Shadow for short. Itâs easier.â
Shadow seemed to be in thought as he looked up who was in front of them. They were quite unique, now that he thought about it.  âWell, isnât it befitting a traveler like yourself would end up in new lands like these to explore? With all new people to meet too.â
The Traveler stopped wiggling respectfully. Sometimes a companion did not like to dance, or couldn't! They understood. Having little stick feet doesn't help with balance. "Shadow Companion Good! Traveler Happy To Meet Friend Shadow Companion." They pause, looking at the ground in thought, peering at their own shadow cast by the setting sun. "Shadow..." They poke at their shadow on the ground with their leg, looking up at him, then back down at the shadow.
They start hopping in a circle around Shadow, this time trying to dodge the fading shards of light weakly pouring down from the treetops. "Place New And Strange. Traveler Likes To Explore! I Find Friends Companions Buddies. There Are Many." They pause in their little game, looking at Shadow. "Traveler Likes Finding Companions. Shadow Like Companions? Shadow Find Many Friends? What Does Shadow Like?"
At the tall companionâs chirp, the Traveler gently brushes their glowing scarf against the crack in their skull-mask. A soft, low humming is audible, and a soothing heat eminates from the light.
(Unlike that other wicked light, this one will not fester and twist the minds of those in contact with it; this light offers kindness and warmth.)
âPain Hurt Heal?â they chirp softly, their little symbol glowing in the center of their chest. Even if they couldnât heal that deep wound, they hoped they could help any pain go away. They bounce on their feet a little, happy energy flowing through them.
They wait patiently for the other to heal, what ever that would mean. Hollow tries not to flinch as the scarf brushes against the cracks along their mask. Staying still for a few moments before a soft whistle leaves them as they start to feel the soothing heat.Â
The pain wasnât gone, they doubt it ever will, but for this moment they donât feel the ache and pains that their injuries bring. Hollow gives a whistle in response, a small nod. Even if it didnât, they might of tried to lie seeing how happy the other is.
The Traveler trills happily in response, drawing back slowly. Their cloak still glows due to being close to their tall friend companion, but they don't move away, still looking up at them. They nod their head back, eyes glowing happily.

the-wayfarer-songâ:
The Traveler realizes they bumped into someone new, and that makes them perk up excitedly. New friend! New buddy! They tended to bump into things when they werenât paying attention.
(Having a mask doesnât help with peripheral vision much, either.)
The stranger does a strange tilting motion, which the Traveler copies, though they arenât quite sure what it means. They like it, though, and repeat the bobbing motion again, just for fun.
âTraveler Likes Dark Sky,â they chirp brightly, standing up straight again and looking at their friend. âDark Sky Full Of Stars. Stars Glow Pretty. No Danger No Hurt!â They tilt their head. âFriend Companion Scared Of Dark Sky?â
âQuite the opposite actually. Itâs quite calming and brings me some solace in this purgatory.â He gestured to the sky, âItâs quite lovely to think no matter what, the sky bounds us all together, we all see the same sky.â Shadow grinned, noticing their bow was bouncy. Clearly, they were just mimicking him, it was humorous.
He bowed again, cocking an eyebrow to see how they would react to him now copying them.  âYou are quite peculiar in your vernacular. Itâs quite charming.â Shadow stopped bobbing, it was making him a bit lightheaded.
âDoes my friend companion go by Traveler?â Ah, the finest form of flattery!
The Traveler looks up at the sky appreciatively. "Same Sky For Companions? Together..." the-wayfarer-songâ:
The Traveler stared intently at Otus. He seemed scared, his tufts flattened and his hand protectively held against his chest. It made them feel nervous seeing their friend like this.
âNo Hurt,â they warbled, and again the chirp distorted loudly. It peetered off with an electrical-sounding whine, accented with a dull pop. The Traveler shook their head roughly, as though trying to stop it. It was like they couldnât control the pitch and volume of their chirps. Their voice sounded grating to their ears, and again they shook their entire body uncomfortably. Their eye hummed loudly with a contained power. It radiated a slight heat.
But Otus looked worried, and the Traveler ignored the weird feelings. Was their friend hurt? They unfolded their legs, shuffling closer to the owlboy. Did they hurt their friend?
âCompanion Hurt?â Whirr. Pop. Their scarf loosely floated towards him, nudging Otusâ gauntlet. âDid Traveler Hurt You?â They felt a sudden rush of fear, and their eye brightened. Their chirp was even louder this time. âWonât Dust Wonât Crumble? Hurt Hurt Hurt?â
Guh. Otus had a long way to go in understanding technology, if ever, but that dull pop sounded plain bad. At this point he finally processed the thought that the Traveler sounded and even looked like a machine, and that, judging by their constant shivers and shakes, they mightâve not even known that???
One side of his face twitched as the Traveler shuffled towards him. The owlboy felt awful at the fact that he wanted to put some distance between him and them, so a part of him was almost thankful that the log wasnât letting him go anywhere. Hesitating, he clasped his hand around Travelerâs scarf for comfort, and held it while trying to understand their messages.
He managed to shake his head - he wasnât sure which question of theirs that answered, but answering something was good enough for him. He forced himself forward, even if the light beaming from their face blinded his vision. Could he help? How would he help? Where was-
The mask!
The owl immediately tumbled to the side and searched the ground around the Traveler, brushing over the grass left and right before feeling it make contact with their mask. With one swift motion, he immediately pressed it against his friendâs face and held it there and hoped to whoeverâs out there that itâd help somehow.
The Traveler watches as Otus' face twitches a little, and the light of their eyes flicker in response. He wasn't going still, he wasn't staring off into the middle distance, he wasn't turning to dust--they relaxed minutely as he shook his head. Their friend wasn't going to leave. That was good.
Something still felt wrong.
As he scrambles away to look for something, they turn and watch intently. Is there something in the dirt? Maybe another firefly? Was something else scaring him, lurking out in the--
Smack.
"Wrbrrb?" The Traveler warbles in surprise as their mask is pressed firmly against their face, the electric sounds abruptly cutting off. That brightness fades to a soft glow, and the light returns to their eyes--white instead of harsh blue. And that...that feels a lot better!
They ruffle their cloak a bit, trying to adjust the mask into place better. Then they still a little, looking at Otus. Or rather his gauntlets. They're covering their eyes a bit, but it doesn't bother them, so they don't shake him off.
The Traveler wonders why he was so quick to cover their face up. Otus seemed to know it would help; that discomfort was gone, and the loud humming stopped buzzing in their head.
Maybe that was scary? Maybe the Traveler scared him? They felt shame run through them, and they hunched down, trying to make themselves smaller. "Traveler Scare Friend Companion?" Their chirp is soft and quiet. "Won't Scare Won't Hurt. I'm Sorry. Didn't Know. Traveler Sorry."
